X Factor must be moving towards teh no audition stage and the inevitable "you owned the song" and "made it your own" diatribe..... (admittedly the very fat and camp McCulloch look-a-like from Kirkby could be interesting)

30ish years after she covered it

but did you know she more than owned these too?

The only versions I liked of those was the last one even though I know she's adored by the incrowd.Prefer the music of Janis Joplin.

And Janis wouldn't have got too far in X Factor, either.

Not too sure that Patti Smith is adored by the in crowd, though.

I adore her and I'm certainly not part of the 'in crowd'.

Depends where they're in.
You can't blame xfactor for all the current charts. The populace's music taste is quite able to decline all by itself mainly due to the RnB influx it seems. Then we could jokingly say it started with stock aitken and waterman but that 's probably more a sign of people's appetite for this type of music as if people didn't buy them they wouldn't be there. You can even watch xfactor without thinking any of their produce was worth buying. There's always the indie chart.

How many of the X Factor people actually make the charts?

One Direction just in at No 1.Olly Murs No 4.JLS No 25.Leona Lewis and Will Young(Pop Idol) 10 and 9.So not a small amount then it's not that much worse than most of the other records there.

Will Young was 10 years ago?

That looks like the full list of potentials, ignoring the Irish twins. Oh and the one who won last year... I assume they all release stuff to coincide with the program, and "star" appearances where they mime and get a standing ovation etc....

My real point is the idiot comments like "you owned the song" and "made it yours", not to mention the "you are a going to be a global star"...

I definitely remember them murdering quite a few classics. Then most recently there was that one who said here's a Michael Bolton song.It was To Love Somebody and you'd think he was definitely old enough to remember the Bee Gees.

While the X Factor is presented as a search for talented performers, it's actually just a 13 week (or however long the series runs) advert on prime time TV for people signed to Simon Cowell's company. Each week the viewers buy further into the 'acts' and if they have a sad back story all the better. You only have to look back at the range of people who have had chart success over the years, after appearing regularly on TV - Robson & Gerome, Ken Dodd, Nick Berry, Benny Hill, Anita Dobson, Michele Gayle, Telly Savales, David Soul, Denis Waterman, etc. Or maybe they all had hit records because of their great voices and song writing abilities.

Let's put some Youtube links up to counteract the Cowell machine.

That was the point, yes

I nearly put up Hendrix and The Doors versions of Gloria as well.

Seeing as X Factor is essentially cover versions, it was meant to show what "owning the song" and making it yours really means.
