FS Record: Best TFF 116th in 10/11, 2010/11 Record - TFF 116th , Metro -110th. £260 of winnings from Side Competitions
Have been bought a Laptop for Christmas.

I have never owned a laptop before and have always used a home PC with wired broadband to connect to the Internet. I am with Talktalk and am using the modem they provided me with around 4 years ago.

I need to get the Laptop up and running on wireless broadband. Now do I

(i) Purchase a wireless router myself or ask my provider talk talk to provide one?

(II) Can I keep the home PC on wiredinternetand the laptop on wireless via the same router?

Any other general tips that I will need to know,

Thank You.

If you dont already have a wireless router, you'll need to get one (no idea if Talk Talk will provide).
Could be that they already have…. i dont know the nuances, but possibly they send out wireless routers by default (last couple of times ive changed providers I think they have (cant remember if ive inadvertently told them as part of the order process).

But if/when you get a wireless router, you will be able to have the PC wired and the laptop working wirelessly.

Usually, when you switch the laptop on, it will detect any wireless signals in range (including neighbours').
You can lock them down (so no one else sees it though… i.e. if your laptop doesnt pick up your router, dont assume its not a wireless one).

Maybe have a butchers and google its name (or post it on here).

Routers are quite cheap to buy wcv but I think you'd have a good chance of blagging a new router from talktalk if you threaten to leave

Setting rhings up is one of those things that are easy when you know how. I've received great advice on here in the past about it. Happy to try and help.
