Andy Luckhurst's 2004/05 EPL Preview
Seasoned-Pro, Andy Luckhurst takes us through his 2004/05 EPL
Fantasy Preview on 11 August 2004:
'Well this looks a genuinely interesting season and I hope to get
more involved in FF than I did last year. Again I'll do it in
betting order:
Arsenal
Worthy favourites even if Vieira does go. The defence should be
solid even if protection is reduced by defection of the Frenchman.
With Campbell currently injured Cole, Toure, Lehmann and Lauren
would be favoured in that order. You may decide it is worth using
Cygan as a cheap stop gap whilst Campbell recovers.
Midfield is harder to call. Pires is the top MF FF player at
present, but is priced accordingly. Hard to tell if Freddie will
come back or Pennant or Edu get a run. Maniche is touted as the
Frenchman's potential replacement.
One of the FF 10 commandments is thou shalt pick Henry. Whilst not a
100%, Striker and I can tell you how expensive it can be to ignore
him even when not fully fit ! If Reyes manages to displace Bergkamp
he will be obvious value.
Chelskov
Likely to be strong defensively. If you can get the FF players right
you may be on your way ! My guess is that the defense will be fairly
regular with Cudicini, Ferreira, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge maybe the
first choice. Gallas may be on his way if this happens.
Lampard is the obvious midfielder though picking the likes of Duff,
Cole and Robben at the right time may help your cause.
Drogba or Kezman could inspire or destroy your teams - don't ask me
!!
Man U
I personally thought Sir Alec lost it roughly a year to 2 years ago
and we now see a squad selected in a muddled way that may suffer
from being poorly thought out and put together. Match odds vs
Liverpool Mr Kellard or Mr Done ?
Obviously unlucky with injuries but the confusion over playing 4-4-2
or 4-2-3-1 has in my opinion cost them dear. Ronaldo is the critical
player an outstanding season from him may yet see them Champions,
but a disastrous one could see them missing Champions League
qualification.
Defensively look uncertain at present, but the return of Rio may
stabalise them.
Midfield Giggs, Scholes and Ronaldo all have obvious merits.
RVN will do ok once recovered but injury and more options for rest
may reduce his FF tally.
Liverpool
Impressive against an average Austrian team last night.
They are likely to be a stronger unit this year, particularly if
Xabi Alonso is purchased and manages to fit in. Having a top manager
will help !
Obvious defensive picks in Dude, Riise, Josemi, Hyppia and a
speculative one in Finnan.
In midfield Kewell is most likely to scale the heights and there is
a rumoured interest in Sean Wright-Phillips.
Owen looks on his way out if they can find a buyer and they will
surely need to buy if this happens. Cisse and Baros could give them
a great season or be responsible for a mediocre one.
Newcastle
Seem to be in a bit of disarray, but the additions of Woodgate and
Carr may help to stiffen that once feeble defence. Bernard is a fair
FF pick.
As previously stated I'm a big fan of Robert, but in D I Canio's
absence is he now the number one prima donna in the premiership.
Looks like the long term plan for this season may be to pair
Kluivert with Bellamy. Interesting to see what happens up front
which is where I feel their season may be lost !
Vanilla
Pleased to see O'Leary do well last season.
Defence is likely to be the strength, with Barry a popular FF choice
when listed as a defender. The rest of the defence is also likely to
be popular for FF purposes
I'm a big fan of Hitz, but not easy to make strong recommendations
for the Midfield, nor the Attack with Juan Pablo struggling with
injury.
Boro
A lot of people's tip to do well. Defence is both solid and
experienced. It will be interesting to see if Zenden and Mendieta
can build on their first seasons.
If they do well we could see JFH and Vid as the new dynamic duo - if
not an Anelka double sulko !?
Spurs
Looks like Santini is trying to sort them out by getting rid of the
old deadwood and trying to create a young dynamic team. I admire him
for having the guts to do this which I fear other Spurs managers
have been too chicken to do. I hope he succeeds (as does 64), but
your guess is as good as mine - at least he is trying to go forward,
at the risk of sliding back. Key for me is Defoe.
Brum
Great job by the Manager yet again. Not convinced Mr Shipley will
shoot off ahead of other mere Fantasy mortals by adopting their
defence this year. It will be interesting to see how the attacking
midfielders do this year and you may do well if picking the right
one. Forssell is obviously the key for them offensively.
Charlton
Not sure how this lot will do, but maybe lower mid table this year.
Rommedahl, Murphy and Euell could all be successful FF picks, but
none are guaranteed.
