1. FA Cup Games starting Saturday 4 January 2003

Telegraph Fantasy Football Online (TFFO)

TFFO's FA Cup game starts this Saturday 4th January 2003 at 12:30 (enter your team now and you have unlimited transfers until midnight Friday). Choose 18 strikers or midfielders from 18 ranked groups from the 3rd round of the FA Cup and see how they fare through to the Final. 12 transfers are allowed and you can choose more than one striker from each club. The first prize is £2,000 and there are runners-up prizes of £1,250 and £750 for second and third places. The entry fee is £3.

Each goal scored by one of your strikers earns you points and these increase with every round they progress. And the lower the division, the more points a striker earns you per goal. A striker from the lowest group can score up to 10 times more points for a goal than a striker from the top group. Choose a star player for each round and his points are doubled. So find that 'low group' on-form striker whose team progresses through to the latter stages of the FA Cup and you could be on to a winner!

Managers may earn additional points for their teams by answering quiz questions. The questions will be available to answer at the start of each round commencing from the onset of the fourth round. These questions will be a mixture of historic and prediction. 5 points will be awarded for each correct answer.

Five new questions will appear on the site five days before the start of each round. Managers will have until the first kick off of that round to lodge their answers. Once the quiz page has been activated, managers will have a total of 5 minutes to submit their answers to that round's questions. Managers will only be given one opportunity to answer any round's questions. The answers to the previous round's questions will be revealed on the first score update after each round. The first quiz will appear on Monday 20/01/03 and the final quiz will appear on Monday 12/05/03.

FORS FA Cup Game

The "64" qualifiers for the third round have been broken down in to 8 pools of 8 teams, you pick one team form each pool to form your Super 8. One of these teams is your joker team, this score is multiplied by a multiple dependent on which pool they came from. The team winning the FA Cup scores you 120 points, losing Finalists 80 Points, losing semi 60 Points, down to losing third round team scoring -10 points. When the replays have finished then the form will be updated to reflect the qualifying team but as this would not affect their pool position the game is open to entries now.

In common with the other FORS Games there is a goal scorers section, questions section and Total goals. As usual there is a mini-league facility which is free to participants. The nature of the competition means that this is a one off entry to last the duration of the cup.

Entry fee is £5 with £4 going to the prize fund and £1 (less any card fees) to FORS Friends of Roxwell School a Registered charity. World Pay are used or Payments processing.

2. Telegraph Statistics (TFF & TFFO) and the low-down on Southampton.

Sorted for you in 'Value For Money' order are the top 20+ TFFO Strikers, Midfielders, Full-Backs, Centre-Backs and Goalkeepers as at 2 January 2003:

The low-down on surprise package Southampton:

Like our previous reviews of Middlesbrough and Everton, many of the Southampton players may represent great value for money in TFF/TFFO (and other Fantasy Football games), so we've taken an in depth look at their very settled 1st team squad.

·  Goalkeeper - Niemi - reserve Jones

·  Right Back - Dodd (injured) - reserve Telfer

·  Centre-Backs - M. Svensson and Lundekvarm - reserve Williams

·  Left Back - Bridge (free-kicks) - no need for a reserve!

·  Left midfield - Marsden - reserve Andres Svensson (free-kicks)

·  Centre midfield - Delap & Oakley - reserve Andres Svensson (free-kicks)

·  Right midfield - Fernandes (free-kicks and corners) - reserve Telfer

·  Centre Forwards - Beattie ( free-kicks & penalties) & Ormerod - reserve Tessam, Pahars, K Davies & Delgado

3.  January Premiership Preview by David Tonkin on 28 December 2002

Another month is upon us! With the Premiership just past the half way mark we have some good pointers to form (or lack of it). The race for the title looks to be between Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea (if you fancy anyone else get down to the bookies!) with currently Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs as the main challengers for the remaining European spots. At the bottom West Ham, West Brom, Sunderland and Bolton are clearly in the most danger but a bad run from anyone even as high as Middlesbrough currently in 10th and it won’t take long to slide towards the drop zone (and of course it’ll need a couple of the named teams to greatly improve their results too).

January sees the opening of the transfer window with the possibility of some big names switching clubs or even leaving the Premiership and there’ll be a few new names that will be hoped to be key signings for those challenging for Europe or trying to avoid relegation. TFFO’s extra 3 transfers may be best held onto until the window is closed, a bit pointless to bring in a player a few days before he gets sold out of the Prem. Managers with transfers in hand should be at a big advantage when the OFL knockout stages get underway.

We’re also at that time of year when a few managers get the push by desperate chairmen, will they be trying to get new men in as the transfer window opens?

Newcastle v Bolton on the 22nd is a provisional date at the time of writing, presumably dependant on neither having a FA Cup replay to schedule and will be an important fixture for MotW attempts.

Arsenal – Chelsea (h) Birmingham (a) West Ham (h) Liverpool (a) potentially a difficult month with the home fixtures being derby matches, 3 or 4 draws wouldn’t be a surprise (but then, 3 or 4 wins wouldn’t be either!)

Aston Villa – Bolton (h) Liverpool (a) Spurs (h) Middlesbrough (a) still finding goals and points few and far between away from home, just 3 goals and 3 points so far with the home form just keeping them clear of trouble. My preseason tip for relegation and if the home points dry up for a few games that call won’t be far off.

Birmingham – Leeds (a) Arsenal (h) Blackburn (a) Man U (h) proving difficult to beat in mainly low scoring matches thus far but this looks to be a very difficult month for them but they’ll probably nick a point or two somehow.

