Sun DreamTeam Fantasy World Cup Cricket CRICKET'S biggest-ever event, the 2003 World Cup, gets under way in South Africa on Sunday 9th February. Fourteen nations . . . 54 games over 43 days . . . but only ONE way to win a fortune! So put the misery of England's ashes tour behind you and join in the fun of The Sun's £50,000 Cricket Dream Team. As with all The Sun's fantasy games, our Cricket Dream Team rules are simple. You just select a team of 11 players from a list of 110 they've chosen. They score points for you based on the amount of runs they score, wickets they take and stumpings, catches and run-outs they bag during the tournament. And you don't need to be a member of the Barmy Army to enter. The brilliant Cricket Dream Team website (at http://www.cricketdreamteam.com) provides in-depth details on 110 players, so it couldn't be EASIER. You simply select one player from the 11 groups of 10 so you have four batsmen, two all-rounders, a wicketkeeper and four bowlers. It really is a doddle - just make sure you don't choose more than two players from any one country! And if your team is not performing like potential World Cup winners, you can dump up to THREE of your duds during the mid-game Transfer Window and bring in replacements for the crucial closing stages. The overall winner of Cricket World Cup Dream Team walks off with an amazing £25,000 first prize! But there's MORE. Once you've selected 11 brave men to pin your hopes on, you get to choose which of the 14 participating nations you wish to associate your team with. Your line-up will then be automatically entered into that country's league - so you take on everyone else who chooses that nation. At the end of the game the top scoring team in each of the 14 Country Leagues wins £500. If that's not enough, you can also be in with a shout of a share of a further £1,500 by challenging your mates to enter a Mini League. And we've even got a mid-game prize of £1,000 up for grabs. It costs just £5 to enter. And if you make five entries in one go, you ONLY PAY FOR FOUR! Closing date for entries is 12 noon GMT on Sunday February 9 2003. Enter the Sun's DreamTeam game here. David Tonkin's February Premiership Review - on 30 Jan 2003 February starts with us half way through the 2nd OFL knockout round, who will those precious transfers be used on this month? Who will be the core selections for the various MotM competitions? A short month, perhaps some not so obvious selections are worth a shot? Several new players to contend with, someone will start life at their new club with a bang, but who? The title race looks a touch more open with Newcastle looking to be strong contenders, especially as they are attempting to strengthen their squad even more. Villa in 12th are just 7 points off a Euro spot, there are many teams still (mathematically at least) with a lot to play for. Any 3 from 4 to go down? West ham’s first home win of the season lifts them off the bottom, the next one will probably lift them out of the relegation zone, if they get another one that is J (FF points references are for OFL / Times / BBC / William Hill allocation) Arsenal – Fulham (h) Newcastle (a) Man City (a) not quite runaway leaders with a couple of tricky looking away fixtures that will surely test their defence, could be third by the end of the month. Henry and Pires have had an excellent January, not many FF points from other players. Aston Villa – Blackburn (h) Fulham (a) Charlton (a) 4th worst scoring record before the last match where they more than doubled their away goals for tally but one of the best defensively. Are they starting a roll that could lead to a Euro challenge or did Middlesbrough just have one of “those” days? FF points came from the defence and forwards in January, very few from midfield all season. Birmingham – Bolton (a) Man U (h) Chelsea (h) Liverpool (h) an extra match and 3 of the fixtures are at home, shame about the opponents! Half a new team has been bought during the transfer window, the wrong half perhaps? Another 4 losses and they will be in the bottom 4 in all probability. Little or negative points return from this lot. Blackburn – Aston Villa (a) Southampton (h) Chelsea (a) very unconvincing in recent weeks, a lot of draws and rightly mid-table. Have they settled for a mediocre season already? A win, a draw and a loss would be typical. January points were scored from all areas, not many, but most players have contributed. Bolton – Birmingham (h) West Brom (a) Man U (h) a couple of 6 pointers here that could lift them out of the bottom 4 or effectively bury their season. Nothing from the strikers in January, perhaps Ballesta can get the goals they need? Charlton – Sunderland (a) Everton (h) Aston Villa (h) looking safe in mid-table, will they fight for the points against teams that need them more? Another club that has shared the points throughout the squad unless you had the wrong couple of defenders. Chelsea – Spurs (h) Birmingham (a) Blackburn (h) 3 wins are must to hold onto the CL spot and retain an outside shot at the title. One loss could jeopardize even a UEFA spot. Showing good fighting spirit