1. The Sun Dream Team King of the Punters

The Sun's simple to play horseracing tipping competition, King of the Punters, has been web-enabled this year and starts this Saturday 18th January - with a noon entry deadline.

There is £50,000 of prize money on offer - just pick 6 horses (no transfers) from the 220 listed - and sit back and relax (or not if your 6 are winning all the races in which case you may be in line for the £30,000 1st prize!). Entry fee is £5 of £20 for 5 teams.

The Game is only open to those aged 18 years or over at the time of registration and is open to any eligible person residing in a country where the Game is not prohibited or otherwise unlawful.

FISO have a whole host of tips for you on the forum - just click here:

http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/philboard_read.asp?id=2161

There is also a FISO mini-league which is FREE to join. Once you have entered your team, on the "My Entry" page, click on the 'Join Mini League' link. You will then be prompted to enter the league name and password to the Mini League - these are:

League Name: FANTASY@FISO.co.uk

Password: FISO

There is £1,500 of prizes on offer from King of the Punters for the top 2 mini-leagues. Any prize money won by the FISO mini-league will be split equally between the top 5 in the mini-league i.e. £200 or £100 each depending whether we finish 1st or 2nd.

2. Fantasy Factory - multiple sports enjoyment (review by Sam David)

This factory looks like the place to clock in to for a variety of sporting competitions.  Most games are free to enter, but pay-to-play competitions are run to raise funds for worthy causes.  The main promise is plenty of fun for everyone.

Participants can:

- win prizes by forecasting the outcome of popular sports events

- choose from contests such as Football's Premiership, Champions League and Worthington Cup, Cricket Tests, Formula 1, Rugby Union Premiership & European Cup, Tennis and Golf, Horse Racing, the Superbowl and even the Music charts

- view results and standings online soon after a day’s play is completed

- set up a mini-league to play against friends and colleagues

- enter one of the Free Games, or help raise cash for worthy causes by paying for a Big Prize Challenge

Free Games

These usually span a weekend, but can range to a calendar month or more (the free to play Cricket World Cup promises 54 fixtures over two months).

As an example, the next Free Weekly Football Game involves eight matches on Sat-Sun 18-19 January.   Entrants need to predict which club will accumulate the most fantasy points.

A team will earn 100 points for winning its match, and gain/lose points for scoring/conceding goals.  Every goal is worth 25 points, plus one point for each minute into the match it is scored.  Each goal conceded costs a team one point.  The final total is based on the club's fantasy points multiplied by the contestant’s predicted rating of the team.  Points can also be gained by correctly answering the bonus question that is mailed to entrants during the action.  The email also helps entrants to gauge where they stand in the game.

The deadline for this week’s contest is 11am on Saturday.  Entrants simply need to predict which of the following clubs will achieve the highest fantasy total, continuing down to the 16th and least-rated team:

Man Utd v Chelsea , Premiership, Saturday

Newcastle v Man City , Premiership, Saturday

Southampton v Liverpool , Premiership, Saturday

Perugia v Inter Milan , Italian Serie A, Sunday

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid , Spanish Primera Liga, Sunday

Real Sociedad v Celta Vigo, Spanish Primera Liga, Sunday

Arsenal v West Ham, Premiership, Sunday

Fulham v Middlesbrough , Premiership, Sunday

Contestants do not need to get the final positions exactly right to succeed.  The top three players will win FF prize credits which they can exchange for gifts or save to collect bigger awards

Big Prize Challenge

The next Big Prize Challenge covers Rugby Union's Six Nations. This starts when Italy play Wales on February 15 and ends when Ireland meet England on March 30.  The skill lies in forecasting how well each country will perform.

Throughout the 7-week competition, entrants will earn fantasy points based on:

the result of each of the 15 fixtures

tries, conversions, drop kicks or penalties scored

predictions to simple and topical rugby bonus questions

league positions in the championship table.

Final totals are based on a country's fantasy points multiplied by the contestant’s rating of the national team.

The person with the highest points tally will win a digital camera, a rugger shirt and 100 FF credits.  For each fully paid entry of five pounds (£5), Fantasy Factory will donate £2 to the worthy cause chosen by the game winner.