Blackburn – Middlesbrough (h) Sunderland (a) Birmingham (h) West Ham (a) they win a few, draw a few and lose a few with most decisive results decided by the odd goal, any game could have any result.

Bolton – Aston Villa (a) Fulham (h) Charlton (a) [Newcastle (a)] Everton (h) odds on to go down and looking at later fixtures if they’re going to save themselves they need to keep the recent upturn going through this month. Expect a couple of decent signings (possibly on loan) during the next couple of weeks.

Charlton – West Ham (h) Chelsea (a) Bolton (h) West Brom (a) following their good run of results from mid-November many will fancy them against the 3 strugglers and possibly to repeat last seasons victory at Stamford Bridge too. Charlton players will probably influence many MotM attempts, whether their inclusion will contribute to successful attempts or be the cause of failure well, that’s the gamble isn’t it?

Chelsea – Arsenal (a) Charlton (h) Man U (a) Leeds (h) definitely the most difficult month remaining for them this season. Following 2 bad Xmas results title dreams have been dented, a poor month could easily see a slide down the table and out of the Euro spots. A good month, especially if it includes a win or 2 away from home should nail a CL place and make them live title contenders again (don’t hold your breath! J). Recent team selections have been interesting to say the least.

Everton – Man C (h) Spurs (a) Sunderland (h) Bolton (a) perhaps surprise challengers at the moment, not the most prolific scorers but they’ve won plenty of games to be up there. No doubt many will feel that a couple of their players will be essential in MotM attempts too, well their defenders anyway.

Fulham – West Brom (h) Bolton (a) Middlesbrough (h) Man C (a) very inconsistent so far this season, last season you’d have expected at least 3 clean sheets from these fixtures but now????

Leeds – Birmingham (h) Man C (a) West Brom (h) Chelsea (a) still very much a club in trouble, who will be leaving? Several players will almost certainly go but what about the manager? Capable of getting something from most if not all of these fixtures and pulling clear of the drop zone, recent form (10 points from their last 4 matches) says they will.

Liverpool – Newcastle (a) Aston Villa (h) Southampton (a) Arsenal (h) after a miserable November and December will fortunes improve? A couple of months ago you’d have fancied 4 wins but now 3 losses (and a 0-0 with Villa) seem more likely.

Man C – Everton (a) Leeds (h) Newcastle (a) Fulham (h) another inconsistent team, scoring in most games but losing as many as they win, they’ll get something from one or more of these games but whether the points will just be for FF managers or a few for Keegan too could be a different matter.

Man U – Sunderland (h) West Brom (a) Chelsea (h) Birmingham (a) well it looks straightforward enough doesn’t it? 3 “easy” wins where they shouldn’t break sweat and just the one “real” match. And they actually have a Saturday 3pm kick off this month! Has the return of Keane strengthened the team or disrupted a successful, balanced line-up? Recent results point to disruption. Will any there be any moves in the transfer market?

Middlesbrough – Blackburn (a) Southampton (h) Fulham (a) Aston Villa (h) if you’ve held onto your Middlesbrough defenders this long then you’ll be expecting them to start picking up a few defensive points again now.

Newcastle – Liverpool (h) West Ham (a) Man C (h) [Bolton (h)] Spurs (a) as ever strong going forward but not so strong defensively and it will be generally expected that they’ll outscore most of their opponents this month.

Southampton – Spurs (h) Middlesbrough (a) Liverpool (h) Sunderland (a) excellent home record, poor away although many of the loses have been by the odd goal. I can’t see them getting much out of the month, perhaps you’ll have different ideas?

Sunderland – Man U (a) Blackburn (h) Everton (a) Southampton (h) starting to score a few goals but not picking up many points, can they get anything out of this month?

Spurs – Southampton (a) Everton (h) Aston Villa (a) Newcastle (h) confidence should be high following a good December and another potentially good month here that could see them challenging for the CL positions again. Will a new striker be signed to partner Keane to help the cause?

West Brom – Fulham (a) Man U (h) Leeds (a) Charlton (h) heavy odds on to go down, they’ll certainly battle hard but will they get much for their efforts?

West Ham – Charlton (a) Newcastle (h) Arsenal (a) Blackburn (h) the team bottom at Xmas always goes down and with their abysmal home form they are certainly heading that way. Very little travelling for them this month with all their matches in London, perhaps they can travel a little way up the table as well? With just 5 draws from the 11 matches since their last win back in October can they find any improvement this month or even perhaps their first home win of the season?

8. The Andy Luckhurst Horseracing Corner.

I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip for FISO members. I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. You can catch more of my tips on the Beat The Bookies part of the FISO forum. Today's report:

No tip this time, but any Racing fans may find the following of interest. Following on from yesterday's successful gamble by Richard Fahey's yard (Mr Pertemps from 25/1 to 7/1) there are a few stables that you should respect big time when the money is down. The two that I have had information from that have been very successful in recent years are Tony Martin and Gary Moore. Martin now has some decent horses including David's Lad recently backed for the Grand National (perhaps prematurely) and has a very good strike rate when the money is down. Moore has taken over from the legendary Sutcliffe gambling yard, and whilst the quality of horse is not great he has certainly inherited the knack of landing a coup. I have not had the same level of info from Fahey's yard but it has long been known as a shrewd gambling yard. In the old days Paddy Murphy gave me some great results but the yard no longer has the same sort of firepower. If you are a Racing fan don't forget Tony Martin in particular when the money is down!

Andy.
