1. Fantasy Formula One - Sun Dream Team and Fantasy League Comps are Launched

The Sun's F1 Dream Team 2002 (see newspaper and website later this week for full details)

The Sun have a certain principle with their Dream Team competitions - make it Simple to Pay and Play. This concept leads to big entries AND big prizes! This year's F1 Dream Team is no exception to the rule with a fabulous £50,000 on offer to the winner!

Full details of the competition will appear in the Sun at the end of this week (there will be 11 selections of 7 drivers and 4 constructors) but what we've done is highlight below the new features added to The Sun's F1 Dream Team game:

  • They've added in a series of new individual Grand Prix prizes which means you can still be in with a shout of bagging some serious cash even if you're team is lurking well down the overall table.
  • You can now form your own Mini League within the overall game, inviting up to 49 friends or colleagues to join in. Their website will take the strain through the season, calculating each team's points score and relative performance. And they've even thrown in an extra £4,000 prize for the best F1 Dream Team Mini League at the end of the season.
  • The F1 Dream Team website allows you to enter up to five teams in one go and what's more you can get five teams for the price of four. So if you enter five teams in one go, you only pay £20 rather than £25. Please note you must pay by credit/debit card for multiple team entries.
  • They've also made it easier to pay for your entry. If you're entering just one team you now have a couple ways to pay for your team by debit/credit card (as before) or by premium rate phoneline.
  • They've expanded the league tables section so you can now monitor how your team is faring in the overall league AND in each of the 17 Grand Prix. And if you're in a Mini League, you can see how your league is performing compared with all the other mini leagues in the game in the race to the £4,000 end of season prize.
  • They've added a 'My Details' page which allows you to update your personal details and preferences. Changed your e-mail address? Want to subscribe or unsubscribe to the game’s SMS updates? Moved house since registering? Use this new facility to keep them fully up to date and ensure you are always abreast of all the F1 Dream Team developments.
  • Once you’ve registers you’ll also notice a new Scoring Breakdown page. This details exactly how and when your team clocks up the points, so you can keep even closer tabs on the race for the £50,000 first prize.
  • They've introduced a new scoring rule: the “Pit Tactics of the Day”, as picked by The Sun’s reporter, earns 15pts for whichever Constructor it is awarded to.
  • Finally, you can now enter throughout the season. If you miss the first entry deadline (midday Friday March 1), don’t worry you can still join in and have a crack at the individual £1,000 Grand Prix prizes. Registrations will reopen at midnight Sunday after a Grand Prix and close at midnight Thursday preceding the next Grand Prix. Entries taken during any of these periods will start scoring immediately but of course will not get points from any Grands Prix missed.

Fantasy League F1

Fantasy League have teamed up with ITV-F1 and F1 new boys Toyota to bring you a great Fantasy F1 game with the season's top prize a fab Toyota MR2!

Simply select a team of six drivers, one engine and a set of tyres from the respective selection lists, ensuring that the total value of these selections does not exceed the quota of $50m.

Changes are unlimited for the duration of the warm-up period, right up until the start of the Brazilian Grand Prix on 31st March 2002. Only races 3 to 17 count towards the season's Fantasy League F1 championship and the top prize of the sports car.

Once the main championship has commenced, team managers have an opportunity between each race to make up to three changes to their selections. This may comprise any combination of driver changes, engine change and a change of tyre choice, so long as no more than three changes are made in total. Obviously you must still ensure that your selections remain within the allocated $50m budget. In true Fantasy League tradition, team changes can be made up to 15 minutes before the start of the race, allowing manager's to consider driver/car form during qualifying and changes to race conditions.

Prizes courtesy of Toyota are also on offer to winners of each Grand Prix weekend, the warm up period and the top overall Friends & Enemies league (top 5 teams scores to count).

The scoring system needs to be considered carefully and can be accessed from here. The aim must surely be to try and pick the winner (driver, engine and tyre) of each Grand Prix by using the 3 transfers available for each race. Fitting as many quality drivers into the remaining 5 driver seats whilst staying within budget is not an easy task and will sort the leaders from those bringing up the rear a lap behind!

The first (warm up) race gets underway on 3rd March with the Australian GP - races 1 and 2 will provide valuable lessons to do enter soon (unlimited transfers available until the start of race 3). The entry fee for the ITV-F1 Fantasy Game is £10.00.

Interested in talking about tactics or about constructors/drivers/tyres? Why not use the FISO Formula 1 forum?

  • 1st and 2nd stage auction bids are in for the free FISO Professional Fantasy League (courtesy of Fantasy League Limited). • Fantasy League's classic game is stirring the emotions of those managers left in the cup competition. Some very close ties and last minute transfers have led to some FISO members getting through to the next round on goal difference. FISO forum links 1, 2 and 3.

1.  Come to Newmarket Races on Sunday 5th May!

Plans are afoot for an informal get together for Fantasy Sports fans on the day of the 1,000 Guineas at the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket on Sunday 5th May!

If you are over 18 and would be interested in coming along (friends welcome too) then please let me know at CK@FISO.co.uk Please try and email me by 10 February so we can gauge likely numbers by then. If you have any questions about the event then please just email me. FISO forum link.

People that have already expressed an interest in coming along include representatives from Fantasy League Limited, The Sun Dream Team, Team Boss and, from the other side of the 'fence', yours truly, Andy Luckhurst and David Browne.

If you have not been to Newmarket Races before then this would be a wonderful chance to experience a great afternoon out. The Rowley Mile Course has been home to the first two of the five great "classic" Races, the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas, since 1814 and 1809 respectively. The 2002 1,000 Guineas will take place in front of the recently built Millennium Grandstand which provides superb views of the course and surrounding countryside.

Grandstand & Paddock entry fees are only £12 if booked by 28 February and there is free parking. A link to full details on Newmarket Races and the Guineas is:

http://www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk

P.S. We've checked that there is no football scheduled for that day on the Bank Holiday weekend, being the day after the FA Cup final! Should anyone be unable to make the Sunday then it is likely that a few people (including me) will also be going on the Saturday 4th May (2,000 Guineas day) so let me know if you would be interested in coming on Saturday instead.

2. Website Access Speeds - Roger Wilson

FISO's resident IT expert, Roger Wilson, takes a look at the principles behind internet access speeds and looks at access times for five of the major fantasy football website:

A couple of years ago most of us had the choice of a 56k modem, or if we were lucky an ISDN line, as a connection to the internet. Since then technology has progressed rapidly. We now have the additional choices of Cable Modem and ADSL connections.

So which is the best? Luckily I have access to different connections to the internet and listed below are the average download speeds attainable:

Connection Type

Burst Speed (kbps)

Average Download Speed (kbps)

Time to Connect(Seconds)

Modem

4 - 6

20 - 30

ISDN

ADSL – Home User 512k

40 - 70

3

ADSL – Business User 512k

80 - 140

85

1

As you can see, the cable and ADSL connections are substantially faster than the modem and ISDN connections. The 'burst' speed is essentially the ceiling on the data transfer.

If you are not fortunate enough to be able to connect via Cable or ADSL then there are various courses of action available to you that can help increase the load speed of your internet browser:

  • Disable “Show pictures” option in browser (suggested by 'Rich' on the FISO Forum) - Go to internet options (in tools on your browser top menu) Choose advanced, then untick show pictures (under multimedia), press Apply this, then press OK. You will have no pictures (which could make it difficult on some sites!) and the pages will load about 3 times faster (or more).
  • Increase the amount of RAM on your computer. Most people think it’s the speed of the processor that increases the speed of the computer and its programs. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as that. Although a faster CPU can increase the speed of your computer it may still under-perform due to other constraints, such as lack of memory (RAM), a slow or full hard drive, out dated BIOS or an out dated operating system. These causes are not definitive, just the most common. The easiest of these to upgrade is RAM and at around £50 for 128Mb it’s probably also the cheapest.
  • Don’t use large images as your desktop wallpaper. These images are using RAM all the time and can cause your computer to slow down.
  • Try to minimise the number of background programs running because all consume resources.
  • Check the settings of your anti-virus programs. Some are set to scan every-time a file is opened or a program run. Although this is the ultimate protection, it can increase the load on the CPU to a point that 50 – 100% increase in program load time is not uncommon.

Using a cable modem I tested five of the major fantasy football websites for access speed. The results were as follows:

 Fantasy Football Website

Average Upload Speed (kbps)

Average Download Speed (kbps)

Average Refresh Time (Seconds)

Sky Sports Super Manager (SSSM)

12

65

3

Original Fantasy League (OFL)

As you can see from the average refresh time (aimed at checking server speed on the home page and tested at a time of minimal traffic), there doesn’t seem to be much difference between them. That is until you dig a little deeper. For these sites to be interactive they need to be able to upload as well as download.  There have been comments on FISO’s forum regarding the time taken to process transfers on TFF (Telegraphfantasyfootball.co.uk). The upload speed for this site is very low compared with the other sites. Therefore the likely overall speed problem with TFF relates to the upload speed (or server download speed), not your own computer's download speed!

Another point to note is that the processing (i.e. matching login details to team details) is performed on the web server and then converted into, and sent in, HTML format to your browser. At times of heavy access the hosting web servers will be coping with the processing of queries as well as the download requests, thus reducing your download and upload speed. Even with ADSL, TFFO can take up to 30 – 40 seconds to load on a Monday lunch time (when everyone is trying to find out their score and reducing the download and processing speeds substantially). As I am sure we are all aware, these sites are always going to be slow at times of high traffic.

I hope this unveils some of the mysteries of website access speed. If anything is not clear, please feel free to ask me questions via the FISO forum where I will try my best to help. Happy surfing! Roger Wilson (Roger@FISO.co.uk)

1.  Fantasy FA Cup

The 2001/02 FA Cup starts for the Premiership Clubs this Saturday 5th January at midday. We take a quick look around the grounds at how the FA Cup impacts on the major Fantasy Football games.

  • TFF (Telegraph Newspaper) - FA Cup scores DO count (and yes you're right they didn't count last year!)
  • The Sun Dream Team - FA Cup scores DO count (see Hot Topics below re their transfer window)
  • The Times Fantasy League - FA Cup scores DO count towards the main league and also count towards a separate FA Cup league which has a £3,000 1st prize
  • TFFO (Telegraph Online) - FA Cup scores do NOT count BUT a special and separate FA Cup competition has been introduced (see part 4 below for details).
  • OFL (Fantasy League Classic) - FA Cup scores do NOT count towards main league and CL/UEFA/IT play-offs BUT there is a separate league for all classic teams in which only FA Cup points will count.
  • BBC - FA Cup scores do NOT count
  • SSSM (Sky Sports Super Manager) - FA Cup scores do NOT count
  • TeamBoss - FA Cup scores do NOT count
  • PlayerBoss - FA Cup scores do NOT count
  • Ladbrokes - FA Cup scores do NOT count

This is our understanding of the rules of each game - please do however check the relevant website/newspaper.

2. Hot Topics

Hot topics since the last newsletter include (with a link to the subject if covered on the FISO forum):

  • SSSM (Sky Sports Super Manager) has reached the end of its 1st month but not without some problems (see forum links one and two). With the first winner of the £5,000 monthly prize now resolved, all teams are now reset to zero and the battle starts again to get into the top 50 at the end of January. With over 40,000 teams entered it will not be an easy task. If you want to join the FISO SuperLeague just enter the PIN 21603 in the SuperLeague section of 'League/Winners'.
  • The Sun Dream Team transfer window is now open and closes at noon on Saturday 5th January. Make up to 3 changes to your 11 man team to try to enhance your chances of winning the £100,000 first prize (with prizes down to 4th place). There are also weekly (£1,000 prize) and monthly (£4,000 prize) competitions to go for. If going for the season prizes, don't forget there is an end of season 20 point bonus to the highest scoring player over the season (Henry is currently leading this, although Van Nistelrooy is closing in rapidly). (N.B. A Dream Team week runs from midnight Thursday so do not think that transfers affective from noon on Saturday will influence the manager of the week for the week that includes the 1 and 2 January games). Forum link.
  • After putting the matter to the vote of the leading managers, Playerboss decide to not count the scores for the weekend 15 & 16 December following an unfortunate DNS (Domain Name System) problem. Forum link.
  • If anyone wants to try Playerboss out prior to next season, entry is now free. There are monthly prizes on offer which any team can win. There is a maximum entry of two free teams per person. Full details on the website.
  • The Telegraph Online have launched a Fantasy FA Cup game with a £3,000 first prize. Last date for entries are noon on Saturday 5th January. Forum link. See 4 below for more details.
  • A large number of players in the online simulated football management game SSFM (Sky Sports Football Manager), which is run by NI Sports and endorsed by Sky Sports, have been experiencing technical problems with the game. Officially launched in December, most players are hopeful that SSFM can be rapidly improved to successfully deliver on its promises and in fact we get the impression that some of the managers playing the game are quite willing to offer their services for free to NI Sports to help improve the game! Forum link.
  • After two weeks off, the final play-off week in OFL's classic group Cup stages is the week ending 13 January. With Liverpool & Southampton playing twice that week their players may be favourite choices for those managers desperate for a win in fear of being knocked out - remember only the top 3 of the 6 teams in each group stage go through. Forum link.
  • Fancy a new challenge? Then enter a new 'FISO members only' FF competition. No entry fee and a deadline for entries on 10 January. Forum link.
  • The table has been updated in the Formation Football and FISO FREE mid-season competition. Here FISO members are competing against each other in this exclusive FISO.co.uk league. Mike Jones is leading the way closely followed by John Goody and Rich Kellard. Forum link.