when behind but surely it’s better to not go behind in the first place? January was as expected a tough month where most defenders have a negative score, decent points from midfield and upfront. Everton – Leeds (h) Charlton (a) Southampton (h) A similar situation to Chelsea, 3 must win fixtures. Nothing from the midfield in January (not much from the season as a whole for that matter), defensive points were a mix between negative and good positive depending on if you picked those that had a hand in the 9 goals scored or just those that conceded the 8, McBride has taken his chances upfront, will he keep his place when Campbell and Rooney return? Fulham – Arsenal (a) Aston Villa (h) West Brom (h) Spurs (a) looked to have tightened up at the back until the latest game, still very little coming from the strikers and as a result risking being dragged into the relegation fight. Home points are essential, anything from the away matches must be viewed as an unlikely bonus at the moment. Leeds – Everton (a) West Ham (h) Newcastle (h) one of this season’s underachievers, at least they won’t be selling anybody else until the summer, are those that are left good enough or for that matter, in the right minds, to fight for the points against teams with something to play for? A couple of clean sheets gave the defenders positive points in January, only Kewell and Viduka made contributions worth mentioning in front of them. Liverpool – West Ham (a) Middlesbrough (h) Birmingham (a) struggling to qualify for Europe, they need to take 9 points but do they have it in them to roll their sleeves up and do it? A few points for defenders and up front but nothing worthwhile from midfield at all. Man C – West Brom (h) Man U (a) Arsenal (h) quite capable of upsetting both title front runners and we all know that they will certainly be trying in the Manchester derby. The on, off and now completed signing of Fowler to partner Anelka could easily take most defences apart, several times! Negative defensive points but plenty shared around in midfield and attack. Man U – Southampton (a) Birmingham (a) Man City (h) Bolton (a) even though 3 of the 4 are away and the home match will be highly competitive I’d expect their players will be prominent in many entries (except for those of us that have had to transfer them out to progress in OFL) Most of the players scored something during January with only Beckham and Scholes managing more than just one goal or assist. Middlesbrough – Newcastle (h) Liverpool (a) Sunderland (a) missing most of their first choice defence in their first home defeat of the season, can’t score away. A run of 8 or 9 wins could give them a shot at Europe but unless the defence is organised quickly and someone found to score up front 8 or 9 losses and a potential relegation struggle is more likely. Lots of minus points at the back but the midfield and forwards have almost compensated, almost but not quite. Newcastle – Middlesbrough (a) Arsenal (h) Leeds (a) another club that must win all 3, but in their case not just to hold a CL spot but also to keep any title aspirations going. A win against Arsenal would also please Man U and Chelsea. Chelsea and Everton both look good to gain some ground on them. Big points from keeper, defenders, Jenas and Bellamy during the month. Southampton – Man U (h) Blackburn (a) Everton (a) with the unbeaten home record gone perhaps some of their resolve has gone with it? Although currently Euro hopefuls and just 5 points off a CL place surely Beattie’s goals can’t carry them that much longer? Decent points from the defence, little from midfield, Beattie is still on a hot streak. Sunderland – Charlton (h) Spurs (a) Middlesbrough (h) home points are essential and should be there for the taking against sides with nothing really to play for, but until they work out how to stop conceding and put a few in at the other end another 3 losses would be no surprise. Perhaps surprisingly most of the defenders have a positive point (“a” as in 1 J) Kilbane’s goal made him their highest scorer for the month with 3. Spurs – Chelsea (a) Sunderland (h) Fulham (h) points are needed to maintain a challenge for a Euro berth. If Keane’s injury keeps him out for a while goals might be difficult to come by, but even so the 2 home matches are must win. Points were spread around the team with Keane’s hatrick making him the only individual of much interest. West Brom – Man City (a) Bolton (h) Fulham (a) West Ham (h) 4 games, 4 losses? The one clean sheet gave most defenders a point or 2, Koumas was the only scorer in front of them. Not losing by much but still losing most games. West Ham – Liverpool (h) Leeds (a) West Brom (a) many very talented players, unfortunately none of them are defenders! Finally the first home win has been achieved can Di Canio lift them even further? Big minus points at the back, not too bad in midfield and upfront. David Tonkin - 30 January 2003. Comment on David's review on this forum thread. New Fantasy Football Games We've recently received information from the webmasters of the following games: Strikerama is the new monthly game from Fantasy