Fulham
Much like Spurs a somewhat revamped team, albeit more through lack
of choice. If they can do ok before the talismanic Malbranque
returns may spend more time thinking about UEFA qualification than
relegation. Reasonable FF picks throughout the side but no one that
totally sticks out.
Bolton
Should survive again and the midfield offers potential FF picks in
Okocha, Nolan and Stavros !
Blackbuirn
One of my 2 dark horses for relegation. All the same at some stage
in the season you may consider Emerton, Thompson, de Pedro, Stead
and Dickov. Stead burst on to the scene last year and his goals may
just keep them up
Man City
Looking a bit ageing to me, The potential loss of the incredible
sulk and SWP could see Keegan needing to be smarter than usual (in
my opinion) in the transfer market to stem the tide.
Having said that should have enough to stay up. Mills is a good
signing if he views it as a chance to get his England place back,
but if he sulks they could be in trouble defensively.
SWP is an obvious FF choice as would be Sibierski if playing more of
a regular part.
Everton
My other relegation dark horse. Very little quality there and if
Gravesen and Rooney are tempted away the key is how much of the
Rooney cash is given to Moyes to reinvest and what sort of job he
does with it.
Southampton
Were a great team unit under Strachan, but the midfield looks a bit
threadbare and Beattie seems disaffected so may be left to a solid
defence - even with Svensson injured - and Phillips to try to keep
them out of trouble, one of the favourites for a new manager.
Portsmouth
Well I did tip last years great escape. Should slowly consolidate
and Carrick would be a very good buy to that end. Taylor looks the
best FF defensive pick and Berger should he stay fit will do well.
I'd love to see a fit Todorov back partnering The Yak - now that
could really be an up-and-coming partnership.
WBA
Back to suggesting the three up are the three down. Just not enough
quality here bar the mercurial Koumas who is their best hope of
escape and a fair FF pick.
Norwich
Most likely to survive of those coming up with a top goalie and good
blend of youth and experience. The youngsters and the likes of a
determined Mackay along with sensible Scandanavian imports in
Jonsson and Helveg may just see the team being greater than the sum
of the parts. Jonsson and Bentley are potential FF picks. The bad
news if they stay up is another year of puerile Delia interviews !!
Crystal Palace
Dowie is well admired in the game and last year was a fairy story. I
expect the huge gap in class to be more like stones and glass houses
or Brothers Grimm ! Routledge is apparently the great hope.
Well that's all for this year folks ! Let battle commence !'

The 10 'Commandments' of Fantasy Premiership Football
The FISO forum members have come up with the following 10
'Commandments' when playing Fantasy Premiership Football:
- Thou shalt always read the rules thoroughly.
- Thou shalt covet thy transfers, and shalt not Tinker.
- Thou shalt pick a balanced team, and maintain flexibility in all
positions.
- Thou shalt, however, pick Thierry Henry.
- Thou shalt not worship 'Carlos Kickaball' until he has proven
himself in the EPL.
- Thou shalt remember that Form is Temporary, Class is permanent.
- Thou shalt not let thy heart rule thy head, especially after
drinking !
- Thou shalt not enter thy team earlier than reasonably required.
- Thou shalt remember that Fantasy Football is a Marathon not a
Sprint.
- Thou shalt remember that all commandments are there to be broken.

David Tonkin's 2004/05 EPL Review - 9 August 2004
My main thought with this article is to show my thought processes as
I consider which players to select for each competition that I may
enter (and hopefully find a bit of enthusiasm from somewhere as I
go).
Taking last season as a starting point - Arsenal were the top
scorers and tightest defence, both at home and away, won most games
and lost least (none if you didn't know). Chelsea were next best in
all departments but had considerably more clean sheets.
Arsenal have lost a few very experienced squad players over the
summer and have made no significant signings, the ever continuing
Vieira saga (who is apparently injured anyway) can do nothing for
anyone's confidence at the moment. The same first 11 will be
expected for the coming season (assuming that Vieira stays) but I
just can't see them having the same success for 2 main reasons, the
loss of a number of consistent, experienced back up players and the
other 19 clubs should put that extra bit of effort into playing the
champions.
Chelsea on the other hand have a new manager and have changed a
third of their first team squad. Possibly a key area of change is in
defence with Melchiot and the clearly past his best Desailly being
replaced to the tune of £32+M. Surely these changes can only make
the defence even better? An important question for the fantasy
manager is over the choice of keeper, the established Cudicini or
the new boy Cech? £200M spent in just over a year and still no right
winger, curious. £30M spent on a new forward line, a concern for the
fantasy manager that the new players are unproven in the EPL but
with the knowledge that there's probably going to be a bandwagon to
jump on, is it worth the risk of being on it from the start?
