Had an interview this week and.... didn't get the job. BUT, they said that had it not been for the fact that the successful candidate had more technical experience than me, they would have selected me (so I was basically in the final two). In fact, they said I had the best CV and performed the best in interview!

So there you have it, Richt is the eff nuts at CV's, officially :D :D

I suppose I could be all angry and pissed off, but actually I'm now even more motivated. I feel it's a matter of time trather han luck, and that is a good feeling. Thanks to everyone, and of course, Richt especially.

Will let you know any more developments, hopefully there won't be many more if you get my drift.
Thanks for the thanks Tac. Well done on your almost success. Glad my input was of use.

Of course we all know that you didn't get this job as your dream job is just around the corner :)

Right, I`m getting petty now, but it really should be.

That's probably what really did it for me.

Past and present tense is important to me, as an Employer.

Be warned.

Anyway, doing some application forms where you need to be more expansive, the old dear thinks I should mention that I've help take notes on behalf of people facing disciplinary procedures, e.g. note taking skills, potential to learn shorthand.

Bad idea? Can't help but to think you'd be more or less suggesting that you're a trouble maker.

It's never a bad idea to put something that's a little "out of the ordinary", so I would say yes, put it on.

Interesting to see our very own Ed was up to no good adding to his CV on question 2.

DODGY bustard.

David Edmondson, chief executive of Radio Shack, dismissed in 2006 after the company discovered he'd falsely added a bachelor of science degree to his CV when he joined 12 years earlier.

Just completed an online application for a graduate scheme, was able to copy the question onto a text file for your collective perusal. Won't say who the company was, but the sector is recruitment:

Very annoyed, was in the process of completing on application for an NHS job in admin, was posted up on Monday (20th). I'd planned to finish my application now, only to find that it was already closed for applications (I think the original closing date was first week of March)!!! Called them to ask why, and they said that they close vacancies to applicants when they reach a certain limit of applications. So there you go.

Mad way of doing it, surely they'd have known that was going to happen and should have given the closing as Thursday or Friday.

Question - Is it worth doing this course: https://shop.sage.co.uk/payrollworkbooks.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;?

I've noticed there are a lot of payroll roles knocking about, and my sister did the Accounts one and said it was fairly straightforward. I'd hope that, even for vacancies which don't require this, the fact I'm doing further training in my own time will be looked favourably upon compared to other candidates, is that right?

Really want to finally make the break this new year, frankly I'm a bit embarrassed I've been trying to get out this long

Any relevant, reputable additional training qualifications will help.

Just try not to junk up your CV with lots of irrelevant ones (you can pick and choose which you include as per the job spec - but "50m swimming certificate" proabably isn't going to help unless you're applying to be a lifeguard at the local lido )

LOL, that was the joke doing the rounds in my house re. the swimming badges.

I've decided against it for now and see whether anything develops between now and the end of February. I have an interview soon, so we'll see how that goes, but getting an interview IMO is the hardest bit of the process.

Awful news this evening - we're being shut down due to unsustainable volumes.

Should have seen it coming really but I guess you live day to day not seeing the bigger picture.

If I'm not let go earlier they are saying end of March looks like the end so I have plenty of time to find something yet. Bit of a shock, first time for me, but I feel confident and frankly I won't be in a terrible position unlike others there where you have both parents looking at redundancy, someone already says they'll probably lose their home.

Sorry to hear that Tac. Something will come up now you've got a great CV.

Hadn't seen this thread before and reading through it came across this...
Patrician wrote:6) Do include significant out of work activity (charity work, volunteer work etc) if you think the company would appreciate a well rounded character, but skip your hobbies. Mostly, nobody gives a shit if you like reading, walking and fantasy football.
Disagree significantly. I may not work in recruitment, but I hire (which people in recruitment, ironically, generally don't).

The recruitment people make sure the person is qualified for the job and has some kind of relevant experience.

When it comes to shortlisting, it's down to my assessment of their experience and possible cultural fit with me and/or the team. If you're sporty... I say put it down.

Isn't that something you assess at the interview?

Not asking directly if they're into x, y or z... But whether you think they'll suit you/the team?

Whenever I read 'I like football, reading, and socialising' it's just the most bland, throwaway statement there is. It's like miss world hoping for world peace.

Totally disagree, I recruit people as part of my role and there is nothing worse than someone saying I am into walking, countryside activities, reading, etc. Adds nothing to their application and looks like they just copied a CV from google.

Also went through redundancy in 2011 & 2013 and have had CV review provided by external companies and they have all given the same feedback. Do not include out of work activities unless it is related to the role.

Quick question - I would obviously like personal reference from two-three people at the company, is it normal to ask for them to write one for me to keep myself? I don't think it's fair for me to potentially keep having new jobs asking them for personal references when they are themselves trying to get a job.

In my experience, the application forms for most roles will have space to enter the contact details for referees. I guess they want to check for themselves :-)

Good luck Taca

PS Re the CV thing, add something interesting and specific rather than the bland 'enjoy walking, reading and sports'. Say you are a member of a running club, hold the world record for crushing walnuts or whatever

If you're on linkedin and so are your current bosses you could ask them if instead of being badgered for references in their new roles (wherever they end up) if they would mind writing a reference on there?

I haven't logged into linkedin for years now but I seem to remember there was a facility for that? Also if you're out there looking for work it's not the worst place in the world to get active on if you're not already...
