ESPN EPL Fantasy Cup

Post by blueprint »

I have just noticed that ESPN are doing a cup game, much like other fantasy games. Below are the details as copied from the web site (I hope that's OK?)

You can check out your teams standing in the cup from the options that include View Squad, View Points top right above team graphic.

Fantasy Premier League Cup - Qualifying
The week starting January 12th is the qualifying round. The top 65,536 scoring teams will enter the first round (week starting January 19th). If the event of a tie for position 65,536 the team that registered for the game earliest will qualify.

Fantasy Premier League Cup - The knock-out rounds
Each qualifying team will be randomly drawn against another in the first round. The winner (the team with the highest weekly score), will progress to the second round and another random draw, the losers are out! This process continues until the final week when the two remaining teams contest the Fantasy Premier League Cup final.

If a cup match is drawn the following tie-breaks will be applied until a winner is found:

Most goals scored.
Most KC's.
Most clean sheets.
Registered first.

Here is a provisional calendar of the rounds:

Week starting Jan 12: Qualifying Round.
Week starting Jan 19: Round 1 - 65,536 teams
Week starting Jan 29: Round 2 - 32,768 teams
Week starting Feb 2: Round 3 - 16,384 teams
Week starting Feb 9: Round 4 - 8,192 teams
Week starting Feb 23: Round 5 - 4,096 teams
Week starting Mar 1: Round 6 - 2,048 teams
Week starting Mar 8: Round 7 - 1,024 teams
Week starting Mar 15: Round 8 - 512 teams
Week starting Mar 22: Round 9 - 256 teams
Week starting Mar 29: Round 10 - 128 teams
Week starting Apr 5: Round 11 - 64 teams
Week starting Apr 12: Round 12 - 32 teams
Week starting Apr 19: Round 13 - 16 teams
Week starting Apr 26: Round 14 (Quarter Finals) - 8 teams
Week starting May 3: Round 15 (Semi Finals) - 4 teams
Week starting May 11: Round 16 (Final) - 2 teams
N.B. Only Premier League matches count towards this competition.

I'm up against a team called 'Disturbed Footballers' that are ranked 44496th.
I am ranked 3216th so I look to have an easy game, but we all know how tricky cup games can be.

I didn't see anything about prizes, then again I wasn't looking for it. That said it's not mentioned in the bit I copied over so I doubt it.

Seems odd that they say Round 2 starts on 29th Jan (Tuesday) when there is now a Prem game (Villa v Blackburn on Saturday 26th) - moved from midweek. Will be a disadvantage to managers with players from those teams if ESPN don't now adjust the qualifying start date that week

Also in the section about when the rounds are it say's

"Here is a provisional calendar of the rounds:"

so this means it's open to some movement by ESPN.

Just got this back from the ESPN helpdesk (you get a good good service from those guys) : "We are going to move the start date of Round 2 to 26th January, rather than 29th. This was a fixture change, so obviously out of our hands. We will update the site very soon"

Did you ask them at the same time if there are any prizes for this Cup comp,or are we playing for pride only ?

I'm sure they'll offer some prizes, but it seems odd they've still not mentioned them on the website yet.

Scores have been updated for Round 1, my team through 56-22 (opponent had already given up).
Much tougher opponent in Round 2.

I too won with room to spare 47 - 13 :) 8-)

next up a team called Nemo ranked 4770 to my 2895 ranking. So it could be a close call.

They say that the draw is 'random' but it seems to me that they may be pairing-up people who are in the same general part of the league table. My team was only recently entered so sits down around 100,000th place. My opponents for both Rd 1 and Rd 2 were very similarly placed. Have others noticed this too ?

Seems random enough to me.
I am in 5th and played 68495th in Round 1.
Round 2, I'm up against 14732th.

I won my tie, on to the next round. I'm up against a team about 1000 places higher than I so it will be my hardest match yet.

Through 27-25 (brought in Gabriel Agbonlahor for Benjani on Sunday). Although that wasn't my most inspired selection this season, it did get me through unknowlingly with the 2 extra points.

I'm through as well and playing a team that is 27594 overall. So on paper I should win but this team has got through this far so must have been doing well of late. So not taking them for granted.

Just got through the latest round 53 - 24.
My next challenge is a team call DynamoUF who are ranked 54527 which even lower than the last guy I beat.
He must have started late or had a really bad start. Maybe even been lucky to have been playing really bad teams to have got so far in the cup. A lot of high ranked teams have gone so he must be doing something right. Will have to keep an eye on the fixtures to make sure I don't cock it up now.

I was less lucky - out 27-26 - perhaps I should've paid more attention to this ,though being off-line last week didn't help.