Man U had the third best defensive record, the fact that two thirds
of their goals conceded come in the second half of the season and
coincided with the Ferdinand suspension won't be lost on many, the
signing of Heinze has to be a positive move and should improve on
their poor return of away clean sheets but whether one player can
make enough difference remains to be seen. With Van Nistelrooy out
for the first month Smith becomes a very interesting cheaper option
up front alongside Saha. Quality cover in most positions seems to be
lacking.
16 points covered the 12 teams from Liverpool in 4th to Blackburn in
15th, all these teams were in a range of 12 goals scored (Liverpool
55 - Birmingham 43) and a range of 22 goals conceded (Liverpool 37 -
Blackburn 59) no major difference in the games won (Liverpool 16 -
Blackburn 12) so in my view the main differences between the teams
were the odd goal either scored, missed or conceded here and there.
How much closer than 15 points behind Man U would Liverpool have
been if they'd had a 100% penalty taker? Would Fulham have stayed in
the top 4 if they'd kept Saha and his goal scoring? How about
Birmingham if they'd had better midfield delivery and more help for
Forssell up front? Middlesbrough if they'd have had one decent
striker? Similar questions could be asked of most clubs in this
range, where one performing player more or less for each club in a
handful of games could easily have reversed the finishing order.
Newcastle and Portsmouth are exceptions as both produced top 4 home
form but relegation deserving away form, this appears to be
something psychological that has more to do with the manager than
anything else. Both managers have had poor away records in previous
EPL seasons too so my reasoning says not to expect any change in the
season ahead.
Man C in 16th were joint 4th highest scorers but over a third of
their goals came from 4 big home wins (and they only won 5 at home
all season!) defensively weak and with Anelka being targeted by
Monaco they could be in serious trouble in the coming season. The 3
defensive signings don't appear to be of any great use, the new
keeper is already out for the season, Thatcher has been a part of
some terrible defences over recent seasons and Mills is a
disciplinary nightmare.
Everton is a club in a mess and could well be this season's Leeds
with the exception that they have just the one saleable asset in
Rooney.
Of the 3 promoted clubs West Brom have the recent EPL experience to
know what's needed to stay up this time. Norwich and Palace have
signed a number of "who are they" types and will almost certainly be
doomed to relegation by the time they've worked out what the
Premiership is about.
The question for me now is which clubs have done something to
improve on their weak areas?
Liverpool have a new manager and Cisse to support Owen, their first
11 should be strong in both attack and defence and could well be
good enough to challenge at the top as long as they don't have to
rely too often on the squad players.
Newcastle have brought in Kluivert and Butt, both should prove to be
positive additions but whether either will make any difference to
the club's dislike of travelling is another matter entirely.
O'Leary has proven that he is a decent manager at Villa but without
real money to spend I can't see him taking them any further up the
table. Well organised in all areas they should provide decent squad
fillers in all positions.
Charlton's season fell away following the January sale of Parker
(and during the weeks that he was unsettled leading up to the move),
the sale of the influential Jensen isn't going to help their cause
either. I feel that Curbishley has done all he can there and that
they're in for a long struggle this time.
Bolton had a very good season and could well have been contenders
for a UEFA spot if all the eggs hadn't gone into the League Cup
basket. Several more highly experienced players have joined the
squad during the summer, another group of likely squad fillers in
all areas, defensively sound last season except for three early away
hammerings making their stats look bad.
Fulham were defensively sound all season but the goals all but dried
up when Saha left, the summer signings don't look to have that extra
something to adequately replace him but they should be much better
than the 17th place I have them down for at the moment and they
should also provide reasonable squad fillers.
Birmingham's signings look to be ideal to strengthen their forward
play and compete for a European spot, how many goals will come from
Izzet wide to Gronkjaer, crossed to Heskey and knocked down for
Forssell to score? Melchiot will add to the defence too making the
club as a whole look stronger than ever, a few first choices from
them.
Middlesbrough look to me to have made the best signings of the
summer, a top striker has been lacking for seasons now they gone and
signed 2 proven marksmen to feed off their already very attacking
midfield. The centre backs could now be the problem area, if they
stay fit a CL spot is very possible.
Southampton did okay at home (3rd worst goals for though) and were
poor away (goals scored and results), the forward line has plenty of
potential so the problem must be in supply but the signing of Crouch
could mean that the long ball game is intended (denied by the
manager). The 16 clean sheets they gave up was joint worst in the
league (with Spurs) Tabloid suggestions that Hoddle is being lined
up to replace Sturrock "if he doesn't settle" may or may not be
true.
