David Tonkin's Monthly Premiership Review - March 2003

March arrives with most teams having played 28 fixtures with the

only outstanding fixture scheduled to be played early in the month.

Be careful with the first set of fixtures, 3 of them have been moved

to the following week due to TV and the Worthless Cup final,

mistiming in OFL’s week will again add to the lottery feeling for

those left in the KO stages.

It can be no coincidence that the top 3 in the table are also the 3

teams playing in the CL 2nd group stage, Arsenal are still looking

very strong to take the title but any slip and one or both of Man U

and Newcastle are close enough to take advantage. The 4th qualifying

spot is more open now, Chelsea are still hanging in there despite

the unimpressive sequence that started with the Xmas / New Year

tinkering. Everton, Charlton, Liverpool and Spurs will all be hoping

to take 20+ points from their remaining fixtures to either take that

4th spot or at worst one of the UEFA places, they can’t all make it!

Blackburn, Southampton and Man C need to win every game to join the

Euro pack.

At the bottom Sunderland and West Brom continue to look doomed, West

Ham have Bolton and Birmingham in their sights.

OFL related points scoring below.

Arsenal – Charlton (h) Blackburn (a) Everton (h) this looks to be a

competitive set of matches, the 2 visiting sides need points for

European qualification, whether they’ll be good enough to get any is

a different matter. February was again the Pires and Henry show, no

defensive points scored as 1 goal was conceded in each game.

Aston Villa – Birmingham (h) Man U (h) Southampton (a) back to back

5-2 victories to end January and start February then returning to

the usual rubbish, presumably they’ll have a bit of fight in the two

home matches and then roll over and die at St Marys. Another good

month for Barry and Dublin, virtually nothing elsewhere.

Birmingham – Aston Villa (a) Man City (a) West Brom (h) a couple of

big derby games that could well make a big difference to Premiership

survival. Big minus points from the defence, Lazaridis, Clemence and

Morrison the only positive points scorers in the squad.

Blackburn – Man C (h) Arsenal (h) Newcastle (a) it looks as if some

of the backs to the wall defending that was successful at Stamford

Bridge is going to be needed in all three of these matches but

they’re up against more clinical finishers in these, still got

double Blackburn defenders? Oh dear! A lot of players used,

especially in defence during the month, did you have those that

conceded 5 or kept the clean sheet? Dunn’s goal and assist makes him

their top scorer for the month.

Bolton – Liverpool (a) Sunderland (a) Spurs (h) looking a very tidy

team during January and very capable of taking something from all of

these matches to extend the gap to the bottom 3. a positive /

negative mix at the back, Djorkaeff was top scorer with 3 goals.

Charlton – Arsenal (a) Newcastle (h) Middlesbrough (a) again the

form team in the league with 5 straight wins, this month couldn’t be

much more difficult against 2 of the title contenders and the team

that had to buy a new defender to show them where the goal was. A

brilliant season so far and no reason to believe that they will do

anything less than give their all for the remainder of it, they

won’t be looking for draws in these, they’ll be trying to win them!

They should be a decent price on the fixed odds for all of these

too. Good defensive points throughout, a couple of assists from

midfield and all 5(!) forwards got something.

Chelsea – Newcastle (a) West Brom (a) Man C (h) a poor 2003 so far

and the season is in danger of stuttering to a halt this month, will

the players be really pushing at St James Park or will they be

thinking of the FA Cup tie at Highbury the following weekend? These

two matches now define Chelsea’s season and West Brom are well

placed to take the points regardless against an either over

confident or dejected squad. Only Hasselbaink, Zola and Gudjohnsen

made worthwhile contributions in February.

Everton – Middlesbrough (a) West Ham (h) Arsenal (a) the 2 home wins

have kept the Euro challenge in good order, recent away form has not

brought many points but the losses have been by the odd goal. Only a

fan would expect anything from the Highbury trip so wins must be

gained against a couple of teams that will have gained in confidence

from their wins last week, potentially a very difficult month.

Points throughout the squad in February with Radzinski being the

main man.

Fulham – Sunderland (h) Southampton (h) Man U (a) 1W 1D 1L in

February, 3 wins from 3 home matches in 2003. 2 more home wins on

the cards? Again points shared around the squad with Malbranque

having a very good month.

Leeds – Man U (a) Middlesbrough (h) Liverpool (a) Seth Johnson

scored their one goal in February, will they get another this month?

