I've been away from this thread for 18 months due to plantar fasciitis, dodgy knees and laziness. But I'm back with a 31 minute run at an extremely packed course. Took 30 secs just to cross the start line!

How many runners? I was talking to someone from my original home course (Chelmsford) and they said they get 700 nowadays!

Born to run will explain it's all down to your trainers. The more expensive the trainers the higher the incidence of injury, according to (at least) one study. You should fashion a sandal out of an old car tyre.

My trainers are very cheap! The PF actually occurred at a gig, although PR and being on my feet all day at work probably increased my risk factor.

When I started running I bought a cheap random pair of running shoes and had several little niggly injuries. As I started running more I got my feet and gait measured at Sweat Shop and bought a better par of shoes and have had less injuries ever since. I always put it down to fully developing my running muscles reducing my injuries but could it have been the better quality shoes (the reverse of the Born To Run theory)???

Had a few back muscle problems over the last 18 months which I don't think are running related. Running makes it worse but not much - it is more that they hinder/stop my running.

(have googled Born To Run and can't find it cheap anywhere - except the audiobook version read by B. Springsteen)

Back in action yesterday after several weeks away due to holidays and foreign travel etc.
It's been quite stressful at work in April and particularly May, so I've put on a bit of timber  As a result, I decided just to potter off at a comfortable pace and not do my usual push for a PB. Came round in just under 26 minutes so nearly 3 minutes slower than my previous effort - but I could get home with my breath intact rather than gasping at the finish line as usual

Another run next weekend I hope before two more enforced absences....then the summer will see me undergo operation sub-23

No pb for me either but I did knock nearly 3 mins off my best time on a cross-country course :D

Anyone seen this? Parkruns listed by elevation - could be interesting to compare times on courses and to prepare for courses you've not been to before.

My local is 321st (lowest) of 451. Not sure I totally trust it as Maldon Prom (clue in name) is only 90th!

Would be better with an elevation CHANGE list so we could see the hilliest.

I think it is listed by elevation change as the ones on the later pages are noticeably hillier than the first.

Not sure :? There is certainly more bumpiness on the later ones but, if the vertical scale is right then my local one (Keswick, 321st) goes up and down more (taking up more column inches) than those around it in the table.

Also looked at one of my previous local courses, Great Notley, that had a single big hill in the middle and the line doesn't include that, probably due to the inaccuracy of the source data collection (it is a man made, stand alone, steep but small domed hill with a small footprint).

Some of those on the later pages look horrible. At least mine goes up to start with giving us a downhill return.

So there are 451 British parkruns. 9 down, 442 to go for me! Did my 9th a couple of weeks back, my first outside Essex (where I used to live) or Cumbria (where I now live) being in Cambridgeshire (where I grew up) - although I can't find that one in the list of 451 :? EDIT - Parkrun website says there are now 460. Shame there aren't any in southern Scotland or I could go international!

Saw that someone is doing a charity run soon. Think it is 50 parkruns in a week, all the north west ones. EDIT - Here it is, 50 in 6 days: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundrai ... kylegsruns

I ran the Cambridge parkrun for the first time today. I enjoyed it and thought it was really well organised, but I don't think it is the full 5km. Most of the Strava times I've seen show something in the 4.7km-4.9km range, so although it looks like I got my best time today it was actually a slower pace than previous runs (and I'm fairly sure it wasn't my quickest run). Even the Strava segment is only 4.8km: https://www.strava.com/segments/2001861

The last couple of times I've done Cambridge parkrun the Run Director's briefing has been to call out the idiots pushing and intimidating their way past lapped athletes the previous week. Easy to see how collisions happen on that course but hopefully it's calmed down a bit

I saw a different elevation profile study on a Facebook group which didn't make any sense as York was way down. Considering it's the service track inside a completely flat oval horse racing course this list looks a bit more realistic.

Lanhydrock in last place 8-) Thoroughly recommended though for anyone in Cornwall for their summer holidays.

Ridiculous how there is only one parkrun in Cambridge - and that is actually out in Milton. No wonder it is overcrowded.

I know it's only 2 seconds knocked of my PB but I haven't got near to that time since October 2015 so I'm absolutely delighted. Thought the sub 30 mins. was out of reach after two pulled muscle injuries but it's now back on the agenda!

At the same Park Run my grandson Reggie (Mini Digsby 2 did a PB for the Orpington course knocking an incredible 47 seconds off by doing a time of 28:30 - very impressive Reggie  His PB stays at 28.10 (Bromley Park Run)

Well played bd.

I actually skipped today, trying to rest a couple of lingering muscle injuries.

Was two years ago this week that I set my PB at my local course (beaten overall PB since but not this one). Wasn't my home course then though as I was a tourist, coming up here to view the house I now live in. Also Mrs m's birthday so quite a big day all in all!

I haven't progressed any since May but I've been focusing on distance work in preparation for a marathon in October but I've been happy enough getting several low 24s. I'm getting some race prep in today doing a local 10k and hoping to get under 50mins for the first time ever.

I found my matathon training really helped my 5k times initially as the distance became 'easy' then they tailed off slightly as I pushed up my distances. Actually set my PB a couple of months AFTER my marathon when I'd stopped the longer distances but still had sufficient fitness for 5k to be easy.

The best tip I followed was to vary my trainings runs to include some speed work. Jog 2 minutes, fast 1 minute, jog 2 minutes, fast 1 minute etc.

Good luck with the 10k. 50 minutes is tough. I've never done any easy course so that is my excuse for a PB of 51:30. There is a simple calculator on a website (runners world?) that estimates your time for 10k or a marathon if you put in your 5k time. 50 minutes sounds about right for you then a sub 4hr marathon!

Go to your local Sweat Shop if you have one. They will measure your gait (or whatever it is called) and give you some shoes to suit you. Usually have a few on offer so should be able to get a good pair without breaking the bank.

That's what I did then I bought a 2nd identical pair a few months later when on sale and kept them til my 1st pair fell apart. They don't make that model any more so I'm hoping they hold together a bit longer....

PS They used to do a discount for Parkrunners - google.

Fit and comfort first, then consider ventilation. All my shoes are comfortable and I don't notice them while running. Then for me light weight, and suitability for where you run. Many popular shoes are updated yearly, previous versions can be well priced.

I started with 10.5oz clearance Reeboks. My local gunpowder parkrun has loose gravel which sticks in the tread. I read reviews and short listed some lighter shoes, tried in Sweatshop, I was happy with 3 pairs, opted for the cheapest New Balance Zante V1 8.5oz with gravel friendly tread. By the time I decided to buy same again they were out of stock in UK, bought from Amazon US. I recently bought NB Gobi, "light trail" equivalent of Zante V2 stiffer with more tread, for grass courses.
