any ideas if this is meant to be happening?
Whilst it looks like it is flowering, it also looks like it is killing the rest of the 'tree'. Although we have ridiculously shit soil in our garden as most things die (aside from the hardiest little shrubs). That said, this thing has generally done alright since we planted it.
There's one growing either side (is it two trees or one)? The right hand side/tree seems to have the bigger flower and also seems to be dying more than the other.

Mine went like that , the flower stinks ! After that the plant seem to die from the inside out.

Although ive just googled NZ Flax. Its not that.

Suzy - Im still not sure. Doesnt look mine is sprouting any new plants anywhere.
Think i will kill the flower before it kills the tree.
Most of the plants in my garden die anyway… can be having this check out on me as well.
