For those who played it in 2006, which website did you do it on? I was on like 10, because of the hype? What do you reckon the best site is to play this game? It'll be good.

Was just wondering the same thing right now, never been involved in any World Cup or Euro ones before, wouldn't mind having a crack at one...

Is it all the usual suspects? - Sky, Times, etc... Or does Fifa do one?

FIFA should and probably will do one. During the 2006 hype, I did a number of games, but FPL only allowed you to choose players that play in the Premier League.

I played the fifa one back in 2006 and there was a real lack of alternatives to it really. I seem to remember the metro website did one as did FPL. The latter only allowed you to have english based players in your squad. Rubbish!

The fifa/mcdonalds one was very amateurish in its look and the rules/scoring system was a joke. You received points for players just having shots (regardless of whether or not they were on target) and being on winning sides. It was like nothing i'd ever played before. You only got a limited number of transfers per phase, and yet there were ways of unlocking 'secret' transfers which you only found out by chance if you were lucky. Your team going into the next set of games could be seen by your rivals and you could change your team right up til kick off, so there was lots of last second tactical changes and copying by leaders in the league i was in.

I think they ran a game for the world cup qualifiers and the site looked like at had changed/improved, so hopefully they've updated the rules to fall in line with some of the better fantasy football games out there.

The Fifa one during the qualifiers was fine. The only problem with it was you had to have made your transfers about 12 hours before the first kick-off. This meant the FISO m/l started with round 2, but was still quite playable.

I remember it fondly as I was actually top for 1 GW. Big smile all day because of that. :D

Thats good to hear. i clicked on the link above and you can click on the leaders' team and it all looks a hell of a lot better. In 2006, you team wasn't even displayed in any kind of formation, just in data form. so ugly. what was the scoring system like? more akin to fpl?

I can't remember the point scoring that well, but similar to FPL, you got points for goals, assists, clean sheets & also if the team won. So not quite the same as FPL, but perfectly sensible.

Of course, I don't know what they'll do when it all eventually kicks off.

It looks like FIFA will have the best one, as it's on the main World Cup site, just like Champions League Fantasy on UEFA.com. and Premier League Fantasy on premierleague.com.

My brain can't recall 4 weeks ago, but I do recall playing the "Classic" one, if that's what it was called? I was in the running for the first round prize when Spain and the Ukraine were playing but naturally it went horribly wrong ! The setup was very good though, with a squad of 15 and substitutions, etc.

Played the Metro one - remember it was good vlue at zero quid, lol.
Also played Ladbrokes.com's own, and of course the Sun, where I was top 20 up to QF and the Germans blew my chances by knocking out the Argies, who'd have put me top with a clean sheet and a goal for Messi, I remember.

Slightly off subject, but as I can't find the info anywhere else - does anyone know the start and finish dates for YTM April MOM competition?

Says registration deadline by Sat 27th March at noon, but does this mean April's scoring starts then, inclusive. I thought March's competition would finish with this weekends scores? Can't find the info on their site , so does anyone know the deal?

The Mirror normally do one so I would think there should be a YTM one.

The Times did one last time, but to be fair it was probably the worst run competition in Fantasy Football history. It was cheap however and did at least have a semi descent prize.

Normally most of the major papers have some sort of fantasy competition for the World Cup.

Was hoping that the OFL player lists would be out by now - a couple of the papers usually use their services: last time out ofl was live by april 28th....

Metro will definitely have one as they've done a press release already - but looks like gfm have lost their contract, or at least another company is coming in;

I was looking forward to a Metro one the same format as their Champions league game :(

"FSB will assemble and deliver live performance ratings for every player appearing in the finals of the fantasy football contest, which combines fantasy sports and fixed-odds sports betting. Players are awarded points for performance based on goals scored, ref. infringements or tackles.."

Sounds awful :?

sounds american!

i can almost hear mike shipley rubbing his hands at these rules

not sure it will catch on as fanball didnt.

that said a total relief to see gfm gone who in my view have completely spoilt their comps with their refusal to be honest about the stupid 5-entry rule. they also allowed a similar rule to be totally abused in a times comp (and that was a paid for game) that unsurprisingly only ran for one year!

they have been awful running tff this year aswell and the sooner they are gone from fantasy game running the better!

FSB is the parent company of Fanball. Can't believe they are touching the UK market again after the debacle and cost (to them) of their Premiership game a few years ago.

good spot neil.

can't agree they went blind a little last time.

the cost to them this time will probably be far less and the prizemoney probably more sane with the huge edge of having a large paper behind them!

dont forget they went cold on their own last time

There might be some confusion here - FSBtech (uk) might be different from the US version, and indeed is different from Fantasy sports business - from which this is a recent and relevant news item about fanball....

greetings all.
Is there any FISO way for Irish people to enter the Telegraph World Cup competition ? I seem to recall their T&C's were restricitive in the past.
I suppose I could just use someone's address or something - is it the address that limits access or what?

Fanball! I never thought I'd hear that company uttered on fiso again. I hope the Metro manage to stump up a decent prize fund for this one, even pay to enter. But I doubt it. :(