Each goal scored by one of your strikers earns you points and these increase with every round they progress. And the lower the division, the more points a striker earns you per goal. A striker from the lowest group can score up to 10 times more points for a goal than a striker from the top group. Choose a star player for each round and his points are doubled. So find that 'low group' on form striker whose team progresses through to the latter stages of the FA Cup and you could be on to a winner!

You can also bump up your points between rounds with an online Quiz which is part historic questions and part predictions. Receive 5 points for each correct answer with 5 questions appearing each Monday and answers needed by Friday midnight.

Strikers that have been performing well in the Nationwide League and whose teams are playing in the FA Cup include Goater (Man City), Morrison (Crystal Palace), John (Notts Forest), Claridge & Sadlier (Millwall), Zamora (Brighton), Greenacre (Mansfield), Alsop (Cheltenham) & Glover (Macclesfield).

Kick Off

Established in Nov 2001, Kick Off is a Free PBeM Simulation Football Management Game that includes 12 teams from the Premiership and 12 teams from Division 1 as well as the Kick Off Cup competition that is loosely based on the Champions League. All the players are up to date as per start of the 2001/2002 season and mirror players who currently play in real life with stats that reflect their true ability. You have to submit your team each week via email and liaise with other managers to make those all-important transfers whilst not getting into debt. So pit your wits against other real life managers to see who is the best of the best in Kick Off.

UKIFL

The UKIFL is a FREE play-by-email (PBEM) Fantasy Soccer Management game. The UKIFL consists of 20 teams, divided into 2 divisions of 10 teams. Each team will play each other twice per season (home and away) with promotion and relegation at stake, with an added cup competition. The games are run by computer using freeware software called @esms which was developed by Eli Bendersky and Igor Oks.

Each week you are required to submit a team sheet containing your instructions on how you wish your team to play that week. You can make substitutions, change formation and switch tactics all depending on the circumstances of the game.

Super Soccer Manager (SSM)

Super Soccer Manager is a new soccer simulation game where you can manage a club in England, Italy, Spain or Scotland. It is a realistic game which provides you with all the day-to-day tasks of a football manager.

Filipe Soccer League

Filipe Soccer League is a simulated fantasy soccer league, were you make all the decisions that can lead you to the title. There currently are two leagues running, and next season, which will begin in February, will have a champions cup competition between the two leagues.

2. Hot Topics on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

The FISO fantasy sports forum was launched in August 2001 and with over 200 topics and 1,300 posts about fantasy football so far and now averaging close to 1,000 page views per day, the FISO forum is the place to talk to your fellow players and get an opinion about a game or hear about the latest news. Why not join in our forum? Just choose yourself a password and username, leaving your name and email address, and then you're free to post.

Hot topics posted during the first half of December are:

  • And the Nominations for the Fantasy Football 'Homer Simpson of the Month' Award are .....
  • Following an unfortunate DNS (Domain Name System) problem over the weekend, Playerboss are consulting with managers on how best to resolve the scoring for the weekend matches. Online game problems are seemingly part of the Fantasy Football scene but what is crucial is how Game Providers deal with the problems and we are glad to see Playerboss putting matters to the managers for a vote.
  • The Telegraph are launching a Fantasy FA Cup game with a £3,000 first prize. Last date for entries are noon on Saturday 5th January.
  • A weekly topic is on how FISO members have got on at the top of the TFF leaderboard. This week's weekly winner will also be scoring over 100 points.
  • SSFM (Sky Sports Football Manager) has formally launched. We've asked the SSFM promoters whether a 'world' can be created for FISO members - please let us know if you are interested in joining such a world and playing against teams managed by other FISO members.
  • FISO members' progress on the TeamBoss leaderboard is highlighted.
  • Continued discussions about the launch of the Ladbrokes Europe game which after one round of matches now takes a 3 month break. It appears that only about 200 managers are currently entered and thus in with a shout of the £10,000 first prize and late entrants may not be too greatly disadvantaged.
  • Confirmation on the final month's standings in the now ceased PFTB game.
  • Vote for the best and worst World Cups.
  • The table has been updated in the Formation Football and FISO FREE mid-season competition. Here FISO members are competing against each other in this exclusive FISO.co.uk league. John Goody is leading the way closely followed by Steve Legg and Justin Bartholomew.
  • Updates from the first round of matches in SSSM (Sky Sports Super Manager) and an invite to join the FISO SuperLeague (just enter the PIN 21603 in the SuperLeague section of 'League/Winners').
  • An update on the TFFO FISO mini-league with the top 10 as follows as at 17 December 2001:

