The post count for this forum for July has been exceeded now, unlikely to be any replies before August :-)

It's a shame about TFFO. I was looking forward to trying it this year. :(

Fair to say this isn't the busiest forum but hopefully it will liven up a bit if some of you guys are switching to OFL.

Hello, another TFFOer here.

I played this several years ago and did quite badly but I generally do well at the OFL style 11 man games so it could go either way :?

Anyone like to give a few tips to the newcomers?

Usual stuff, don't pick defensive midfielders, make sure you use super-subs as a back up for setting up teams for each match, goal scorers, assisters and CSs getters count, playing and doing nothing scores the same as not playing = zero! 2 from any one club, prices are a bit weird but there's usually something they've under-priced. Don't plan your weekend by using their predicted line-ups!!!!

I'm a relative newbie to this too Art, I've played before but never as my main game. One of the most important parts of the season is now, as you're only allowed 2 players from each club you can pick up a few cheeky extras before they swap clubs. Eg, last year you could have had 4 Villa players if you were entered early enough to snap up Dunne/Warnock cheaply before they moved. There may be a bit of that again this season so keep an eye on stuff

Other than that the way I see it is it's all about goals and assists, usual suspects generally come up trumps. Don't worry about yellow cards and missed pens as they don't count, try to keep your formation flexible and keep some spare cash if possible but that isn't easy from my first efforts  . You'll need a load of cheapies as the budget's pretty tough, cheap defenders can sting you as they can only let in 1 goal before going backwards. There's plenty of cheap midfielders but realistically you do well to get 20 points from them. Try to play it safe at the back but one valid tactic is to pick the odd cheap keeper/defender, just make sure you bench them at the right time!

Is it worth paying for the extra packages?

Thanks, NM. With no captain/starman, no penalties for cards, no appearance points except for defenders, and goals counting same as clean sheets, seems that the overall scoring will be more bunched?

Yeah it's a low scoring game, mostly thanks to the lack of appearance points. I take 18-20 as a good benchmark score most weeks.

As you say defenders do get an appearance point , but it's effectively there just to counter the first goal conceded i.e. a 1-0 defeat scores 0 instead of -1. Somtimes it will act as a part clean sheet but since they need to play 45 minutes to get it it doesn't happen often.

Personally I have never but obviously some people do. I think there's 3 main things you get:
1) Live points updating over the weekend, instead of waiting for Sunday night for all the points to be calculated
2) Some kind of personalised update emails or texts
3) Extra prize money

Number 3 would be the only reason I'd consider it, but the only prizes it increases are MOTW and MOTM which I'm not especially interested in - plus the chance of winning the 'gold and silver championship' prize.

Goals counted the same as clean sheets in TFFO too (5 each)! Anyhow, yes the scoring will be more bunched in absolute terms, but not at all in relative terms. Typical TFFO week scores would be 50-100, typical OFL week scores are about 5-25. That's because of the lack of appearance points. In TFFO you had a 'base' of 30-35 points each weekend, that you were virtually guaranteed for your players simply playing and doing nothing. Here that 'base' is zero!

I’d say so, as said it's a very low scoring game in comparison to TFFO. Personally I think you need a steady stream of points from all over your team rather than just packing in the big hitters. Usual story with transfers, try not to tinker the enablers and use the subs where it matters, you’ve got plenty to play with. I’ve played 2 seasons and both were really different, the first I remember benefitting from a load of big 4 defenders who all scored well while there were no standout strikers, I think Vidic was one of the top scorers with 70+ points and most of the midfielders were a waste of space. Then last year it didn’t really happen in defence and it was better to have a load of mid range Dunne/Corluka type players at the back and spend the money on the big boys up top and Fab/Lamps. This season it’ll probably be completely different again!

Wasn't it 4 for a clean sheet on TFFO? Anyway, who cares now!

Alright technically yes  , but the difference between a CS and conceding one was 5 points (same as a goal). Here a CS to conceding one is 3 points, same as a goal.

It looks like there is a facility to set up a "Friends and Enemies" league - maybe we could set up an ex-TFFOers league? Looks like this can also be used as the base for a Cup competition as well. Any interest? Though how one actually sets this up I don't know. Still trying to work out this standard, gold and silver thing - but as a previous poster said, doesn't seem you get a lot extra for the additional outlay.

Open the main page for one of your teams and you'll see a 'Your Leagues' section below the team image, and an option to start a friends league. Choose that then enter a name and hit Create and you'll be given a PIN. Others can then search for that PIN and apply to join the league.

It looks like one of the advantages of going for the gold or silver package is that the MOTM prizes get geared up quite substantially to tidy sums. I don't target MOTM at all, but some ex-TFFOers might.

And just thinking back to the points scoring compared with TFFO, I suppose the lack of appearance points for non-defenders might at the margin mean you would be a bit less bothered about having players sitting out through injury, as rival managers couldn't just be clocking up appearance points and drawing away, but would actually need their fit players to be scoring or assisting to make the difference count.

Will probably have a go at this, did play it a couple of years ago. Must admit, I'll miss the "buzz" of selecting the right star man at the right time to gain a lot of ground.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, especially with the influx of TFFO players, but I really hope they never do this.
