1.  The Original Fantasy League's Classic Game

Last entries for the Fantasy League's classic game is 11.45am on Saturday 17 November and the last game of qualification will be the IPS v BOL game @ 4pm on Sunday 18th November. Where you stand after the update on Monday 19th November morning will determine which Cup Competition you will be entered into (and what level of prize money you will be battling for).

The ability to set a team up now aimed at players in form and the fixtures over the next month or so should be an advantage over August entered teams even though they will have had 20 transfers originally. Hopefully you will get that bit of luck to finish in the top 3 (or top 7) of your 10 team mini-league who all start scoring from the same time as your team.

Apologies for indicating in the previous newsletter that transfers would be 16 for this month - that newsletter should have gone out in October.

Read about Fantasy League's and FISO's joint 'League of Champions' Friends & Enemies League which was set up at the start of the season to see which of last year's FF Champions was 'top dog'. Andy Luckhurst is currently leading the way.

Good luck to all FISO subscribers over the weekend whose FL Classic team is on the border of top 3 or top 7 finish in their 10 team mini-league. May the goals and assists be with you!

2. Hot Topics on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

The FISO fantasy sports forum was launched in August 2001 and with over 150 topics and 750 posts about fantasy football so far, this is the place to get an opinion about a game or player or hear about the latest news. Why not join in our forum? Just choose yourself a password and username, leaving your name and email address, and then you're free to post.

Hot topics posted during the first half of November are:

  • Formation Football and FISO have teamed up to bring you an exciting FREE mid-season competition. Here you will be able to compete directly against other FISO members in this exclusive FISO.co.uk league. There are a limited number of entrants (and entries close on Friday 23rd November) so apply quickly.
  • Sarah Goodacre from TeamBoss has approached the FISO crowd for your opinions on what will make the most enjoyable Fantasy World Cup game. Please help shape their World Cup game by posting your opinions on the forum.
  • ILiveFootball are launching a Fantasy Football game which, whilst simulated, will be based on the outcome of real action. They are looking for some feedback from the FISO crowd.
  • Apparently the typical 'pro' Fantasy Football player is a) married, white collar and in his 30s with b) a maths background and no Premiership team to support. Is this you? Yes/No? Well then please let the forum users know! 'Rooster' is particularly interested in hearing if anyone falls into the category of 'an exotic fully mopped single female in her twenties renting a flat with a goldfish in the city, who cycles to the factory for a daily pittance'. See how many points you score in Rooster's stereotype rating. Some messages from some of the females who subscribe to FISO would help to even out the male dominance on the forum!
  • Mark Maydon of News Group Digital has asked if he can have some feedback on The Sun's Dream Team competition - to quote his words 'Would love to hear your feedback on Dream Team . . . the good, bad and the ugly!' So let's hear what everyone has to say!
  • Rather worryingly, Sarah Goodacre of TeamBoss has highlighted that 'a few managers have had their squads accessed by other managers. Some of you have chosen passwords that are the same or very similar to either your user name or team name or have some connection with your user details. There are sad people out there that have nothing better to do than sit for hours trying to access and sabotage squads and I suggest that you could make it harder for them by ensuring that your passwords are impossible to guess. You can click on "profile" on the Team Bench and change your password yourself.' A word of warning therefore for all managers - make sure your passwords are very different to your user or team name! 'Striker' has also highlighted that Gamesmasters do need to be wary of emails asking for password details.
  • 'Vid' has posted his experiences of being a beta tester for Sky Sports Football Manager.
  • Sky Sports Football Fantasia still intends to relaunch by the end of the year.

Courtesy of the ITV Sport Channel, we will be offering a free Mitre football to, in our opinion, the most interesting or useful post to the FISO message forum during the month of November 2001. The winner will be emailed within 1 week of the month end and needs to provide their address to us (no one else will see it) so we can post the football to you. We will also confirm on the message forum who the prize has been awarded to. October's prize winner was to 'Striker' for his post on 16 Oct regarding OFL's transfers situation - the topic was entitled 'Original Fantasy League Decide to Favour Late Entrants'. Thanks to 'Striker' (and everyone else) for helping to make the forum a success.

1.  Is November the Time for Major Transfers?

With one quarter of the EPL season over, are there some signs that the fairly predictable nature to the start of the league is about to change? So far this season a Leeds clean sheet with goals conceded by Leicester, Ipswich and Man Utd (amongst others) and points scored by Hasselbaink, Henry, Kewell, Pires, Ziege and Robert in each game, seemed the norm. A number of recent management changes with a turn in form for West Ham and Leicester and Owen's return to fitness and Angel's re-found scoring ability, combined with the resolvement of a stage of European matches and some International friendlies coming up, could be the prelude to some rather different results. This weekend's fixtures throws a number of this season's top performing teams against each other (Leeds v Spurs, Liverpool v Man Utd & Newcastle v Aston Villa) and with a fortnight's rest because of the Internationals, late November may be the time to undertake major surgery to your teams and draw ahead of those that prefer the more conservative approach of preserving transfers!

