Fantasy Sports Newsletter - FSN 86 - 28 October 2005
Welcome to a FISO's Fantasy Sports newsletter
on Friday 28 October 2005.
Earlier this month FISO's Fantasy Sports forums were relaunched at - www.FantasyFootballUK.co.uk
- if you have not visited us in a while please do pop in for a look.
Below we have a run down of the closing position on three Fantasy Golf
competitions - Golf Fantasy Manager, Volvo Fantasy Golf and Fantasy League Golf.
Two of these competitions have been dominated by Milan Gajic (aka The Elkmaster)
who won the free to play Golf Fantasy Manager and is currently leading Volvo
Fantasy Golf going into the final tournament, the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.
Interview with Milan Gajic
FISO's thelip spoke to Milan earlier this week.
Hi Mil. Tell us a little bit about yourself. My name is Milan Gajic, 47 years
old, married for 25 years to Sue, 2 kids Philip 23 and Adam 19. The unusual name
is a product of my Yugoslavian Dad and my English mother. I was a coalminer for
16 years but since 1992 I have worked in Food Distribution. Currently work for a
large Dairy Firm.
Was this the first time you had entered a fantasy golf competition? No, I
entered OFL golf last year and done absolutely rubbish but enjoyed it. Also
entered OFL golf this year - same outcome as last year!
How did you feel when you found out you had won? Over the moon but a little
apprehensive given that the prize for winning had still not been sorted
(although it was confirmed this week).
Did you expect to win? Not when I initially entered, my knowledge of golf and
golfers was very limited.
Was there a point when you thought you might not win? Yes, when the game hosts
made a points error with about 4 rounds still to play, they wrongly dropped me
down to 3rd place. After 4 or 5 emails from myself they eventually corrected the
points and the leaderboard. (See below for comments from Silent Manager on the
points error).
How did you pick your players? Always checked out the bookies odds first, tried
to pick players who had good form in their last 5 or 6 games and also checked
where possible if the players had a good record playing the relevant courses.
As golfers, did you actually like the players you picked? Can honestly say that
I'd never heard of 90% of them.
Did you have any specific gameplan or tactics? Once I took the lead in July I
tried to attack from the front. I always did my transfers early picking which I
thought was the strongest team. In a game where everyone can see your team
line-up they would obviously look what I had chosen. If they wished to copy me
they could, they wouldn't gain any ground on me. Generally they would try to do
something different, I didn't mind because I believed I had chosen the strongest
team for that event.
Did the game reflect real-life golf? No, not at all. It had a very bizarre
scoring system, a player making the cut could actually end up with less points
than a player not making the cut.
What's the website like and is it user-friendly? The website was laid out well,
easy to use and very user friendly.
Is the format of the game easy to play? Once I'd got my head around the scoring
system, yes.
Are there any ways you would change or improve the game? No not really, as long
as the game rules are there for everyone to see from the start everyone has the
same advantages/disadvantages. I used to be against games where everyone playing
could see your team line-ups but if you couldn't in this game I would have never
known the hosts had made an error with the points.
Would you recommend this game to other fantasy game players? Yes, it was free to
enter...enjoy yourselves!
Do you play golf in real life, and if so, where and how well? Now you're asking!
I play golf on a regular basis..once a year!!!! I play with 3 mates every July
at our local 9 hole municipal course, 2 of them are keen golfers, 2 of us
aren't. I managed to come 3rd this year. Oh, I may have the odd game or two at
either The Belfry or St Andrews!
What prize did you win? A 2 night golfing break for myself and a friend at
either The Belfry or St Andrews Bay. (Still undecided where we will be going
yet). I won't be playing the golf (to save embarrassment) but will take the
break, I'm a dab hand in the 19th.
Who are you going to share it with? A good friend of mine Neill, he's a FISO
member - "Lister" whom I introduced this year. He's also one of the
mates who beats me at golf every July.
Will you enter again next year? Yes if the game is available.
Comments from Silent Manager on the points error mention by Mil above:
'As a fantasy game provider the integrity of the games in terms of correct
points allocation is imperative. We are realistic that mistakes do occur with
points when dealing with large quantities of data provided by third-parties, so
we do investigate every point query thoroughly. On some occasions the points
error's are not always easy to identify, so may take longer to identify and fix,
and more importantly allow us to ensure the same mistake does not happen again.
We're sorry Mil had to send '4 or 5' mails, but to assure him we would have
corrected the points anyway, as other game players would also have been
affected.'
Volvo Fantasy Golf
The final weekend of Volvo Fantasy Golf looks to be exciting for Mil with the
top 5 on the leaderboard prior to the Volvo Masters as follows and a holiday for
2 in Mauritius at stake for the winner:
1 The Elkmaster (Milan Gajic) 1599
2 JOHNNYS UNDER PAR 1580
3 Deadlies Diamond Geezers 1552
4 Baked 1541
5 Belt-em 1526
The teams of the top 5 are:
The Elkmaster
A Colin Montgomerie
B Luke Donald
C Angel Cabrera
D Paul Broadhurst
E Gonzalo Fernandez-Castona
JOHNNYS UNDER PAR
A Colin Montgomerie
B Luke Donald
C David Howell
D Paul Broadhurst
E Gonzalo Fernandez-Castona
Deadlies Diamond Geezers
A Michael Campbell
B Luke Donald
C Angel Cabrera
D José Manuel Lara
E Peter Gustafsson
Baked
A Colin Montgomerie
B Luke Donald
C David Howell
D Paul Broadhurst
E Peter Gustafsson
Belt-em
A Lee Westwood
B Miguel Angel Jiménez
C Nick O'Hern
D Paul Broadhurst
E Richard Finch
Scoring:
Fantasy points will be awarded based on the 'stroke play' of the players. The
fantasy points will also be weighted dependent on the European Tour category of
the player (i.e. Pool A players being the highest rank players and Pool E
players the lowest ranked). All players must complete all rounds in the
tournament being played to score fantasy points. The below table outlines how
points are to be awarded.
Golfer Category - Points for each shot under par - Points for Level Par - Points
for each shot over Par
Pool A +2 +1 -3
Pool B +4 +2 -2
Pool C +5 +2 -2
Pool D +6 +3 -1
Pool E +7 +3 0
So Mil will be cheering on Cabrera and hoping he outscores Howell. A high over
par score for Cabrera will lead to a loss of points for Mil.
Fantasy League Golf
Fantasy League Golf has the PGA Tour Championship next week as its finale but
the Volvo Masters is a double pointer so plenty of points on offer. The top 20
prior to the Volvo Masters is:
