Pixies - new material
So, the Pixies are releasing their first new track for 9 years. A track called 'BAGBOY'
More info:

Does sound like Kim Deal's backing vocals, making her recent exit from the band all the more frustrating/confusing.

Unmistakably the Pixies. 9 years on and the sound is very much the same.
The only odd thing is a song that is nearly 5 minutes long as I'm sure the majority of their tracks tend to be on the short side
A quick check shows that it is the second longest song they have ever recorded after "All Over The World"

Maybe they got her twin sister inIt was announced earlier this month that Kim Deal had left the band, though it sure sounds like she's on this track. (That hasn't been confirmed yet.) UPDATE: Kim Deal is not on the track, a publicist confirms. Frank Black collaborator Jeremy Dubs played bass, and Joey Santiago, David Lovering, and Dubs did the backing vocals.

Funny how the mind plays tricks. Listening to it again without thinking it's her, and you kind of hear it differently.
Maybe she did do it, but just wants to distance herself from it now she's heard the finished song!

Re: Pixies - new material
They released a new 4 track EP the other week. Was £3.99 from their website to download in FLAC or some other high spec version. £3.59 on Amazon for the diluted MP3.
Haven't bought it yet but loved Bagboy and will see how good they sound on Jools.

Here's something to make many of us feel old - the 25-year anniversary edition of Doolittle:
http://pixies.tmstor.es/cart/product.php?id=19301" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Still remember getting home to stick that on the turntable, and 'Debaser' sounding better than anything I'd ever heard before. It was so good that I had to listen to it about another 5 times, making me late for my shop job at the local newsagent's, for which I got a bollocking from the manager. Sadly, that was about as rock'n'roll as it ever got...

Re: Pixies - new material
25 years
Doesn't make me feel quite as old as seeing the 35 year edition of One Step Beyond out this week.
I remember borrowing my mate's copy and recording it using a microphone on a mono 'cassette recorder' Fitted nicely on a C90 with The Specials on the other side.
Was slightly more advanced 10 years later but still a C90 from borrowed mate's copy (now CD) with Doolittle on the reverse side of Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim
.....and we slag off today's yoof for illegal downloads

Re: Pixies - new material
Almost bought tickets for the OCS 20th anniversary tour.
I remember buying a 20th anniversary re-release of Dark Side of the Moon as a youngster/teenager... Now seems like every month an album from my formative time is hitting a significant age. Where does the time go #turningintomydad

Re: Pixies - new material
6 music's Music News slot would be a barren wasteland if they didn't have stories about musicians from previous decades rehashing their back catalogue or going back to the studio to record (not) some of the best new material they've done in years.
That said, I did like Indie Cindy.

I borrowed it off a mate. Put it on a C90 with Doolittle on the other side. Must have been a bit less than 30 years. The musical grapevine was slower in the sticks.....

Re: Pixies - new material
Great version of Gouge Away from the 6 music live room on youtube. Doolittle 30 years old as well now
Opened with this in Leeds, with the long building intro from this version. Hearing that bass line coming out of the darkness, then building as the lights came up was a fantastic way to start a gig.
Quite perversely, after opening with one of their best songs their encore was a new one - Daniel Boone (a great track, but only released a couple of days before the gig )
really liking Beneath the Eyrie as well.

Re: Pixies - new material
And Head Carrier was 3 a few days ago.
more sadly, Kim Shattuck, the bass player that came in to fill Kim Deal's boots, passed away yesterday after a 2 year battle with ALS.
horrible disease really (although I guess most are to be honest). No known cause, not even hereditary in most cases. To see the effect it has on athletes like JoostVdV and Doddie Weir is heartbreaking. One of my old rugby teammates, one of the best players in the team, played England Colts, went on to join top tier club, died of it a few years back at 45. really tough to see someone so strong and fit go downhill so fast.

Re: Pixies - new material
That is sad news. I didn't know she was ill (was it why she left the Pixies?). She did a Brilliant Kim D fill in / impression. In fact I thought it was a con at first because the vocals seemed identical on the first tracks she was on and so it must be Kim D (trick or refusing to be creditted)

I think Black Francis sacked her for stage diving. By text.
He never was one for words. Broke up the band by fax, allegedly

New song coming out in October. Hear Me Out, with a cover of the fantastic Mambo Sun (T Rex) on the b side.
from the Eyrie sessions though I think so maybe not a sign of a new album. looking forward to hearing Mambo Sun though

Re: Pixies - new material
... and how many (few!) bands have arrived with a similar impact in those 34 years?
Doubt there are even 10 who would even have the cheek to seriously raise a hand.
Modern life/music is rubbish.
