1. The Sun DreamTeam
- Transfer Window Cleaning!
The Sun Dream Team's first (of two) Transfer Windows opened on
Monday 7 October 2002 and closes at 11.59pm on Friday, October 18 giving you
the chance to clear out up to 3 players for a meagre £1.50. Here we highlight
one potential 'star' player from each team that may set your team alight for
the remainder of the season and show you a) the star man selections to date
and b) the new players available:
Player Tips:
Arsenal:
Ljungberg - should be back to match fitness now and over his
migraine problem; could well benefit from Wenger's attacking style even
without the red hairstyle.
Aston Villa:
Barry - seems to be benefiting from his new role in
left-midfield and listed as a defender in most comps; could carry the Villa to
respectability.
Birmingham City:
John - on scorching form over the past week but how long will
it continue? Steve Bruce has a solid (perhaps stern?) looking team so it may
be longer than many think.
Blackburn Rovers:
Duff - more star man votes than anyone else (and he has been
injured for a couple of weeks!), 'nuff said.
Bolton:
Djorkaeff - fantastique! Chelsea:
Lampard - to be frank he's got a deserved England call-up and
if Chelsea can find some form he will benefit.
Everton:
Yobo - suddenly Everton's defence looks as good as
Middlesbrough's (at least for 85 minutes of a match) and that's down in a big
way to Yobo and I'm sure The Sun reporters want to have fun with his name.
Fulham:
Malbranque - on the side-lines to begin with but now riding
high and Fulham are seen by many to do well this year.
Leeds United:
Fowler - risky I know when he's not yet back from injury but
boy they need someone to fire up that front line if Leeds are to be
cock-a-hoop come May.
Liverpool:
Owen - still not quite 100% confident with his shooting but on
his day wonderful enough to get his share of star man selections.
Manchester City:
Anelka - a lot is resting on his shoulders but will be an easy
choice to nick that star man selection should he deliver. If he doesn't then
avoid all Man City players!
Manchester United:
Scholes - proved his potential on Monday evening with 2 goals
from midfield. P.S. Will play as a support for Van Nistelrooy in many games.
Middlesbrough:
Geremi - another midfielder listed as a defender and benefiting
from McClaren's management style. Likely to sign permanently at the end of the
season - he's a gem currently on loan from Real Madrid.
Newcastle United:
Dyer - has been ploughing away in midfield for the Magpies
and should come good at some time this season once he learns from his shooting
lessons with Shearer.
Southampton:
Bridge - rarely scores but Strachan is encouraging the full
back to shoot more often and when it comes to it can put in great crosses. On
current form perhaps deserves the England left back spot ahead of Ash Cole.
Sunderland:
Phillips - still a week or two away from a return after injury
so on the risky side but Kev has been the star player in this team since they
were promoted to the Premier League. With Phillips at the helm, Howard
Wilkinson may show Sunderland the way up the table.
Tottenham Hotspur:
Keane (Robbie) - a quality player who scored his first goal for
the club at the weekend. More to follow Shirley?
West Bromwich Albion:
Roberts - personally I'd stay away from WBA with the rigors of
the season likely to start to take effect but if anyone will pull the star
vote then Jason's your man.
West Ham United:
Di Canio - well the Sun think he's Goodio so that's it, init?
New Sun Dream Team players available include:
And courtesy of The Sun Dream Team team, here are the 113
Star Man selections to date:
Whilst I won't be divulging the make-up of my team leading TFF with 418 points, I will give you a run-down on the top scoring players overall in each position. Sorted for you in 'Total Points Scored' order are the top Strikers, Midfielders, Defenders and Goalkeepers:
The low-down on Middlesbrough F.C. Next we take a look at in form Middlesbrough. Their players should represent value for money in TFF/TFFO with the Premiership Club performing well above pre-season expectations. Despite playing an attractive attacking 4-3-3 formation the 'Boro have been defensively sound and their defenders are not only benefiting from clean sheet points but are also involved in the goals scored (Note: Middlesbrough are averaging 1.5 goals per Premiership game). In Steve McClaren they have a Manager tipped for the future England job and his departure from Old Trafford in June 2001 is seen by many to have been a key factor in Manchester United's inability to hold on to the Premiership crown last season. A run down of their settled squad is as follows:
As many TFF managers will have noticed, the Cameroon International, Geremi is listed as a Defender (costing just £3.4m) (in TFFO Geremi is a full-back) despite playing on the right side of midfield. With an eye for goal and taking right hand sided corners and free-kicks, he is odds-on to be the most selected 'transfer in' during September/October. Has to be a 'must' buy for as long as M'bro stay injury free (no in depth squad here like Arsenal and Man Utd) and high on confidence. The left-back Queudrue rated at £3.6m will also be a popular choice due to his proven ability with free-kicks and his left-sided corners. The 1st choice goalkeeper, Schwarzer, at £3.1m represents great value for money and may allow funds to be made available to strengthen your forward line. Talking of forward line, Maccarone has found his feet in English football with incredible ease and does not look a flash in the pan. At £5.1m he will now be a popular choice to support the more expensive likes of Henry, Van Nistelrooy, Shearer and Owen. He will not however be able to support Middlesbrough by himself and will need Nemeth to continue his finishing form, or Boksic to rediscover his, for M'bro to hold their 3rd place. The next month's fixtures for Middlesbrough look difficult:
Next a reminder about the TFF Divisional Split on 4 November: As announced in the TFF Guide to the 2002/03 season, the TFF game will be split into separate divisions based on tiers of 50,000 teams within the game as at midnight Monday 4 November. This is to provide extra entertainment to those teams perhaps out of reach of the overall prizes. A snapshot is taken at that time. If you are outside the top 50,000 teams, you will be informed of your league position and points total, as well as the number of points you are behind the leader of the Division in which you will be competing. There is no extra prize
available for the top 50,000 teams (the so-called Premier League) but those in
the 1st Division (50,001 to 100,000), 2nd Div'n (100,001 to 150,000), 3rd Div'n
(150,001 to 200,000) and perhaps also 4th Div'n (200,001 to prob around 207,000,
although these teams may be included in the 3rd Division) each compete for an
extra £5,000 for the winner of each Division. More details are promised in
Wednesday's Telegraph nearer the date. Chelsea were knocked out of the UEFA Cup and therefore the teams that will still be playing at 1pm or 3pm on Sundays during a UEFA Cup week are Leeds, Blackburn and Fulham. Due to the 18 man squad system and star man selection, TFFO increases the need to have squad players that play on Sundays.
3. Weekend Football's £5,000 game - an advantage
to late entries?
It's very simple - you just need to correctly predict 3
results at the weekend and you could be on your way to £5,000! Entry to the
competition is FREE, and will run through the 2002/03 season. Many
August/September entrants are on NEGATIVE scores so late entrants have a
distinct advantage!
In summary:
The voting coupon contains the next 4 to 5 days football
fixtures (the weekend coupon is available every Thursday).
To vote, click on the icon next to a match and select a home
win, draw or away win in the window that pops up and add your comment. (The
radio buttons on the face of the coupon are for calculating returns not
voting)
To enter the competition, click on any 'voted' icon and a window will display all the matches you have voted on in this weekend coupon, you can then select up to 3 matches to submit to the competition. (You can change your competition selections any time up to 11am on Saturday).
Effectively you need to vote twice. Firstly (once the coupon
is up on Thursday), on the main coupon vote on at least 3 matches that take
place on Saturday or Sunday. Then click on one of the matches you have
already voted on (i.e. on the 'voted' button next to the match which is
highlighted in white, rather than original 'vote' in red) - this will bring
up the tipping competition box and then you select 3 of your tips for the £5k
weekend tipping competition. You need to select your 3 by 11am each
Saturday.

2. Average odds of correct predictions
When you click on a tipster profile, you can now see which
tipsters are predicting the tough games and which are going for the safe
bets as the average odds of their correct predictions is displayed.
3. Top 10 tipsters by team
You can now click on any team name in the coupon and display
the top 10 tipsters for that team. Click to display their details and you
can see their profile, including their predictions this weekend and last
weekend, and how many predictions they have got correct since they
registered.

'I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip for FISO members.
I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. You can catch more of
my tips on the Beat
The Bookies part of the FISO forum. Today's report:
Oh well at least we had a 14/1 winner (Newmarket
Cambridgeshire - Beauchamp Pilot - see FSN 57) to accompany the
two losers so far. I've struggled to find a tip 'to order' this time,
but...perhaps Pugin - The Melbourne Cup. Generally a 10/1 shot, check on
oddschecker.co.uk or have a look around for a quote. 1/10 only as a rating
of confidence. The price is short, but it has become apparent in recent
years that the Handicapper in Australia sometimes lets the Europeans in too
lightly. A top class stayer in Ireland for John Oxx, the Godolphin team are
the best at pulling off this sort of thing. I expect him to be a single
figure price on the first Tuesday in November such is Godolphin's
confidence, and you may like a small win bet now.
P.S. Breeders Cup Distaff - Azeri. Overpriced @ 2/1
Paddy Power. Evens Hills. Impressive trial winner.
P.P.S. Zibelline - Having tipped the winner of the
Cambridgeshire @14/1, try this one @40/1 with Totalbet.com (to £25 e/w max)
for the Cesarewitch and an autumn double ! - Ladbrokes have cut the price to
25/1 and it feels like a 16/1 shot.
Andy'.
