Arsenal v Southampton has been moved to the midweek between the May fixtures due to the FA Cup semis. In league order this month (this may help or hinder your selections) with points and goal difference before the fixtures. OFL related points comments. Arsenal (66 +33) – Aston Villa (a) Man U (h) Middlesbrough (a) Bolton (a) are they running out of steam approaching the final furlong? Out of Europe and have both Man U and Newcastle breathing down their necks. The Man U match could be a title decider but not if they drop points in any of their 3 away matches. Unlikely to be distracted by the FA Cup semi, the league will be top priority. March points were spread throughout the team, Henry’s 2 assists made him top scorer. Man U (64 +24) - Liverpool (h) Newcastle (a) Arsenal (a) Blackburn (h) Spurs (a) a very tough set of fixtures and they’ve got Real Madrid to play home and away in the Champions League too! The squad has to be at full stretch for these matches, surely some key players won’t be risked in all 7 matches, rotation could see the title challenge slip away. Good points in most positions, Van Nistelrooy’s hatrick made him their leading points scorer. Newcastle (61 +19) - Everton (a) Man U (h) Fulham (a) Aston Villa (h) Sunderland (a) 5 wins will almost certainly see them enter May at the top of the table, not unthinkable is it? Again, points in all areas, Solano being the top scorer. Chelsea (54 +26) - Sunderland (a) Bolton (h) Aston Villa (a) Everton (h) Fulham (h) still hanging onto the 4th CL spot, not a daunting set of fixtures in the least but considering the home cup loss was probably caused by further tactical ineptitude a few dropped points wouldn’t be beyond belief. Good points in most positions, Terry just leading the way from Le Saux, Gallas and Stanic. Liverpool (52 +16) - Man U (a) Fulham (h) Everton (a) Charlton (h) West Brom (a) 3 wins from 3 in March has kept this highly criticised squad in the running for Euro qualification, a couple of very big away matches to play that will have a bearing on both the title and who plays in Europe. (remember they’ve already qualified for the UEFA Cup by winning the Worthless) All areas scored something, Owen and Gerrard the most worthwhile. Everton (50 +3) – Newcastle (h) West Brom (a) Liverpool (h) Chelsea (a) Aston Villa (h) are they challenging for the CL spot or trying to hang on to a UEFA one? Just 2 points in March says hanging on but the outcome is in their own hands if they’re good enough, the poor goal difference counts against them. Most defenders scored something, nothing at all in midfield, a little from the forwards. Charlton (46 +1) – Leeds (h) Blackburn (a) Birmingham (h) Liverpool (a) Southampton (h) unlikely to catch Chelsea but the 2 Liverpool clubs are certainly still within reach even though just 1 point was collected in March. Negative scores for the defenders, nothing in midfield, a goal and an assist up front. Blackburn (46 +1) – Fulham (a) Charlton (h) Man U (a) Bolton (h) Leeds (a) 6 points and one stuffing in March, half the players are falling out with the manager and any result is possible in any match, more likely to have a say in who goes down rather than where the title and Euro spots go, then again ……. Most of the goals were from midfield, very little or worse elsewhere, Duff was top scorer. Southampton (44 +2) - West Ham (h) Leeds (h) Birmingham (a) Charlton (a) 5 points in March, more goals for Beattie, still in touch with a UEFA spot and 3 of the strugglers to play, anything is possible however unlikely! Well Beattie got another 3 goals in March. Spurs (43 -1) – Birmingham (h) Leeds (a) Man C (h) West Brom (a) Man U (h) still sliding slowly down the table after their early season lead following another 3 losses in March, still in with a chance of Euro qualification and all these fixtures are winnable, Keane is back, tempted? Sheringham’s 1 goal makes him the top scorer, most defenders scored negatively. Middlesbrough (42 +4) – West Brom (h) Man C (a) Arsenal (h) West Ham (a) Birmingham (a) 2 wins and 2 draws in March, another club where the mathematical possibilities of a Euro spot still exist until they drop points. Points scored in all areas, Queudrue being top scorer closely followed by Juninho and Geremi. Man C (41 -9) – Bolton (a) Middlesbrough (h) Spurs (a) Sunderland (h) West Ham (h) 1 goal, 3 points and -5 goal difference in March, certainly capable of winning most games but lacking consistent quality performances. The one clean sheet meant that the stuffing didn’t do much damage to defensive points, the one goal meant that Fowler was top scorer. Fulham (38 -5) - Blackburn (h) Liverpool (a) Newcastle (h) Leeds (a) Chelsea (a) 1W 1D 1L in March, capable of taking points in any game as long as Malbranque is playing. Saha was top man for the month, some defenders gained you points, others cost you. Aston Villa (36 -4) - Arsenal (h) West Ham (a) Chelsea (h) Newcastle (a) Everton (a) unfortunately unlikely to go down but 5 losses here are very possible so they may still be caught, hopefully. Negative points at the back, one goal each for Hendrie and Vassell. Birmingham (35 -14) – Spurs (a) Sunderland (h) Charlton (a) Southampton (h) Middlesbrough (h) certainly not safe yet, the Sunderland match looks to be the most likely (only?) opportunity to pick up a win. Good defensive points, Lazaridis and