League. The game is simply about goals. All you have to do is pick five strikers to accumulate points for each Premiership and FA Cup goal they score in February. You must also assign weightings to your strikers - this will decide how much they will collect for every goal, from 5 points down to 1. The deadline for the first game is 14:45 on Saturday, 1 February. Unlimited changes can be made up to this time. Once the competition is under way, only one transfer is permitted each week. There is no restriction, however, on the number of weight changes. The entry fee is £5 per team, and there's a prize of £1,000 for the top scoring entrant. The two runners-up collect £200 and £50. A mini-league for FISO members has attracted more than 25 managers already and others are welcome to join. Click here for details. The next full game starts on Sat 1 March 2003. Full league fixtures, cup competitions (FA, European, Football league trophy) including replays, promotion/relegation, playoffs, detailed player skills, player history, club history, stadium development, transfer market & news, youth teams, coaches, injuries & suspensions and detailed match summaries. The match engine takes into consideration all of the individual player skills, tactics, formation, attacking style and tackling style to produce a realistic result - managers decisions have a great impact on the outcome. An advanced A.I. ensures that computer controlled teams (those that have not yet been taken over by a human player) offer players a genuine challenge. They get involved in all aspects of the game much as a human player would - including buying great players or promising youths from the transfer market, selling unwanted players and picking & training their squad. Click here to access the forum thread on Real Manager A free to play brand new game (based on real-life results) and a summary of the rules is as follows: Every week you will be given a fixture against another Ultimate Soccer Manager. The objective is to beat them and steer your side to the top of the league. For each match you will have the opportunity to select your starting 11 and 5 substitutes. Their performances will determine just how well your side gets on. Every player receives a rating from one of our correspondents at the grounds. If they play well or badly, score, get a yellow or red card, are the star player for their side, keep a clean sheet (goalkeepers) or miss a penalty, they accumulate points or have points deducted from their overall rating. These ratings then convert into Ultimate points and Ultimate points convert into Ultimate goals (see the scoring scale in Points Scoring & Goals). These Ultimate goals will determine the result of the game - it's a straight head to head. The manager with the most goals wins, if the scores are level then it's a draw. The results are then used to compile the Ultimate Soccer league table. Your plight as a manager and your position in the league will depend upon how well you select your Ultimate team on a weekly basis.' Note: It appears that you have to register with Globedate.com to play - so perhaps only one for the single people out there! 442league is a football simulation game. You build up your team and take on other people across the globe. There are so far only a few leagues but we are expanding as you read this. It's good fun and free. Soon there will be prizes given out at the end of the season Freekick is currently under development and the developers would be more then happy to receive any feedback on their work. Freekick is a multiplayer-management-game online. As manager over a newly founded soccer club you will make all the vital decisions about training, line-up and long-term strategy. I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. Today's report: We continue to make a level stake profit and hold some decent ante post vouchers. Firstly a few observations, and finally two tips. Cheltenham will soon be upon us and as far as the Gold Cup goes it is usually won by an improver these days and Beef Or Salmon is the right type, however it looks a strong race this year so I haven't had a bet. In the Champion the horse I've backed at double his current odds is Rooster Booster and I think that he and Intersky Falcon (almost backable at 11/2 I'd suggest) are much better than the rest. The one horse I'm interested in backing is Coolnagorna in the long distance novice but will hold fire. This weekend in the Tote Gold Trophy the ones I like are Non So (did us a favour last time @ 10/1), Chauvinist and Tikram. I've backed the first two each way, but wouldn't recommend them at current odds. Two tips then. I'd recommend Soviet Song for the 1,000 Guineas @ 5/1 - she has arguably the best form, is a mile to 1 1/4 mile type and is well forward in her work - I'd hope she will be no more than 5/2 if she goes their without a prep run. Refuse to Bend @ 25/1 - recently backed for the 2, 000 Guineas I'd expect his ideal trip to be about 1m 2 1/2 f so the 25/1 with runs on the board looks fair value for the Derby - he's by Sadler's Wells out of a Gulch mare so should get the 1 1/2m trip ok.