Summary

- Games cover a variety of sports, with new events every week

- The free contests offer prize credits

- The pay-to-play events provide bigger prizes and benefit good causes

- Competitors can boost their viewing experience of live sport

- Results and standings are published efficiently and speedily

- The website appears to be sturdy and is easy to navigate

- The gamesmaster is extremely responsive to queries and feedback

- FF’s stated aim is to run games to entertain their players

3.  Fantasy World Cup Cricket games

A. TELEGRAPH FANTASY CRICKET WORLD CUP (reviewed by Sam David)

There's £5,000 and a Caribbean holiday to be won in the Telegraph Fantasy Cricket World Cup.  To be in with a chance, select a team from the 14 competing countries and watch them score points for you with their performances in the 54 matches of the World Cup.  The first fixture is on Sunday 9 February.

Look out for details in The Daily Telegraph and online at www.fantasycricket.telegraph.co.uk from Saturday 18 January.

Subscribers to Wisden Monthly (the February edition was published on 16 Jan) have been able to review the rules and player lists beforehand.  These are summarised as follows:

Pick 11 players - 5 batsmen, 1 keeper, 1 all-rounder and 4 bowlers - from the list of 140 world cricketers.  Every player has a rating between 1 and 9 (1 is best).  The total combined rating of your team for the group stages should be 41 or more.  You can select a maximum of six from any one country, and make ten transfers during the tournament.

From the start of the Super Six stage on Wednesday 5 March, and through to the final on Sunday 23 March, the total combined rating of the team can be reduced from 41 to 25 or more.

Players can earn or lose points based on their runs, wickets, catches, stumpings and match appearances.

Each entry costs five pounds (£5).  Postal applications (e.g. the form in Wisden Monthly) must arrive by first post on Saturday 8 February.  For other entry options, please check the Telegraph.

You can also set up a Super League of five or more teams with friends and colleagues - so look out for the FISO Super League in due course.

For full details of the competition, see the newspaper or website this Saturday.

4. Fantasy Shares: Observer - £25,000 in prizes (reviewed by Sam David)

The Money Observer is offering everybody one free online entry to their 'Investor of the Year' contest.  Further entries, if required, can be made via a Premium Rate phone call.  So if you've ever fancied being a top fund manager, wheeling and dealing in the stock market, now you can.

All you have to do is pick shares that you believe will be 2003's best performers.  A tricky task, perhaps, but at least you won't lose your job if you fail.  There are lots of prizes to be won, including 10 sets of five monthly prizes and a grand end-of-year prize pot, worth a combined £25,000.

Select five shares from the 30 companies listed that you believe will show the greatest percentage rise in share price in 2003 between 1 January and 31 December.  Your selection will qualify for the monthly and premier prizes.

Predict how many of the 30 shares will be showing a gain in value by the end of the year.  This will be used as a tiebreaker.

You can only make one entry via the Money Observer website:

          www.moneyobserver.com

If you wish to enter again, simply ring the Registration Hotline on 0906 470 9239 and follow the prompts to leave your entry details & contact information. (60p per minute, BT Premium Rate).  You can make as many telephone entries as you like.

8. New fantasy sports game reviews.

FootballMatch

Footballmatch is an online football management simulation based on fantasy football rules. It is currently being developed and tested live and its unique features include:

·  a player driven economy,

·  player driven transfers,

·  speculation via bets on real life games,

·  shorter seasons resulting in more intense environment,

·  promotions and relegations,

·  team income and wage bills.

·  a real time transfer market in the game (so when someone sells a player from their squad, the player is on the transfer market for 3 days where the highest bidder after 3 days gets the player. This should add to the involvement of members and also create an in game economy where the players govern how much the players are worth).

The game is currently in testing phase with Round 2 Team Selection deadline on Sat 18 January 13:00 and the developers would welcome and appreciate any managers that come and help fine tune Footballmatch.net. More discussion and feedback on this game can be found here: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/philboard_read.asp?id=2238

Footballbrain

The game allows you to predict the outcome of matches from the English, Scottish or Italian leagues. The main game is free to play but if you wish you can compete for cash in the weekly or monthly 'Prize Leagues'.

In addition to competing against every other user you can also set up your own mini league and compete directly against an unlimited number of friends/work colleagues.

A supporter's league and message board also provide a community feel. Footballbrain claim to have over 4000 registered players.

