David Tonkin's Monthly Premiership Review - March 2004

Two thirds of the season has now passed, the first trophy has been

won (ever) by Middlesbrough who have qualified for next season’s

UEFA Cup. Arsenal have stretched their lead to 9 points over Chelsea

and Man U along with their unbeaten record to 27 matches, but it’s

not over yet! Any loss of form at this stage of the season could

allow either or both of the chasing teams to catch them. The next

six in the table all still have a very good chance to take the

fourth CL berth, the next 4 just need to pick up enough points to

remain clear of any late surge from those below, Europe now looks

beyond them. The three relegation places still look to be filled by

three of the bottom four although the next 3 places above them are

certainly not safe at this stage.

Liverpool v Portsmouth may be played during the month depending on

cup results.

Arsenal (WwWwW – 67 +35) Blackburn (a) Bolton (h) Man U (h) 7

straight wins have given them a nice and possibly decisive cushion

at the top but the title still has to be won. The trip to Ewood Park

could provide a stumbling block or another straightforward 3 points,

the final match of the month stands out, another win will surely

cement the title but how many players will walk off the pitch at END

of the match? A few goals for Edu recently, oh, and Henry of course.

Chelsea (wWwLw – 58 +27) Bolton (a) Fulham (h) Wolves (h) a very

good month despite the league and cup losses to Arsenal, another 3

wins here should keep them in second place and in touch should

Arsenal slip up. 15 clean sheets so far, more are expected. Still no

outstanding scorer, perhaps Duff returning to fitness will provide

one of the strikers with a chance to shine, which one is the big

question.

Man U (wLDd – 58 +26) Man C (a) Spurs (h) Arsenal (a) a poor 2004 by

their standards so far, the defence has been shipping goals recently

coupled with some strange team selections has resulted in a slip to

third place, unless there’s a change in form quickly this month

could see the possibility of a treble reduced to nothing. Saha has

continued to score since his move and is a clearly a cheap option in

many FF games.

Newcastle (WdWd – 42 +10) Spurs (a) Charlton (h) Bolton (a) unbeaten

so far in 2004, 4 wins out of 4 at home and 4 draws out of 4 away

making a total of 9 away draws for the season, a distinct

improvement on last season’s away form. They’ll need an away win or

two to keep their hold on the final CL place. Bellamy has scored 4

in 4 since returning from injury.

Charlton (lLWl – 40 +4) Middlesbrough (h) Newcastle (a) Villa (h) 3

derbies lost in February, an inferiority complex when facing the

bigger London clubs perhaps? The trip to the north-east could get

them back into 4th, a couple of wins are needed at the very least to

keep them in with a shot at European football next season. Points

are coming from most of the midfield and perhaps Cole will get a run

alongside Di Canio for a few games.

Liverpool (dWd – 39 +9) Southampton (a) Wolves (h) Leicester (a)

*Portsmouth (h)* another average month passes by and they’re still

in sniffing distance of the CL place, somehow, wins are needed to

keep in the fight. Gerard is the driving force at the moment, if he

can stay fit wins are a distinct possibility, maybe Owen will get in

the goals before his next injury.

Aston Villa (WwDl – 37 +0) Wolves (a) Blackburn (h) Charlton (a) a

decent February behind them, March looks to give good opportunities

to keep them in the UEFA hunt. Vassell, Angel and Hitzlsperger look

to be the scoring choices.

Fulham (dLlD – 36 +1) Leeds (h) Chelsea (a) Man C (a) the slide down

the table continues but they remain in touch with Euro qualification

places, they’ll quite likely be further away by the end of this

month, their season could well end in the cup tie at Old Trafford.

Malbranque + who?

Birmingham (dWd – 36 -3) Middlesbrough (h) Bolton (h) Leicester (h)

Middlesbrough (a) Leeds (h) back in the clean sheets with 3 from

their last 5 and unbeaten in 6, two more games than most to play

this month and just 6 points off 4th place, 5 very winnable games

here and all excellent chances of clean sheets too!

Spurs (WwD – 34 -3) Middlesbrough (a) Newcastle (h) Man U (a)

Southampton (a) can they keep the “Tottenham 4” sequence going? The

defence is poor but whilst Defoe and Keane are scoring for fun does

it matter? Difficult looking fixtures, possibly better just watched

rather than relied upon for anything.

Bolton (DdL – 34 -8) Birmingham (a) Chelsea (h) Arsenal (a)

Newcastle (h) a lot of their eggs went into the Carling Cup basket

can Allardyce pick them up for these 4 very difficult fixtures? I

can’t see them getting anything at all out of March apart from

Jaaskelainen suffering a bad back picking the ball out of the next a

dozen times or more.

Southampton (DlDd – 33 0) Liverpool (h) Portsmouth (a) Spurs (h) a

totally uninspiring and uninspired team at the moment and will

probably remain so even when a new manager is in place.

Middlesbrough (Lwl – 31 -4) Birmingham (a) Spurs (h) Charlton (a)

Birmingham (h) Everton (a) with Europe already in the bag should we

expect relaxed flowing football from Mendieta, Zenden and Juninho

that could provide a string of good results or will they relax too

much and not be willing to scrap for points?

Everton (LlDW – 29 -6) Portsmouth (h) Leicester (a) Middlesbrough

(h) they’ve finally won in 2004, conceding 10 goals in the 3

previous games, chances for points herebut losses to the teams below

them will drag them deeply into the relegation fight for the rest of

the season.

Blackburn (LwDlD – 28 -5) Arsenal (h) Villa (a) Portsmouth (h) they

haven’t won at home since November and they’ve been letting in

plenty of goals, a win against Arsenal would be typical! Another

poor month will bring those below them closer.

Man C (lDlwL – 27 -3) Man U (h) Leeds (a) Fulham (h) their last home

win was the 6-2 against Bolton back in October, unlucky as Keegan

says or just plain rubbish? Wright-Phillips sparkled against Chelsea

but with no end product, his 4 goals this season make him their 3rd

highest scorer behind Anelka (who will return from suspension at

Leeds) and Fowler who’s been looking much sharper of late.

Portsmouth (lLd – 24 -11) Everton (a) Southampton (h) Blackburn (a)

*Liverpool (a)* still to register a PL away win, big matches here

with clubs just above them in the table, do they have the players to

do it? Could Lua Lua be their saviour?

Wolves (LlWd – 24 -28) Villa (h) Liverpool (a) Chelsea (a) the other

team without a PL away win and highly unlikely to break their duck

this month.

Leicester (lDdD – 23 -14) Birmingham (a) Everton (h) Liverpool (h)

13 games and 3 months since their last win, 3 consecutive draws and

4 draws from their last 5 aways, wins are needed and the Everton

match looks their best chance in march.

Leeds (lWdD – 22 -27) Fulham (a) Man C (h) Birmingham (a) have they

started a status saving run? A big question mark remains over the

clubs future but where there’s life there’s hope. Smith and Viduka

to save them again?