2. Latest news on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

The FISO fantasy sports forum was launched in August 2001 and with over 120 topics and 520 posts about fantasy football so far, this is the place to get an opinion about a game or player or hear about the latest news. Why not join in our forum? Just choose yourself a password and username, leaving your name and email address, and then you're free to post.

Two topics posted during late October are:

  • TFFO Site Access - Comments and opinions on TFFO's server firewall problems last weekend and tele's solution to the site access problems. Thanks also to Jim Cameron ('tele') for posting direct to the forum.
  • PFTB (11.30am kick-offs) - news and comments on Planet Football Team Boss' decision to leave their team selection cut off at noon even though there are some 11.30 a.m. kick-off games (including this weekend) which may enable you to pick players that score points in the first 29 mins of the match.
  • PFTB (Arca) - Confirmation from Team Boss on the Arca 3 points error on 13 October and the action they state they will make. Thanks also to Sarah Goodacre from Team Boss for posting direct to the forum.
  • TFF Leaderboard - With 4 FISO forum users in the top 12, this is the place to hear about the latest happenings on the TFF leaderboard.

October's prize winner to be announced soon.

4. Formation Football Halves its Entry Fees

Formation Football has cut its entry fees in half:

  • Play as an individual in the Team Manager Game (was £7.00, now £3.50 per manager)
  • Create your own league of friends with the League Manager Game (was £6.00, now £3.00 per manager)

5. The Original Fantasy League

Remember, the usual season long competition is not the main point of playing Fantasy League's classic game. The top point scorer for the full season will win £1,000 but the main prizes await the winners of Cup play-offs. The latest you can enter is 11.45am on Saturday 17 November and the last game of qualification will be the IPS v BOL game @ 4pm on Sunday 18th November (i.e. not the Charlton v West Ham match at 8pm on Mon 19th November).

Any entrants during November will have 12 transfers for the season (rather than the 20 you would have had for an August entry - see below for clarification on transfers). The ability to set up a team now based on the next few months fixtures and still have 12 transfers is likely to be a big advantage over teams that entered in August and may prove vital when it comes to the round robin and knock out stages of the Cup competitions. So with 2 weekends of action left before the Group Stages kick-in select your time carefully to enter the action over the next few weeks and with a bit of luck you may well be able to defeat the earlier entered teams when it comes to the latter stages!

6. New Fantasy Sports Game Reviews - Sky Sports Football Manager

Sky Sports Football Manager

Below is a copy of a Press Release on SSFM from earlier this month:

'Sky Sports Football Manager is the ultimate realistic, multi-player football management game

Launching 5th November 2001, Sky Sports Football Manager brings the biggest brand in football to the most realistic and the first genuinely multi-player football management game ever.

Sky Sports Football Manager is a massive multiplayer football management simulation game that lets thousands of people run their favourite football club from the top five English divisions, while competing against other on-line players for the coveted title of “Sky Sports Football Manager of the Year”.

With Sky Sports Football Manager you can manage your favourite football team, whether it be Manchester United, Stoke City or Yeovil.  Buy and Sell players, select and train them, and compete in a league against other managers – real people, not just computer artificial intelligences.  Manage a real club, choosing any side from the Premiership, the Nationwide leagues or the Conference.  Play with real-name footballers in proper leagues.

Sky Sports Football Manager comes complete with transfers, suspensions, injuries, promotions and accurate statistics on thousands of worldwide professional footballers.  Training, transfers and tactics are extremely realistic, and the skill, ability and behaviour of your players at the start of each season are fine-tuned to match their real-life counterparts. That’s where you take over…

Sky Sports Football Manager is considerably more satisfying than fantasy football type games, purely because it’s more realistic.  It actually gives you a taste of what it is really like to run a top team.  And in line with the sport, you are joining a broad and passionate community, competing against thousands of fellow managers, experiencing the emotions, banter and glory associated with real football.

When you first play Sky Sports Football Manager you start at the entry level, Bronze 3, which is where all managers start their careers.  Players gain promotion through outstanding performance as a manager, moving up to the higher Bronze and Silver Worlds and even to the elite heights of the Gold World if they are good enough.