Doesn’t look too promising does it? 11 points clear of the drop zone

so probably safe, will all thoughts be on the cup match?

Liverpool – Bolton (h) Spurs (a) Leeds (h) once upon a time you’d

have these down as formalities but not now! 1W 1D 1L from February,

1W 2D 1L in January, home form is equally as poor as the away form,

can it improve? Positive points throughout but certainly not VFM.

Man C – Blackburn (a) Birmingham (h) Chelsea (a) not a good month,

lost at home to West Brom, held Man U away then destroyed by Arsenal

at home, will Dunne keep his place in the team? The Anelka / Fowler

partnership hasn’t fired yet but it does look very potent and could

click at any time and even if it does will the defence let them down

again? Another with big negative points at the back and one score

for a handful of other players.

Man U – Leeds (h) Aston Villa (a) Fulham (h) very impressive in

Europe and they star the month with the chance to add to the trophy

cabinet, 3 wins are needed to keep the pressure on Arsenal, do any

of these 3 look capable of stopping them? Or for that matter scoring

against them?? Another with points scored throughout, Van

Nistelrooy’s 3 goals making him the top points scorer again.

Middlesbrough – Everton (h) Newcastle (h) Leeds (a) Charlton (h)

Unbeaten in February! Okay they only played 2 games but a dramatic

improvement on January. It took buying a new defender to find the

goals again, Riggott and Christie have made an instant impact and 3

or 4 wins from these games would be no surprise.

Newcastle – Chelsea (h) Middlesbrough (a) Charlton (a) Blackburn (h)

still going along very nicely, looking almost assured of CL football

next season and still with title aspirations, conceding very few as

they go. All 4 of these matches look very competitive with Charlton

looking to be the most difficult. The title challenge may slip a bit

but 3rd spot should be consolidated. Points everywhere but no

outstanding scorer from the 2 matches played.

Southampton – West Brom (h) Fulham (a) Aston Villa (h) 3 out of 3

lost in February which has brought the European dreams to an abrupt

halt, still in the cup though and they’ll fancy making it to the

semis but perhaps the league form will continue to suffer whilst

they remain in it. Beattie scored their only goal.

Sunderland – Fulham (a) Bolton (h) West Ham (a) 3 beatings in

February, they did score in each match but conceded a total of 10. A

couple of 6 pointers here that they must win to have any chance at

all of surviving, another 3 hammerings are more likely. Phillips got

all 3 goals.

Spurs – West Ham (a) Liverpool (h) Bolton (a) not particularly

inspiring recent form with a couple of one alls and the not too

difficult win over Sunderland. The points scored early in the season

have kept them in touch with the Euro qualifiers but a run of wins

are needed to move into a better position. 3 very competitive

fixtures with all opponents desperately needing points too, the

possibility of a few more cards being shown this month? A goal

conceded in every game so no defensive points, Sheringham and

Anderton the main scorers.

West Brom – Southampton (a) Chelsea (h) Birmingham (a) another with

1W 1D 1L in February, certainly not enough to survive, wins are

needed now, can they get them? Southampton and Chelsea may well be

distracted by the cup and the derby match could be anything. Might

be worth considering on the fixed odds at healthy prices. Generally

negative points at the back with the goals and assists shared

equally throughout the squad.

West Ham – Spurs (h) Everton (a) Sunderland (h) they’ve been thrown

a lifeline, can they grab it? Capable of getting 5 or 6 points this

month but have the management team shot themselves in the foot by

upsetting Di Canio at this crucial stage of the season? One of their

least poor months defensively but still negative points, Sinclair’s

2 goals easily makes him top points scorer.

The Andy Luckhurst Horseracing Tipster Corner

I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip for FISO members. I'll

give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. Today's report:

Apart from New Field most of our ante post bets seem to be going the

right way. Was thinking about a Grand National tip, but have decided

to wait till after Cheltenham. I offer a minimum recommendation that

I am confident will be well backed in the next few weeks. I am

looking at the Lincoln - the first big handicap of the flat season.

I've personally backed Adiemus @ 16/1 (now 8/1) and Golden Chalice

@25/1 (now 20/1). I feel that there is still some value in the 20/1

e/w Golden Chalice who has been well backed recently, as I type the

20/1 is still available at Corals, Ladbrokes and handlers.