Horsfield were the only scorers in front of them. Leeds (34 -13) – Charlton (a) Spurs (h) Southampton (a) Fulham (h) Blackburn (h) how the mighty have fallen! Sack the manager, sell the players, sack another manager, replace him with a proven failure, no confidence, no self-belief, no points but they do usually score one goal a game – going down??? Defenders were a liability, an assist each for 3 midfielders, Viduka scored 4 goals. Bolton (32 -13) – Man C (h) Chelsea (a) West Ham (h) Blackburn (a) Arsenal (h) the first 2 homes are clearly big matches, another 2 wins should lift them another place or 2 and to relative safety. Good defensive points for most players, Okacha’s 2 goals made him the best choice in front of them. West Ham (30 -19) – Southampton (a) Aston Villa (h) Bolton (a) Middlesbrough (h) Man C (a) 7 points won in March and all these games look within their scope at the moment, it might even be a thought to include their defenders for the run in!!!! (that’s a thought, not advice!) Top defensive performance of the month with 3 clean sheets, a goal and assist from 3 players in front of them. West Brom (21 -26) – Middlesbrough (a) Everton (h) Sunderland (a) Spurs (h) Liverpool (h) still losing and still not by much but failing to score won’t gain them many points. Defenders got a minus point, everybody else got nothing at all. Sunderland (19 -31) – Chelsea (h) Birmingham (a) West Brom (h) Man C (a) Newcastle (h) another 3 losses with no goals scored in March, 2 defenders did get a positive point which tells you that the manager in his wisdom took off defenders at 0-0 and goals were conceded within 5 minutes of each substitution, no surprise that they’re going down then is it? Perhaps if they accept the fact that they’re going down then a clean sheet or two might be kept and maybe even a goal nicked giving them a win. Comment on David's review on this forum thread. New Fantasy Football Games We've recently received information from the webmasters of the following games: GI Fantasy Soccer is a roleplay fantasy football management league currently with a 20-man Premiership and a Division 1 in the making. It's been going since 2000 and has attracted around 100 members over the years. There are matches every week on Saturdays and International matches on Wednesdays which occur monthly when a team of the best in-form is chosen from all 20 premiership clubs. The site is expanding all the time, looking for new keen members and new staff to join the current team. The GI is worth a try. Click here to access the forum thread on GI Fantasy Soccer UFC: UFC is a simulated game in which managers are appointed and control the day to day running of the team through a message board. This is a fantasy game using the Ltrack system. It's free to play and uses a forum system to keep everyone updated. This uses the MSN groups forum but will shortly become a stand alone. The Andy Luckhurst Horseracing Tipster Corner I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip for FISO members. I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. Today's report starts with an Aintree Grand National preview: Well first a point or two. You are likely to get a better price today on a fancied runner than Saturday, although I expect concessions like 1/4 odds e/w 1st to 5th and money back first fence faller. The going will be critical and the clerk of the course may be exaggerating the going change at good to soft. Aintree can dry out quickly or become a quagmire with heavy rain on watered ground. I expect genuine good ground that should be decent enough to get the ditherers to have a go. If you want to back something over 11stone history is against you and if you are backing something to carry 11st6 plus you are looking at a freak, even bearing in mind the easier conditions, better quality of horse and possibly fairer weighting system. This leaves me with Gunther McBride, Youlneverwalkalone, Maximize, Monty's Pass, Bindaree and Ad Hoc in that order. Gunther McBride has the perfect profile of a well weighted front runner who likes decent ground and stays well enough. He may not run but is worth a bet on money back terms. Same for Youlneverwalkalone in some respects, I expect him to run and start favourite so non runner money back is value as already highlighted. Maximize is a front runner with a touch of class and fairly weighted might just be an ideal National type. Monty's Pass is the tip of some fair judges although I just doubt the overall quality of his form. Bindaree may be a National specialist and 25/1 seems fair. Ad Hoc is simply too short a price and if you still intend backing him I would expect a better price on the day - maybe even 10/1. Usually you can narrow the field more easily on good ground but this seems maybe the best quality National ever, and with the prizemoney and easier conditions I expect the trend to continue. Other Tips: It looks like Statue of Liberty will not be ready in time for the 2000 Guineas although he is still a possible. I would suggest a minimal bet on Refuse to Bend who you hopefully already have at a very good price for the Derby, in the hope that he is something special and may be capable of winning a classic at slightly under distance. Don't forget to see 'oddschecker' for the best odds - Andy. Catch more of Andy's tips on the Beat The Bookies part of the FISO forum. |
