Champions League Fantasy Football games! Manchester and Newcastle United may be
sulking following their early Premiership results but this week, along with
Arsenal, Liverpool and 28 other clubs from the cream of Europe, they take
part in UEFA's Champions League. Worldwide TV screens will be displaying this
spectacle of football from Tuesday 17 September 19:45 p.m. all
the way through to the final next May to see who wins the greatest honour in
European club football. The Champions League takes place in 3
stages, the first 2 league based and the last knock-out based. Over the next 6
weeks the clubs will be whittled down from 32 to 16 (Group Stage 1), before
battle recommences in November for those 16 clubs with the Group Stage 2 leagues
and then the final 8 clubs go through to a knock-out competition resulting in
the final in May 2003. The specific match days are as follows: Group Stage1: Matchday 1 - 17,18 Sep 2002 Group Stage 2: Knock-Out Stage: We take an in-depth look at 2 of the
top Fantasy Football Games based on the Champions League. In addition to these
two, the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game has just been launched -
for details of this free to enter competition. Fantasy
League's Champions League Fantasy League (OFL) have set up 3 separate
competitions (i.e. there is no overall competition) each one based on one of the
3 phases of the Champions League. Whilst there is a maximum 2 players per club
rule there is no budget and no squad system - just choose 11 players and
use your 6 transfers in the phase to get ahead of everyone else, so the game is
relatively simple to operate. Tactics on transfers should be based around the
fact that Groups A to D play on one evening and Groups E to H on another, as
well as the 2 player per club restriction and the points scoring system. Your 11 man team must be in a 4-4-2
formation (one goalkeeper, four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers)
and as usual you can make changes up to 15 minutes before kick off. OFL
have the usual Friends & Enemies League and to join the FISO league, just
apply to join. OFL also suggest which players to watch out for and summarise the
groups here. For your £7.50 entry fee, three separate
prizes (cash of £1,000 plus Final tickets/Widescreen TV) are on offer to the
winner of each phase. Managers can reset their teams for the next stage. Replica
football shirt prizes are also awarded to the manager that scores the most
points in each week of the Champions League season i.e. Tuesday and Wednesday
Champions League matches. Each winner of their Prize League (at the end of each
Phase) will also be placed into a prize draw. The usual OFL scoring system is in place:
Telegraph Fantasy Football Online (TFFO) has
every right to claim to be the most interactive Premiership Fantasy Football
game around and now they have turned their attention to the UEFA Champions
League! At £5 per team you can take control of an
18-man squad and manage them towards a prize of £5,000 for the top manager
at the end of the season and runners-up prizes of £3,000 and £2,000 for second
and third place. This is a season-long game and not phase based. The £80m budget seems tighter than the £80m
Premiership budget! Pick 2 goalkeepers, 6 defenders, 6 midfielders and 4
strikers and use your substitutions and starman (double points) wisely - note
only 11 players can play at any time. With only 12 transfers on offer for the
entire competition, you must aim to try to pick all your initial 18 from the 8
clubs that make it through to Phase 2. A maximum 5 can be made in any month
although it seems odd to retain this 'Premiership' rule. As usual, you can make team changes and
transfers right up until kick-off to cater for late team news. Points
scoring is as follows:
As mentioned above, in any team selection
(i.e. for each evening's matches) a "Star Player" must be chosen. The
points any player gains (or loses) when selected as the star player for the team
will be doubled. FISO
have had discussions over the past week with the CEO of the company that is
running the above game. The following is a quote from him regarding the game and
the company. I do stress that, partly because the company is registered and
based in Canada, FISO have been unable to gather any independent background
information about the company; we do sincerely hope it is a genuine attempt to
make a big impact in the fantasy sports arena. John
James Bridge, CEO of AJB Group International Ltd: Click

the debate on the FISO forum regarding this game and further information from
the CEO including a special FISO challenge for their first weeks football
competition. 3. Premiership Injury news

2. Sluggish website,
poor coverage in the newspaper and unhelpful transfer rules; may be symptomatic
of problems and indifference of Telegraph this summer? 3. Competition numbers
are down from the approximate 90,000 entries in 2001 (and are dramatically
down on the 170,000 taking part in 1995); will there be a worthwhile cricket
contest next season, perhaps a missed opportunity by the Telegraph to expand a
popular game? 4. Good news: FISO
super leaguer, Mr P Williams, manager of Tyke Terriers, has taken the Sussex
county prize in week 18.

Corner. 'I'm pleased to provide the odd racing tip
for FISO members. I'll give a rating to the bet with 5/10 being average. You can
catch more of my tips on the Beat
The Bookies part of the FISO forum. Today's tip: Newmarket Cambridgeshire - Beauchamp
Pilot @ 14/1 (each way) We got the value with Bandari but no cigar !
If you like racing you'll no doubt have seen the Arc trials today; I've backed
Aquarelliste already and if she comes back to form she's the one I'd want to be
on, but a name even race fans may not have heard of - Falbrov - is up against
her and bang in form and this race may hold the key against the Derby winners
this year. Andy.' Andy has also tipped Aquarelliste @
14/1 for the Prix de L'arc de Triomphe (October) - see more details here. |
