Fantasy Sports Newsletter - FSN 93 on Tuesday 21 November 2006

============================================================================
Welcome to FISO's Fantasy Sports Newsletter number 93 issued on Tuesday 21 November 2006.

You are one of many thousands of worldwide fantasy sports fans who have subscribed to this newsletter. To update your profile please use the link at the end of this email.

This issue provides an introduction to two new games (Fantasy Football Weekly and Goalstradamus) and a summary of this year's mid-season rule change to The Times Fantasy Game.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fantasy Football Weekly (FFW)

http://www.playffw.com

Fantasy Football Weekly is a new weekly fantasy football game with a minimum £100 jackpot to be won every week. It's easy to play - simply check out the weekly Premiership fixtures and pick an 11 man team from the player list. The player prices vary each week depending on the fixtures and players in form, so you need to select a different 11 each week if you want to keep playing. This is not a season long game – each week there is a separate competition. Your first entry is free so there is no cost to try it out and there is a 1 in 10 chance of winning a prize every week.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goalstradamus

http://www.goalstradamus.com/

A free to play season long ‘results prediction’ game with a £10,000 first prize. Many entrants are still on zero points so there is no big disadvantage to entering late.

You can also share in FISO’s potential mini-league prizes of £11,000 by joining up using the following details:

Mini-League name: FISO.co.uk FORUM

Our mini league pin is: 12373-183

See more information on our mini-league here:

http://fantasyfootballuk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=15564

Predict the outcome of one game from each week's fixture list, scoring points along the way. No score predictions needed, just home win, away win or draw. The points available for each outcome are derived from the odds that bookmakers offer, and so the more unlikely an outcome is the more points it's worth. Each round’s fixture list will consist of around 60 matches taken from the Barclay's Premiership, Coca Cola Championship, Leagues 1 & 2, Scottish Premier League and Scottish Divisions 1 & 2

The Times They Are A-Changing (their rules once again!)

Many of those managers that have seen yet another mid-season rule change in The Times’ Fantasy Game may well have followed me in receiving a refund after withdrawing their entries. For those that have had the fortune to not play the Times’ game this year, here are the events as we saw them on the FISO Forum.

Before you do read on, please note that the game's rules had stated from the outset that managers could make up to 4 transfers per week (a week ran to Thursday) but for each half-season they were restricted to just 12 transfers, meaning a fairly cautious approach to transfer use was tactically appropriate.

On Thursday 14 September it was posted on the FISO Forum that one part of the rules on the game’s website did not mention the 12 transfer limit.

On Monday 18 September (in the 5th week of the competition) it came to our attention that some managers had already made more than the maximum 12 transfers.

On then attempting to clarify with the game’s Support Help Desk (run by Broadsystem, a News International subsidiary) managers received the following unhelpful response:

‘We are very sorry for the confusion caused but unfortunately we are
currently waiting for confirmation from the game's editors on the number
of team changes that are allowed for each half of the season.

The website should be updated with this information shortly so please
check out the site within the next few days.

Please again accept our apologies for the problems you have had and please contact us if you have any further queries’.

It was then noticed that on Friday 22 September that the games’ Terms & Conditions were changed from:

You can make up to four player transfers per Transfer Week to your team and a maximum of 12 player transfers in each half of the Game, making 24 transfers in total during the Game.

To:

You can make up to four player transfers per Transfer Week to your team.

And at 6pm BST on Friday 22 September the following email was sent by The Times to managers:

‘Transfer Changes

Dear Times Fantasy Football player,

Hope you are enjoying the season so far.

We have made an alteration to the transfer rules to make the game EVEN MORE interactive.

The number of total transfers that you make during the season is no longer capped at 24 (ie. 12 this side of the New Year and 12 in 2007).

The weekly limit still applies of 4 per week. That means you will be able to make four transfers per week, EVERY week for the remainder of the game’.

In mid-October The Times added a page to the game website accessed from the game home page stating:

Refunds Available

Further to a change in the number of transfers that can be made in the competition, it has come to our attention that this increase in game interactivity has not been received favourably by all players.

We firmly believed that this change would improve the structure of the game, allowing players to enjoy greater control over their selections throughout the course of the season.