The best managers of the season will play in the ‘Gold World’.  The Gold World is the top level of play within Sky Sports Football Manager and is made up of the Premiership, the Nationwide divisions 1-3 and the Vauxhall Conference – in all, 114 teams which play the exact same fixtures, on the same days, as real live matches.  This is where players get to find out who really is the top manager – move over, Sir Alex!

Sky Sports Football Manager will be a subscription-based service.  Versions of the game will be distributed both online and at retail.  The Sky Sports Football Manager programme and the game statistics can be kept current through online updates. The game has also been specifically designed to exploit emerging wireless and digital technologies to expand players’ accessibility and gaming experience.

The service, which combines a standalone program running on a PC with an integrated website for content and community operations, will launch in the UK in November. Sky Sports Football Manager will be available on a monthly subscription of £6.99.  Billing, customer care and online support will be managed by N.I. Sports, with Intel providing a fully managed hosting environment.'

2. Latest news on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

3. News of Amazon Offers on Popular Games and Books

  • Tiger Woods - How I Play Golf - 'How I Play Golf' was published on 4 October 2001 and offers a lavishly illustrated instructional book with four-colour photography, original artwork, unique sequential shots of Tiger in action, and easy-to-follow diagrams for golfers of all abilities - 30% off at Amazon.
  • David Beckham Soccer - This Playstation game is released at the end of November 2001 and is bound to be extremely popular. Also available on Game Boy. Pre-order now.

4. Arca and Team Boss games

As highlighted on the FISO forum, the Sunderland midfielder/defender Arca has been scored incorrectly in the PlanetFootballTeamBoss game. FISO raised this issue with Sarah Goodacre at TeamBoss and her response was as follows:

SG: 'Your users are correct! We are aware of this problem and correct points will go on site next update. This was due to a mistake in the player pool that we received from OPTA. Arca was entered as being a midfield player, but is in fact a defender. On the original Team Boss site he receives defensive points - the same feed is uploaded into the planet site which is why the points are incorrect for a mid field player.

We will notify all managers that have Arca in their squad that their points will be adjusted at the next update.'

FISO: Hope that is all clear i.e. he is classified as a Defender in the original TeamBoss game but as a midfielder in the planetfootball TeamBoss game and this is how the confusion has arisen. (For the record, Peter Reid now plays Arca as a midfield player and not in defence and most games do list him as a midfielder now). We look forward to TeamBoss correcting their error.

5. The Original Fantasy League - Why You Should Enter a Team by 17 November!

In case you haven't noticed, the usual season long competition is not the main point of playing Fantasy League's classic game. The top point scorer for the full season will win £1,000 but the main prizes await the winners of Cup play-offs.

Each team entered from August through to 2.45 p.m. on Saturday 17 November 2001 will be placed in a group of 9 other teams that all start scoring from the same time. The position of your team in this 10 team mini-league as at 9am Monday 19th November determines which Cup competition your team goes through to (top 3 to the Champions League, next 4 to the UEFA Cup and bottom 3 to the Inter-Toto Cup). Your team is then placed in a 6 team mini-league where you 'play' each other team in these Group stages on a round robin basis. If you week's/weekend's score beats your opponents score then you gain 3 points, a draw is 1 point and 0 for a loss. The top 3 after this round robin format goes through to the knock out stages where the winner of the Champions League section wins £10,000, the UEFA Cup £5,000 and the Inter-Toto Cup £1,000 (cash winners also win match tickets).

So the latest you can enter is 2.45pm on Saturday 17 November and the last game of qualification will be the IPS v BOL game @ 4pm on Sunday 18th November (i.e. not the Charlton v West Ham match at 8pm on Mon 19th November).

Any entrants during this month will have 16 transfers for the season (rather than the 20 you would have had for an earlier entry - see below for clarification on transfers). The loss of only 4 transfers is likely to be a big advantage over teams that entered in August and may prove vital when it comes to the round robin and knock out stages of the Cup competitions. So with 3 weekends of action left before the Group Stages kick-in select your time carefully to enter the action over the next few weeks and with a bit of luck you may well be able to defeat the earlier entered teams when it comes to the latter stages!

Additionally there has been a little confusion regarding the number of transfers newly entered teams are allocated. In response to comments on the FISO message forum, Charles Marks has made this response:

'Hi,

As a Director of Fantasy League I wanted to clarify matters regarding the transfer issues raised above. Firstly, whilst the sentiment is valid, the transfers HAVE BEEN REDUCED FROM THE START OF OCTOBER, not the end, as incorrectly stated by one of our support team and quoted above. My apologies for this error (the employee has had 4 extra transfers removed from his team).

The rule about transfer reduction was, in parts of the site, slightly ambiguous. So, when we had to make the decision we chose to let September entrants get the full quota as it seemed slightly harsh to reduce them as the season had only started towards the end of August.

Some teams did manage to register in October and get the full quota and we subsequently removed the extra transfers and notified the users.

In all, we do believe that the playing field is as level as it can be, but, if any of you do not agree and would like to cancel your current teams and select a new team scoring from this weekend (with 16 transfers for the season), then just email me at charles@fantasyleague.com and we will arrange that for you.

I am told that new teams on the site are still displaying 20 transfers for the season but the database is telling us they only have 16. I am assured that the displayed figure (of 16) will be corrected on all teams by the weekend.

Thanks to all of you who have commented/complained about this. It all helps keep us on our toes!

I trust this clarifies the situation and you enjoy the rest of the season.

Charles'

1. TFFO Mini-League

Jim Cameron (alias 'tele') has now had the maximum limit removed. There are over 140 teams in our Fans of FISO mini-league (which is well over 100 more teams than any other mini-league) and we're looking for more! Whilst we have 7 of the top 15 overall teams in our mini-league, you don't have to be on that magic top 100 leaderboard to join in. If anyone wants to join us in a TFFO mini-league then just email us with the email address you entered TFFO under. There is no cost for you to enter and no-one will be able to access your team or see who you have playing. We are also looking into sorting out a prize for the top team in our mini-league - more news later.

Leading our mini-league is Ian Wild, the co-founder of FISO, who also walked away with £500 for the 2nd best performer in September plus £100 for best UK manager and is currently placed 3rd overall. Ian first got me interested (or is that addicted?) in fantasy football so can I just take a 'moment' here to reminisce?

August 1995: my first ever works fantasy football league and run by my good friend Ian. 1995/96 was the year of Yeboah and Les Ferdinand and the arrival of Zola and I had a lot to learn about playing fantasy football, with Ian Wild taking the works league in style. Next year was a different matter, yours truly walking away with the title and a short step away from better things with a 3rd place in a National Newspaper competition followed by 1st place in TPLO (now TFFO) in 2000/01. Our collaboration in early 2000 led to the launch of FISO.co.uk, a website for online fantasy sports fans! 18 months later with user sessions exceeding 2,000 per day at peak times and with over 1,000 subscribers to our newsletter (which was launched in March 2001), the results of the hard work put in is there to see. Congratulations Ian on the prize and I hope that if I can't defend my TFFO title, you can fend off the competition and take the win.

Anyone else want to tell us about how and when they first started out playing fantasy sports then post a message to our forum. The forum was launched just two months ago and with 80 topics and 300 posts about fantasy football in those 2 months, this is the place to get an opinion about a game or player and hear about the latest news.

2. Latest news on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

The prize for best post in the period to 30 September 2001 went to 'Vid' for his analysis of online fantasy football games on 7 September. Well done Vid and hope you enjoy the mitre football.

Two topics posted during early October are notices of success stories for fantasy football players so far this season (weekly or monthly prizes) and celebrations after England's qualification for the World Cup. Why not join in our forum? Just choose yourself a password and username, leaving your email address, and then you're free to post.

Remember, courtesy of the ITV Sport Channel, we will be offering a free Mitre football to, in our opinion, the most interesting or useful post to the FISO message forum during the month of October 2001. The winner will be emailed within 1 week of the month end and needs to provide their address to us (no one else will see it) so we can post the football to you. We will also confirm on the message forum who the prize has been awarded to

4. Planet Football Team Boss game & WWWATT Ltd

Many people will have seen (possibly from the FISO forum where it was highlighted on 5 Oct) that the Team Boss crowd have built a fantasy football game for Planet Football on which scoring starts on Saturday 13 October. This promises to be very popular so we've carried out an in depth review of the game below and asked Team Boss to tell us about the company behind the Team Boss games, WWWATT Ltd.

I spoke to Sarah Goodacre, Fantasy Football Project Manager, for WWWATT Ltd earlier on this week. This is what she had to say about WWWATT Ltd:

'Established in 1998, WWWATT.com was originally set up as an online retailer of music CDs marketing to affinity groups such as professional associations and trades unions. In 1999, work began on an affinity group portal and WWWATT designed, built, hosted and maintained websites for several Police Federations. By the spring of 2001 WWWATT.com was host to 13 police federation websites and 12 member services websites in addition to three corporate portals. These combined offerings give access to more than a million professionally-qualified workers. WWWATT.com is also host to a commercial site designed especially for people with disabilities.

