Are you suggesting that I simply guessed the date and so it really did need confirmation.

Is there going to be a Guardian Euro 2016 booklet? I always look out for the World Cup one, but think there have been occasions they haven't done one for the Euros, can't remember if they did for 2012.

Plural - sorry Rick.

But if just one date would suffice, it's June 2nd.
Thanks for that Striker and Sam.

English never was my strong suite. Got many a poke in the ribs from my old English teacher to prove the point.

If it wasn't for the spell checker that would be a hell of a lot more to point out I can tell you.

The Racing Post preview will be vital reading, if only to ascertain the lays of the tournament.
Just take Dietmar Hamann's advice - and lay against it.
His recent RP gems included Soldado to be top Premier scorer, Man United to win the league, and tipping Liverpool to win the Europa League decider.
My favourite though is his slating of Ranieri last year as he tipped Leicester for the drop!

Note to self - get out at lunchtime Thursday.

Last time my newspaper deliverer failed to fulfil my one off order on the basis that he didn't receive all the additional copies that he'd ordered so I had to get up off my backside and go searching for one. This time I've ordered two to minimise the chance that I don't get any, and if I actually get two, I'm sure that I'll find a use for both.

Dieter Hamman is certainly pretty useless, but so are most other pundits. If they were worth reading they wouldn't need to work. Actually I reckon that ignoring them altogether is a better strategy than laying their tips. Occasionally they get something right.

The RP preview is essential as a reference rather than as a read, which I often don't bother with, but the stats summary on a single team page together with bookies odds relating to that team is a godsend.

Couldn't agree more. Over the years I have spent a fortune on glossy magazines previewing tournaments, only to find then inadequate, hardy any stats, not up to date ect. None of them have ever been as comprehensive and as up to date as the Racing Post supplement.

Their Suggested starting line ups are as good as anyone's normally as well.

My local newspaper shop will almost certainly be out of these tomorrow, bu luckily live quite close to a Martins, which is near two bookies. Can always get a copy there.

Many thanks Sam.

I'll be burning to a cinder and topping up my beer belly in Spain when this comes out. What's the best way to get this? Can I download it as a single copy the day it comes out here?

Cheers in advance.

Yes, you can buy and download Racing Post online any day: http://shop1.racingpost.com/category-s/1829.htm

Paper version is more practical, however, as 72 pages may prove difficult to navigate; for example, when reviewing each club's player stats.

If local newsagent can't keep or deliver copy, try RP's helpful customer sales telephone service (as Striker has suggested in past): 01933 304 858.
Newspaper should be in letter box on next or by second working day.

Although I've already noted several very good and some really silly player comments by fellow Fisoers in recent weeks, the RP Big Kick Off hitting my doormat on Wednesday morning marks the start of my fantasy season. :D

How accurate are these usually? Is it a ‘lazy’ expected starting XI or is it pretty in depth?

For example, I’m guessing they might base it on the last couple of years of starting XIs so for England would have Hart in goal (which we know won’t be the case... and probably not unique to England). So the fact they have a book published, it’s been a while in the making (and won’t be using confirmed squads etc).

I spoke to one of the blokes who wrote the book. It doesn’t have starting XI he said as was too hard to predict when they did the book. Hopefully the pull out will have them sure it did last time.

I bought the book

It’s really good. I like the way the information is gathered with a betting angle, which you can then apply to the fantasy footy.

Even looks at how many miles teams are travelling, a minor consideration maybe, but interesting nonetheless.

It has the full listing of squad players and their appearances with goals and cards, then sectioned off qualifying campaign data the same.

In terms of predicted line ups it is impossible without some kind of qualification of the basis used.

The detail that has gone into the book, I’d suggest would make for a decent attempt at predicted line ups in an updated pull out.

Might buy it. For the sake of a tenner, saves me trawling through various football websites trying to find out the data and piece it together myself.

I got the 2014 book.

They tipped Fred to win the Golden Boot.

That said, I've ordered it again. Some useful info in there for fantasy football and the odd flutter.

World Cup: two useful previews

1. Racing Post 2018 World Cup Pullout will be published with the paper on Thursday 7 June.
It includes stat-packed team profiles; tournament verdict and wallchart.

Image

2. Guardian Experts' 100-page World Cup Guide is issued with the newspaper on Saturday 9 June.
It's produced in collaboration with media outlets from around the world and includes
- guide to all 736 players https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng ... goals-caps
- tactics, key players and expert predictions for each nation, with starting line-up prediction:
eg Brazil https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... e-coutinho

@ Striker: don't know! Seems a lot of data to cram into 100-page magazine.
Perhaps team line-up predictions will be separated for display online* and in the newspaper?

* To date, just 16 nations have been covered (two per day since 30 May):
https://www.theguardian.com/football/se ... ts-network

Will post here when The Guardian pops through letterbox this Sat.

In follow up:
Today's Guardian 100-page World Cup Guide is a good read.
But mag isn't first choice for FF fans looking for player stats, team line-up, expert predictions, etc.
For that see Guardian online:
https://www.theguardian.com/football/se ... ts-network
https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng ... goals-caps

Within print media, last Thursday's Racing Post pullout remains the leading publication for such info.

Can’t find the racing post guide in the three shops I tried this morning.

Avoid the Times 64-page pull out. Might as well have bought Shoot.