At The Times newspaper, we always appreciate feedback from our readers. It is disappointing that a change that we considered to be in the best interests of the game have not been accepted by all.

To that end, we are prepared to offer a full refund for entrants who no longer wish to participate in the competition as a result of this game amend.

By accepting the refund, entrants will effectively revoke their involvement in the competition. This is a full and not a partial refund.

Requests for refunds will be accepted for a limited period only, from Friday October 13 2006 to 8pm Friday October 27 2006.

No refunds or correspondence will be accepted or entered into after 8pm Friday 27 October 2006 . Refunds will be processed within 28 days.

From the perspective of the typical manager, unresolved issues arising from the rule change include:

1. Why some managers were allowed to make more than 12 transfers prior to
the notified rule change on 22 September.

2. Those managers who have wisely been prudent with their transfers during
the first 5 weeks of the season were disadvantaged by the rule change.

3. The Game’s editors have not done everything possible to ensure all managers are aware of the rule change. For example, the managers’ transfer page still (on 20 November) states that they ‘can only make 12 transfers in each half of the season’.

We asked some of the leading managers in the Times’ Fantasy Game to comment on the rule change. Here’s what they had to say:

Shaun Goldsmith (over 80% of the top 100 teams belong to Shaun)

'I have mixed feelings about the change itself, on the one hand it means I'm having to spend a ridiculous amount of time making transfers and have had to abandon half my teams, on the other hand being aware of the change as soon as the final decision was made (having already been thinking about the strategic consequences, maximizing numbers of games etc.) seems to have improved my chances of winning.

What I really can't understand is how the change was handled. To post the change in one dark corner of the website while leaving four contradicting statements in separate sections of the website was just inept. This error was compounded by the games organizers refusal, for a period of around 10 days, to give the helpdesk the information they needed to clarify the situation to those calling to query.

I first became aware of the possibility of a rule change some time on 14 September, having noticed a post on FISO highlighting the new wording in the transfers section. I called and e-mailed the helpdesk, as well as writing two letters to News Promotions Ltd. seeking clarification. The helpdesk originally were quite sure that the change was intentional, but after a few days they retreated to their "waiting for the game's editors" position. I held fire with my transfers until the helpdesk informed me on 20 September at around 17:00 that the change was definitely going to be implemented. I posted this advice immediately on the relevant FISO thread and then started bringing players in for that night's league cup games. Up to that point, I had made an average of around 3 transfers in my teams. I received the formal e-mail notifying the change 48 hours later.

If I gained an advantage, it was not a huge one as I only had a couple of hours on Wednesday between being notified of the change and the 19:00 deadline to make transfers. I think that I gained a much more significant benefit from having considered the consequences of the change from the moment that I first noticed the post highlighting the changed wording of the transfers section. I was therefore ready to go when the change was confirmed.

It may be worth bearing in mind that I already had about 40% of the leaderboard prior to the change and the increase to around 80% was as a result of having Drogba/Martins/McCarthey combinations in most of my teams in a midweek when they scored six goals between them. At this time, everybody had been made aware of the change. It is also worth considering that anyone who phoned the helpdesk after 17:00 on 21 September would have received the same advice as I did, and that seasoned veterans that were following the FISO thread would also have been aware of the confirmation minutes after I was (including Andy Luckhurst, who posted on the subject within a very short time of my post).

I am aware of some entrants who had made 16 transfers in their teams prior to the changed wording on the website'.

Gary Griggs (currently in the top 100)

'I have played the Times game for the last 4 seasons. I have enjoyed the format, especially the inclusion of UEFA competitions.

There have always been problems with the running of the game (e.g. blatant scoring errors). This season, however, has been a real eye-opener! The decision to split the competition into 2 sections (LITE and PRO leagues) was very disappointing. The LITE competition (with no transfers allowed) is simply a lottery. The PRO league offered some hope, but things got off to a bad start when the organizers suddenly decided to move forward the published date of the pre-season transfer amnesty!
The painfully slow website hardly helped matters, but the best was yet to come....