1  Mr MA Nunn  S_P_U_R_S  1146
2  David Browne  RELEGATED SCREAMING  1143
3  Mr A S Luckhurst  TOBES 1142

10  Mr A S Luckhurst  EDDIE WOO  1101

Courtesy of the ITV Sport Channel, we will be offering a free Mitre football to, in our opinion, the most interesting or useful post to the FISO message forum during the month of December 2001. The winner will be emailed within 1 week of the month end and needs to provide their address to us (no one else will see it) so we can post the football to you. We will also confirm on the message forum who the prize has been awarded to.

The winner of post of the month for November was 'Rooster' for his combined posts on the FF Stereotypes topic and his FF World Cup game idea which he thinks is ideally suited for OFL. Thanks to 'Rooster' (and everyone else) for helping to make the forum a success.

3. New Fantasy Sports Game Reviews

Here is what Andrew Scott from FootieManager.com had to say about the coverage of his game in FSN 41 on 30 November 2001 - 'just a quick note to say a big thanks for covering footiemanager.com. The response was great and has forced me to open another league to cope with the demand!' Here are more recent submissions to FISO:

European Football Management Simulation (EFMS)

Play by Mail football management simulation that has been running for 10 years. Turns are charged at 2.00gpb and run approx every 7-10 days. Includes all real life cup competitions, running to real life rules. English Premier, Div One, Serie A and Atlantic league, all with real life players and accurate stats.

Premier Fantasy Football League (PFFL)

Global Fantasy Football (GFF)

Global Fantasy Football is a Real-Life Performance fantasy footy site. Build a world class 15 man squad with £100 million. There are two game options: play for free in the Grand League, or set up your own Private Group League for you and up to 10 Friends for £19.95. Private Group League managers also play in the Grand League.

Fantasy World Sports

This Irish based fantasy game is based on the Italian Serie A, the English Premier league and the Spanish La Liga! To play, you simply select two groups of clubs, two groups of goalkeepers and three groups of strikers. There's no budget. You score Gems (Gems are fantasy points) for each club and player in each group depending on club wins, losses etc, goalkeeper clean sheets & goals conceded and striker goals scored. The person whose team scores the most Gems by the end of the season, will win the top prize of €20,000 (Irish). There are Manager of the Month prizes as well. It costs €15 (IEP 11.81) to register a team. Scoring starts on September 29 and ends with the last matches of the leagues (including replays) of the 2001/2002 season. There is no limit to the amount of teams you may enter. Entrants must be 16 or over by 20 May 2002.

Fantasy Factory

1.  PlanetFootballTeamBoss cancels its game after 8 weeks!

The following email was received by PFTB participants on Thursday 29 November:

'Due to poor crowd attendances and the low number of managers in the game, we regret to announce the decision to discontinue the Planet Football Team Boss game at the end of November's gaming month.

All managers will be refunded their entry fee in full and the game will cease from 12:00 GMT on December 5th.  For those managers who have enjoyed playing the game we are transferring all usernames and new passwords to our FREE TO PLAY game at http://www.teamboss.co.uk where you can manage your teams and compete for Manager of the Month.

The rules in Team Boss are slightly different to those of the Planet Football game and will require you to select your teams again - but look at it this way - what you actually get is 18 additional free transfers!  You even get to compete in your own mini league within the game which is only open to managers who have joined from the Planet Football game.

We are sick as parrots at having to make the difficult decision to discontinue the Planet Football game and would like to thank Planet Football for its support and encouragement during the game's brief life.  Thanks also to all the managers who played the game - we hope you will take up our offer to play at http://www.teamboss.co.uk'

FISO hope to get some reaction from TeamBoss over the next week and will keep everyone posted on the matter. It is once again very disappointing to see a Fantasy Football game with considerable prizes (£10,000 first prize) cancelled part way through the season particularly when participants have spent considerable time managing their teams. Please let us here your views via our Forum (see below).
