International break music thingy.

Post by Spinynorman »

Roll up, roll up. It's the (not so) great FISO lets do a music list thingy while there is no fantasy football happening type thread! :D

We've been there and done it all before but it's been a while and there are new artists out there and new people on the board so why not give it another go.

It is the international break after all.

So then what are your following:

Top 5 favourite bands: (including duo's)

Top 5 favourite solo artists: (including artists doing stuff on their own all by themselves with nobody with them)

Top 5 favourite singles: (formats other than 7" inch vinyl are allowed as long as it was released as being singles chart eligible)

Top 5 favourite albums: (whilst frowned upon stuff other than prog will be allowed)

Top 5 all time greatest gigs: (appearances as part of a multiple line up or festival are okay)

Impossible to narrow down of course and your choices may be different the day after you make them but it's surely easier to do than navigating that awkward flange, deciding on when to wild card or working out how SDT transfers and price rises work. :?

If you just want to list them then that's fine but keeping them in the above order would be good. Do one section at a time if you want, I probably will. Pontificate, justify and wax lyrically if you wish as we no doubt would all like to read about your thoughts and feelings on all things musical or failing that you can always talk about some some modern dancey rappy stuff. :P

So take off those headphones, put down that Dictaphone, pause your cassette, eject that 8-track, shuffle the mp3, mute the Blu-ray or simply lift the stylus off the record and get typing.

This of course may not be a simple task as we all know there is more music than there really is.

Incidentally anybody using The AA Route Finder to compile their list will awarded a Grammy.

Top 5 albums:

The Waterboys - A Pagan Place
Nick Cave & Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads
Radiohead - The Bends
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
REM - Document
with apologies to Specials, U2 debut albums, PJ Harvey and many others including Pixies (Doolittle or Surfer Rosa - which day do you ask on?)

PS was the document in question an AA Road Atlas?

Edit because I only typed 4 in !

When it comes to bands my top 5 today would be:

Yes
The Beatles
Jethro Tull
National Health
REM

Yes and The Beatles would always be in there and National Health would often alternate with Hatfield And The North, Gong, Soft Machine and all things Canterbury. :)

No room for the band who I have the most albums of which is Fairport Convention, 43 at the last count!

Attempt 2. I can remember most of my choices so here goes.
This selection will date me more accurately than carbon dating technology.

5 Bands
Pink Floyd.
The stranglers.
The Beatles.
Fleetwood Mac.
Lynyrd Skynyrd.

5 Solo Artists.
David Bowie.
Tom Petty
Prince.
Joe walsh.
Stevie Nicks
5 singles
Life's been good so far. Joe Walsh. I play this a lot.
Space oddity. David Bowie.
Free bird. Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I wont back down. Tom Petty.
Tusk. Fleetwood Mac.

5 Albums
Dark side of the moon. Pink Floyd. I play tracks from this weekly and the whole album in its entirety at least once a year when the wife is out for the evening.
Sergeant Pepper's lonely hearts club band. The beatles ( could have picked many Beatles albums but this is what I was playing this week on the flight from Dubai to Heathrow.
Second helpings. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Played regularly in my youth and I have just got back into it as an album recently. Give me back my bullets would be just as memorable and enjoyable.
Rumours. Fleetwood Mac. Just a good album that has stood the test of time for me.
I like ELO, The Who, The Stranglers, Genesis, U2, ACDC and many more but I will pick Hotel California as Album 5 by the Eagles.
The traveling wilburys gets played a lot in my workshop and on another day I would pick a single and album from them.

Gigs I will have to think about and come back to you.

I was at that one and was indeed very good. We went by coach and it took us about 4 hours to get off the car park after the gig.

I was at that one and was rubbish indeed! I usually get to the front(ish) at gigs but this time I watched it from what seemed like the next county due to the folks I was with. Not ideal....

Never really like Kate Bush but nowadays every time I hear one of hers it grabs my attention (unless it is Wuthering Heights (again)). 6 Music played Army Dreamers yesterday which I hadn't heard in years. Was quite upset when I got home before the track finished and I turned the car radio off.

I'll give it some pondering, as nowt much to tax my Brain Cell, beyond watching FPL price rises for my WC

Top 5 favourite bands: (including duo's)
Carpenters, I still can't listen to them without weeping: and they make Joy Division sound like Steps

Top 5 favourite solo artists: (including artists doing stuff on their own all by themselves with nobody with them)
Cope, as it will save a band place, and his solo stuff hits some amazing heights, and deep, deep troughs
Scott (Walker) despite the "Tribute" concert being rather painful, and his later\recent "weird" stuff is quite something in an Aural Performance Art kinda way. Also he sounds like a dead sweet person in interviews.....
Tom Waits, no reason needed on FISO?

Top 5 favourite singles: (formats other than 7" inch vinyl are allowed as long as it was released as being singles chart eligible)
Damn, no C's can F off

Top 5 favourite albums: (whilst frowned upon stuff other than prog will be allowed)
Blimey...
Stone Roses
Nevermind the Bollocks
Blackstar - not a huge Bowie fan, well not really at all - but this is a brilliant adieu to the World

Top 5 all time greatest gigs: (appearances as part of a multiple line up or festival are okay)
Cope: not sure which one of two yet
Waterboys 1985\6
Christians or House of Love from just before they "broke"
Ramones or Buzzcocks

That's my last functioning Brain Cell exhausted, as I'll try not to duplicate artists....

Saw a couple of hometwon gigs in Liverpool - definitely on that list.

Gigs-
Glastonbury 99 - the only time I went and it was mostly sunny, has to be done at least once
Waterboys (Simple Minds/Lloyd Cole/BAD) - Milton Keynes 86 - 85 might have made it (U2/REM/Ramones/Bragg) but it pissed down!
Iggy Pop - Manchester International 2 about 87 or 88 - so much energy
Icicle Works - Liverpool late 80s (twice)
The Fleadh - several times, Finsbury Park, always a great day (good craic and all that)

Not a huge Bunnymen fan, but they rocked "Live in Liverpool", even when touring with later albums like Ocean Rain.

Saw the Bunnymen at the Birmingham Odeon on the Ocean Rain tour and they were phenomenal.

Yep, so very much better live.... and in Liverpool the whole place was bouncing as they "punked" it up.

Shame that he was as erm.... erm deluded in real life: but not as annoying as Wylie, which isn't saying much.