In the summer of 2000, WWWATT.com established a further joint venture, Radio Interactive Limited, with Infinity Consulting. By the spring of 2001, five local radio stations within the Infinity group had live websites, complementing their broadcast offering with online advertising, games, play lists, local directories, community information and much more.

Team Boss was created as a "sticky" to generate traffic on the sites that we host.  News of how good Team Boss is leaked out to the general public boosting numbers from the expected 500 or so to a massive 14,000 - a number which is still steadily rising.

Having seen that planetfootball.com had no fantasy football for the 2001 season, we approached them asking them to sponsor a specially branded site that is only accessible through planet football.  Planet Football looked at all of the competition and chose Team Boss as the fantasy football game to offer on their site - and though they missed the start of the season, we hope that planetfootballteamboss.com will have the success that the original Team Boss game has experienced.

Team Boss has been designed to be great to look at and play.  Stats are provided by OPTA and are updated after each day's matches.  We have many cash prizes with a total prize pool of £25,000.  Unlike many other sites you can join at any time during the season for a chance to win the Manager of the Month Prizes.  Many of our managers have set up mini leagues so that they can challenge their friends or colleagues.'

I hope that the above statement by Sarah helps people understand who is running the game.

Our understanding of the rules of the game are as follows:

Entry cost - £3.99 for 1 team, £10 for 4 teams, £20 for 10 teams and £30 for 20 teams.

Squad system - pick 18 players using £100m and pick 11 to play each day in a 1 GK, 2 FB, 2 CB, 4 M and 2 S formation. Make your selections by noon on the day. No limit on players per club.

Season Prizes - 1st - £10,000, 2nd £4,000, 3rd £2,000, 4th £1,000 and 5th £500

Monthly Prizes - 1st £500, 2nd £250, 3rd £150, 4th £100 and 5th £50

Transfers - 15 for the season

Entry deadline - noon on 13 October 2001 (to score from the start)

Open to non-UK residents (as well as UK residents).

Statistics on goals scored, assists, appearances, goals conceded, bookings, own goals provided by Opta and if the main TeamBoss game is to go by should be updated promptly.

Please see the website for full rules and terms and conditions.

1. TFFO Mini-League

Tele has now increased the maximum limit from 25 up to 99 but after adding in 99 teams we still have people to add on so don't worry we will get round to you as soon as 'tele' sorts this out - the 'blurb' did promise an unlimited number of teams. We are also looking into sorting out a prize for the top team in our mini-league - more news later.

If anyone still wants to join us in a TFFO mini-league then just email us with the email address you entered TFFO under.

2. Latest news on, and Prizes for posts to, the FISO message forum

Courtesy of the ITV Sport Channel, we will be offering a free Mitre football to, in our opinion, the most interesting or useful post to the FISO message forum during the month of October 2001. The winner will be emailed within 1 week of the month end and needs to provide their address to us (no one else will see it) so we can post the football to you. We will also confirm on the message forum who the prize has been awarded to. We reserve the right to present more than one football if we believe more than one person deserves a prize. We will be deciding in the next week who deserves the prize for best post in the period to 30 September 2001.

Two very interesting topics posted during September are opinions on the current best 11 fantasy line-ups and a check on how Fantasy Football players are doing a month into the season. So if you want to know how people including me and Andy Luckhurst (Sky Sports Football Fantasia winner) are doing so far, check out the forum.

predict-a-league

predict-a-league is a season long football prediction game soon to go live which is designed to capitalise on the excitement and turbulence of real-life football league tables and outcomes. Players are required to place league teams in their correct league position, as well as spotting a wide range of predictions concerning the Premier League, Nationwide, domestic and European cup football.

By doing this you enter FIVE simultaneous competitions, with all the opportunities for rewards that brings;

  • the overall p-a-l Championship
  • the p-a-l Premier League Competition,
  • the p-a-l Nationwide Competition
  • the p-a-l Cup
  • the p-a-l Spot prediction Competition

The league predictions form the basis of their predict-a-league score. So every game and every result of the full 2001/2 season matters, as every minor change in the real league tables impacts on their position within predict-a-league. The second component of predict-a-league is a running spot competition which occurs throughout the season at regular intervals and requires the users to both predict individual events, e.g. Liverpool vs Manchester United, and knowledge predictions, e.g. who will be this month's leading goal scorer.

The game is quite different from fantasy, dream and weekly forecasting formats and regarded by regular players as a far more thorough test of their football expertise. The game amounts to an innovative and intricate way of attaching scores and values to, in effect, a mass of spread and forecast bets.  The window for entries should be in mid October. p-a-l charge £30 per player to participate, half of which will be retained as the prize fund.