Fantasy Golf Presidents Cup

Here's an Australian based fantasy golf game which is combined with a competition against an American based fantasy golf game for the Fantasy Presidents Cup:

A predictions league where there will be 10 teams in the league. A team consists of 8 PGA players drafted by the team captain. Draft order is determined by "luck of the draw" and is serpentined. The league will run from Jan. 16th (Bob Hope) through Aug. 25th (NEC Invitational & the Reno-Tahoe Open). All players are returned to the draft each year.

THE SCORING.
Weekly points will be awarded for PGA players as follows:

1st place 20 points
2nd place 15 points
3rd place 10 points
Top 10    6 points
Top 25    3 points
Made cut   1 point
Last place  (-3) points (after the cut)

The 4 major tournaments will award double points for all places (Masters, US Open, British Open & PGA Championship).

THE MONEY.
The final cash payout will be as follows:

1st place $225.00
2nd place $150.00
3rd place $100.00
4th place   $75.00
5th place   $50.00

TRANSACTIONS.
Transactions may be made each Tuesday through Thursday before 1 P.M. There are 2 types of transactions:

The "Waiver Wire" - You may drop a player from your roster, and pick up an available player who is not on a roster.  You must make a bid for the desired player, and the highest bidder will be awarded that player. The minimum bid is $3.00.

Trading - You may negotiate a trade with any other team. The number of players or draft picks is not limited, but must be player for player, draft pick for draft pick. Cost is $3.00 per player/draft pick, per team.  The deadline for trading is August 1st.

THE PARTY.
All funds collected throughout the season will go towards the "End of the Year Gala Event". The Australian Team then pairs off against a team of Americans playing the exact same game for a Fantasy Presidents Cup. Each side brings 10 "teams" to the match, and the competition takes place during the entire 32 week Fantasy season.  The first 16 weeks are played as the "1st Round", or 1st set of matches.  Each weekly PGA Tour event is treated as 1 hole played, with the total weekly score for each team going against their opponent's total weekly score. Scoring is standard Match Play throughout the competition. Each match is worth 1 point, with ties awarding 1/2 point to each side. The first round will be worth 10 total points.

After the first round is complete, the Captain of the team that is losing will assign the matches for the "2nd round", or the last 16 weeks of the Fantasy season. A total of 10 points are available in this second round, making the total available points for the competition 20. Team USA will need only 10 total points to retain the cherished Cup, while Team Australia will need a minimum of 10 1/2 points to bring the Cup down-under. While the Cup competition is played primarily for fun and pride, the losing team is required to send a "Champion's Box" to the winners.

9. The Andy Luckhurst Horseracing Corner.

I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip for FISO members. I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. You can catch more of my tips on the Beat The Bookies part of the FISO forum. Today's report:

King of the Punters is upon us so besides a tip or two I'll give a few mentions. Firstly two Cheltenham tips. Champion Chase, Moscow Flyer 7/2 , I've taken 9/2 but this race rarely produces shocks and he showed no ill effects of his previous fall when winning last time. He won the Arkle last year and if he is right on the day must have a great chance in a race that rarely produces shocks. Stayers Hurdle, Baracouda 3/1 won the race last year, looks the one to beat, but a big price due to doubts over the jockey, but they won last year - another race that doesn't produce too many shocks and over a trip few genuinely get.
Check http://www.oddschecker.co.uk for the latest prices, I'd back Moscow Flyer now and wait for the general 3/1 Baracouda to start to disappear before jumping in. Chris wanted a tip for tomorrow so Non So in the Lanzarote at Kempton, I've taken 10/1 with the Tote. He could just be an improver who won over course and distance last time.

I'll give a few mentions now for the Sun comp. Fondmort will have a chance tomorrow and if he doesn't cut it I reckon they'll find a few nice targets - maybe the Cathcart. Hussard Collonges is a real stayer and may be capable of beating the best when the emphasis is on jumping and stamina - runs tomorrow. I fancy Chauvanist to beat Puntal tomorrow and he would be an interesting bet if they then decide to run him in the Tote Gold Trophy. Tony Martin's David's Lad would be my idea of the National winner, but there is no rush to back him just yet. Looking further ahead I see my previous 2000 Guineas tip Statue of Liberty has been significantly nibbled at and I strongly urge anyone who missed the 16/1 to take the 14/1 that is still on offer.

Good Luck.
Andy.
