OFL ISO 2013/14

Post by skip »

Welcome to the ISO challenge for season 2013/14, now in it's 4th OFL season

After a very close contest last year we ended up with 2 managers in the top 25 overall and 2nd place in the Friends and Enemies standings (after the other FISO league).

Introduction to the game
Following previous chairmen, I have just copied the rules from last year. The rules of ISO are quite simple. Every participant starts with the same (agreed) squad line-up, and must make the same (agreed) selection choices over the first weekend of matches. From then onwards, everyone may manage their own team as they like, and by May we will see who has managed their transfers and subs best, and who has won ISO 2013/14!

Minileague
I have set up a F&E league for this competition:
League name: FISO ISO
Pin: 24680

Teams should be called "ISO <username>" (eg. ISO Skip), and it is one team per person. Teams should be in the league by the first weekend (although with OFL's facility to see a team's history, exceptions could be made within reason).

We'll aim to have the squad finalised about a week before the season starts, so that managers away in the run-up to Week 1 can still set up their team with the correct squad.

Participation
This game is open to any FISO member, whether you're an ex-TFFOer, an OFL regular, both or even neither! Obviously you can still win any of OFL's prizes, but there's no prize for the ISO competition itself, other than honour (and the right to choose next season's starting team). It's all the fun of any entry in OFL, minus the trouble of deciding your starting squad yourself, plus the extra banter and competition provided by the ISO challenge. Get involved!

It’s logistically difficult for me to put up a prize for the winner (living outside the UK) so unfortunately this is a break from tradition. The winning team in previous years has usually been in the OFL prize positions such is the level of competition.

Squad
By tradition, the starting squad is decided by the previous year's ISO winner and following a process of discussion and debate amongst entrants, criticised and changed until a final 16 is settled on. As the reigning champion I’ve put a 1st draft together for discussion.

GK J Hart MC 4.6

FB G Johnson LIV 4.4

FB S Coleman EVE 3.8

FB L Shaw SOT 3.2

CB J Vertonghen TOT 4.5

CB P Mertesacker ARS 4.4

M K Nolan WH 4.1

M R Koren HUL 3.7

M K Mirallas EVE 4.4

M H Ben Arfa NEW 4.0

M Michu SWA 5.0

M G Bale TOT 6.2

M E Hazard CHE 5.5

M K BO-KYUNG CAR 3.5

S D Sturridge LIV 6.7

S E Dzeko MC 7.0

Everyone needs to set the same supersubs for the 1st weekend of the season, so set everyone available to play EXCEPT for L Shaw away to West Brom, he stays on the bench.

Cheers Skip - I'm in.

Aside from a missing player the picks are good for me. Loving the strikers.. and think Navas has to be worth a punt despite poor stats from Seville last season (always looks pretty good for Spain!).

I've steered clear of Schurrle + Hazard initially in my other 2 teams, Schurrle would be a belter if he's a regular. Personally I prefer Walcott/Mata over Hazard in the same price range. Other midfielders all fairly solid - a risk on Ben Arfa but OK if he starts the season fit. Defence is a lottery and I like a 3.2 gamble to balance the books!

On Koren...I would go for Bellamy...same price, you know he'll play pretty much every game and is proven quality at the top level.

I'm in again. Team awaiting acceptance.
I'm not going to comment on line up for now as I haven't looked through the lists yet, other than to say Bale is better value compared to any listed as a striker.

Well done on winning last year Skip, and on first glance seems a solid enough squad for first draft

My only query would be having three fullbacks but only two centrebacks. Would it better the other way round?

To pick only one Man U player and that's De Gea, who could very easily be on minus points from the first 3 games? Don't see there's any value at all in paying 4.5m for a keeper that guarantees absolutely nothing. Better to go for a sub- 3.5m keeper and redistribute funds to drop one of the midfield donkeys for a 3rd CB?

Agree you could save a little dosh on De Gea...and I like the idea of a 3rd CB...to avoid those nasty fixtures

If he goes, then yes I agree a must-have. With the ISO format we can't bring him in as an Everton player unfortunately.

Im not so sure you are right on that Alex....it only says no more than two players from any one team...but surely that just means at the time of selection?

But we would all have to get him now, which excludes anyone who joins later.

With Negrado joining City, is it worth having a City forward? They will surely be constantly rotated.

Yes, since we all need an identical team then if Baines changes teams it will exclude anyone who joins after he switches, so it's best for us to wait until he's changed teams to add him (sadly).

Some very good feedback on the team - De Gea looking like not good value, a 3rd CB is better than a 3rd FB, and Aguero may not be worth it due to rotation if Negredo and Jovetic come in for City. I need to look into the Bellamy situation further, some fans feel he will only play 20 games this year, but if he's nailed on then he is a must-have at that price.

I'm fine with 3 FBs and 2 CBs given the mix of players. You can't go down to 2 FBs with those picks because you'll be needing to bench Coleman and Shaw at times to protect them from bad fixtures. You can just about be comfortable playing Mertesacker and Vertonghen every game (particularly for the first couple of months, looking at the fixtures).

If you're going to drop De Gea and upgrade a "donkey" midfielder, I'd suggest a stronger midfielder would probably offer better value than another CB. (I'd go Schurrle to Michu, then also maybe Hazard to Mata)

Well, apart from the de Gea and Bellamy questions, now there's also the Vertonghen question. He might be out of training for 3 weeks and could miss the start of the season. What do we do with situations like these?

A thought on Baines. A lot of his points come from penalty conversions. Surely he wouldn't get that opportunity at Man U. ahead of RVP. If he is moved, it will be interesting to see who takes the PKs at Everton.

With Baines I would argue that the additional clean sheet points at Man U would more than make up for lost pens. No idea who would take them for Everton in that event though.

I'm planning on making an update to the team this weekend. For Vertonghen I'd say keep him if it's only a niggly injury but if there's any chance of it dragging out then best avoid.