Several weeks into the season, rumours surfaced that the Times website was allowing players to exceed the maximum number of transfers (12) permitted for the first half of the season! The Times helpdesk gave an unclear response to FISO players who raised this issue with them. Some players were given the impression that henceforth transfers would be unlimited and there would no longer be a limit of 12 for each half of the season. Understandably, many players were reluctant to believe this since it would mean that the organizers were actually changing the rules during the competition! Other players accepted what was said at face value and began a transfer frenzy. In other words, some players were playing by the original rules while others were ignoring them. Eventually the Times posted a statement on the website saying that players could now make 4 transfers per week for the rest of the season. It was stated that this would improve the "interactivity" of the game!

To change the rules after a competition has started is inexcusable. To notify some players before others is unthinkable!

We are only in October. What changes will occur between November - May is anybody's guess!'

Andy Luckhurst (past winner & currently in the top 100)

'The Times has been disingenuous with rule changes in the past, however on this occasion the whole game has been drastically altered. My belief is that as in the past this has been done to cover incompetent programming rather than amending it. I believe there were rumours on FISO that four changes a week were being allowed from the 5th week of the competition. It is disappointing that the leader (Shaun) was tipped off in advance (through no fault of his own) yet the Times continue to deny this could have happened despite Shaun actually posting it on FISO just before the deadline the week previous to the announcement.

I think that the members of FISO should be made aware of this and that the same team run the Sun competition. We have now started to see problems with that with team changes being visible during transfer windows now. In my experience this level of incompetence would be dealt with in most organisations but the Times (and therefore the Sun) support them.

I think it is good for fantasy football to have a variety of games but FISO members who just play a few games should be made aware that the Telegraph and Mirror do run excellent comparable games that have always dealt effectively and fairly with problems in their games.

As for the rule change I'd have entered maybe 6 teams instead of 40 as it is too time consuming. Apart from that I am not personally bothered either way apart from some people having an unfair advantage through using early transfers in a profligate manner and people being tipped off (we don't actually know how early some players were being tipped off) allowing them further extra transfers against the field. I also think the number of players you can pick from one club is too many (helping multi entries too much) and the original idea of 12 transfers per half should have been 24 throughout with a weekly maximum of 4.

I would add to that on the subject of refunds not offering partial refunds where you would have preferred a lower entry is unfair due to the extreme change in the rules. I cannot believe Shaun would not like the money back on the vast majority of his teams as would I however they want to keep the rest of anyone’s money for teams that are no longer required due to their incompetent rule change made after the commencement of the competition. Therefore the refund policy is not really a fair one as you would expect of the Times. There is of course no compensation for the effort made by entrants in their competition and never an apology of any type.'

Si Philbrook  (was challenging Shaun at the top in September)

'I think the new rules are better than the old ones but you shouldn't change once you've started. It’s a different game now, you can change your whole team every three weeks!

I think my teams were only affected in that the two at the top were caught a bit quicker than they would have been! Once I saw how many teams Shaun has I was expecting both leaderboards to be dominated by him sooner or later! I entered a couple of years ago and was well chuffed to reach the top 600 before finishing in the 18000's, so I'm still "over the moon" to have been top and "sick as a parrot" that I'm slipping slowly down.

The first I knew about the rule changes was when I was pleased to see Shaun had made some transfers. I thought I must be doing something right to force his hand! I don't check my email as often as I should but did so a few days later and found the rule change email. At first I seriously thought it was some sort of spoof. Some hacker with a bad sense of humour trying to get people to use up all their transfers! I then used google and found FISO.co.uk. I then thought that they've changed the rules to give others a chance to be as flexible as Shaun can with his huge amount of teams! (How many does he have?). I don't see any evidence that he was "tipped off". I just think he responded quickest because he eats sleeps and dreams this stuff and paid closer attention than most.

I lost probably four, at most six transfers to him at the changeover. I'd already made half that number because of injuries etc. So not a huge effect over a long season.

I've played in a game with friends based on times rules but with two transfers a week for the last five years, so I'm used to planning transfers to take advantage of midweek games etc.  It is a different game now, but one I've played before!

I think those worst affected are people who have maybe five teams or less, planned them for the marathon of a long season, didn't check or believe the email, and then find themselves left behind in a series of sprints!

I don't agree with changing rules after you start even if I like the new rules!'