Portsmouth were the 3rd highest scorers at home and worst away
although it's worth noting that 19 of their 35 home goals came in 4
big wins. West Ham under Redknapp were often amongst the best at
home and worst away until the home form slumped too and he got the
sack.
Spurs have turfed out the elderly and the infirm during the summer
and have a new manager and several new signings in defence and
midfield, whether signing the keeper that was beaten most in the EPL
last season is a good move or not remains to be seen. Could be
anything from UEFA challengers to relegation candidates this time
around.
Blackburn had another inconsistent season, the worst home form (they
lost 10, next worst was 7) but did reasonably well away from home.
Probably another season where any match involving them could have
any result.
So it's my opinion that defensive selections should come from
Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Birmingham,
Fulham and Bolton with the possible risk of a West Brom defender
here and there.
Midfield and forward selections from Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea,
Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham and Middlesbrough.

Get In The Game - with Nigel Ridgway of bet365 - UK Edition
Written by: Nigel Ridgway (2004-08-12 00:05:05)
Barclaycard Premiership
*******************
Starts Sat Aug 14
Another Premiership season is nearly upon us, and although Arsenal
ran away with the title last season, it is Chelsea who are fancied
to pip them this term. Of course, Arsenal will still be right up
there, but the news of Patrick Vieira's wish to move to Spain makes
it tough to side with the Gunners at the current price of 6/5. They
still have the same nucleus of the squad that were unbeaten last
season but there is no doubt that without Vieira they are not as
strong. Thierry Henry may well bring the same amount of brilliance
that he brought to the Premiership last season, but if he doesn't
and struggles to make another 37 League starts, you might wonder
where the goals are going to come from? Furthermore the loss of Sol
Campbell until sometime in September to injury leaves a rather large
gaping hole in defence that will be tough to fill.
There is a lot to like about Chelsea's chances, although their price
of 2/1 doesn't quite compare to the double figure quotes available
before last season in the days prior to Abramovich's arrival. Last
season's charge to second pace and an appearance in the Champion's
League semi-finals at Arsenal's expense clearly showed that the
London club are now a major force in the Premiership and a challenge
to the 'big two' of old. What's more they look to be a progressive
unit, and although they were good last season they can be expected
to be even better this season under Jose Mourinho, especially if he
can put belief into the squad like he did with the players at Porto.
Most of last season's players remain, but can only be enhanced by
the new signings. Paulo Ferreira is a very good full-back while at
the other end the arrival of Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman should
be a major upgrade to the striking force.
Alex Ferguson's Manchester United must do without several key
players for the first few weeks of the season, including Ruud Van
Nistlerooy who will be absent until September, while they also look
vulnerable in midfield. Despite their previous record of always
bouncing back after a disappointing season, the current price of 5/2
is not a big enough temptation to warrant support. Of the rest it is
almost impossible to imagine the Premiership being won by anyone
other than the market leaders.
The battle for fourth place and the automatic Champion's League
place that goes with it can be won by Middlesbrough, who have bought
brilliantly over the summer. Last season's Carling Cup winners have
bought in the likes of Reizeger, Viduka and Hasselbaink as they
prepare for a UEFA Cup campaign. They can be backed at 12/1 in our
'Without Arsenal Chelsea and Man Utd' market. For Relegation,
Southampton look better value at 8/1 than the promoted trio. The
Saints are by no means certain to keep James Beattie, or manager
Paul Sturrock for that matter - now 7/1 in our 'Sack Race' market.
bet365 Premiership prices... Arsenal 6/5, Chelsea 2/1, Man Utd 5/2,
Liverpool 14/1, others on bet365 website. Each way ¼ 1.2.3.
Chelsea v Man Utd
***************
Su Aug 15 - 16.05 BEST ko (SS1)
Chelsea can hit the ground running with a win over United at
Stamford Bridge this Sunday, a game that is going to have a massive
impact in the rest of the season. If last weeks' performance in the
Community Shield is anything to go by, United are going to struggle
to find the extra couple of gears that will be required to get off
the mark against Chelsea. Apart from Alan Smith's superb equalising
goal there was little encouragement for United fans, and it is not
difficult to see Mourinho's side exploiting the apparent lack of
cohesion shown by the United back-line in Cardiff. Back Chelsea at
6/5 to take all three points, and then take advantage our fantastic
FREE IN-RUNNING BET on the game.

bet365 match prices... Chelsea 6/5, Draw 11/5, Man Utd 9/4.
Great St Wilfrid Handicap, Ripon 6f
****************************
Sa Aug 14
The revitalized Jonny Ebeneezer looks the best bet to land this
prestigious sprint handicap (15.15). His four latest wins have all
been achieved in the last three weeks, and he showed no sign of
going off the boil when bolting in over this trip on good to soft
ground at Windsor on Monday night. Despite a 4lb penalty for that
win, the David Flood trained gelding is actually 'well-in' on
Saturday, being able to race off a mark of 83, still 3lb below his
highest successful rating achieved at Goodwood nearly two years ago.
He will be better suited than some by the likely easy ground, as
will Cd Europe, who had no luck in running in the Steward's Cup last
month, doing really well to finish tenth, not beaten far. Dropped a
few pounds since to a mark from which he was successful last
November, he looks the value alternative to the favourite.
Confidence in either horse's chances would be increased by a draw
next to either rail, with recent stats suggesting that horses drawn
in the middle berth having a major disadvantage.
bet365 Gt St Wilfrid prices... Jonny Ebeneezer 6/1, Mutawaqed 7/1,
Machinist 8/1, Pic Up Sticks 9/1, Cd Europe 14/1, others on bet365
website.

following live Channel 4 races on Saturday, and have a free bet to

Th Aug 12 - 19.00 BST (SS1)
Fr Aug 13 - 19.00 BST (SS2)
Sa Aug 14 - 16.00 BST (SS2)
Su Aug 15 - 16.00 BST (SS2)
The final Major of the season is being played at Whistling Straits
in Wisconsin, a brand new course designed along the lines of a
classic British links course, being located on the shores of the
wind swept Lake Michigan. At over 7,500 yards it is also the longest
course in Major championship history, and if the wind blows a score
over par, maybe well over par, is almost certainly expected to win
the tournament. In fact, a 'Winning Score' of 290 (2 over par) and
over is favourite at 7/4 here at bet365. For the winner a case can
be made for a whole number of players including Tiger Woods, who
looked near to peaking again in his last event, and Phil Mickelson,
who has successfully geared his season around the Majors (1st, 2nd
and 3rd this season). Ernie Els and Vijay Singh will have their
supporters too, but they could all be bigger prices in our
In-Running market, and the pre-tournament value could lie elsewhere?
There is a strong contingent of Australians in with a chance this
week, and the boys from down under may well be inspired to lift
their games further by compatriot Rod Pampling's win in Colorado on
Sunday. Adam Scott has already won twice in the States this year,
and his superb long-iron play could be the key on a course with
three par fours over 500 yards. He does lack 'links' form, however,
and at the prices the chances of fellow Aussie Stuart Appleby are
preferred. Having reached an Open play-off back in 2002, and with a
good effort in last year's Australian Open on the similarly styled
Moonah Links course, he looks ideally suited to cope with the
rigours of Whistling Straits. He also fits the profile of previous
USPGA winners - a player in his thirties winning his first Major
having won on the regular Tour - while his record in this event has
been most consistent - 23-17-16-4 in the last four years! He looks
worthy of support, not only in our outright market, but also in our
'Top Rest Of World' market at 14/1.
The stats are strongly against a European win this week, with none
having won this Major since the event became a strokeplay event back
in 1958. In fact the last time a European won a major of any
description was back in 1999, when Paul Lawrie took the Open
Championship. However, the European contingent will take heart from
the links layout of this course, and the likes of Garcia and
Harrington must have a great shout on a course that will demand
shotmaking flair and a great touch around the greens, just their
sort of game. Another European player with strong credentials this
week is Alex Cejka, who gave European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard
Langer a timely reminder of his talents with a superb second place
in the International on Sunday. Cejka was also top European in last
year's US PGA, so August would seem to be his month, while his
length and accurate driving will be a major asset this week, and he
looks value at 20/1 in our 'Top European' market.
The tournament within a tournament this week is certainly the race
for the Ryder Cup team, with as many as seven spots on the US team
still up for grabs. That race must end on Sunday, which gives John
Daly a bigger incentive than most to perform well this week. He is
currently 20th in the standings, and probably requires the captains
pick to get into the team, but he must be relishing the prospect of
tackling the longest course in major history, as no one hits the
ball further than him. This is also the tournament in which he made
history back in 1991, when he arrived at Crooked Stick as ninth
reserve, and proceeded to tear the field apart with an awesome
display of power and finesse to take the title. Four years later he
added the Open at St Andrews to his Major portfolio, and it must
hurt that he is the only double Major winner who has not played in a
Ryder Cup. He will not be phased by being paired with Tiger Woods
and Vijay Singh over the first two days, and will not want for the
support of the galleries either, so he looks a fair bet to outscore
his two opponents in 3-ball bets, and should also be supported in
our 'Top American' market at 33/1.
Get in the game and be lucky!
Nigel.
