Parkrun/5k

Post by Mr Green »

Not quite a Parkrun, but ran my second organised 5k today - in Bushey, Herts.

Finished 14th out of 131 (fourth in the "male veterans" category) in a chip time of 22:11 (23:46 last year), but alas, had to be treated by paramedics after the race as they said, "You don't look good," as I sprinted - er, stumbled - across the line. They sent the results (very high (irregular) pulse, low blood pressure, low saturation (oxygen)) to a cardiologist, who replied immediately suspecting exercise induced asthma - I've always really struggled for breath during/after running, but never did anything about it as I thought it was normal if you push yourself.

Hence, a visit to the doctors beckons.

I guess a 10k is out of the question, then...

But if you can do a 10k then a 5k is a doddle!

Think I would look a little less than 'not good' if I did a 5k in 22:11....

Huffing and Puffing

Fair point...it's just getting up to 10k that's the problem, irrespective of the pace.

However, the doctor confirmed today that I am indeed an asthmatic after failing the "puff test" and am now in possession of two ventilators - wish I'd been diagnosed a long time ago...

Wonder if it'll have a positive effect on my running - I'm not sure the missus wants me to find out!

Armed with new lightweight shoes with ungrooved tread I picked up no gravel and felt a good foot roll, comfortable and coolish in a vest in the heat, smashed my PB at Gunpowder, 28:06...mid 27 could be possible next time I return to Hackney Marshes. 8-) I have 4 weeks off for cricket and beach holiday / barefoot runs. 8-)

Beach training runs fuelled by all inclusive lager and wine paid off. After some nice Hobgoblin last night, visited Pymmes and did 27:53. 8-)

I just returned from a Florida trip. The climate suited my muscles and achilleses. I ran twice at Clermont which starts at 7:30am due to heat and humidity...the second time I observed local custom and ran topless. 2 lakeside training runs and I was well prepared for today. Perfect conditions at Gunpowder and I ran a nice PB 27:44. 8-)

Nice one Brightwater - congrats.
I did my 50th Park Run today. 32 minutes may not sound to impressive but at least I'm 2 stone (28 lbs) lighter thanks to the running. I will beat that 30 minute barrier! :D

Not a parkrun but yesterday I joined the group of mad fools who have completed a marathon. I was struggling with my ankle from about the three mile mark so hobbled in after about 5:09 so nothing like what I wanted but I finished and I'm happy for that.

Brilliant stuff Mystery, still faster than me!

Are you going to do another or, like me, are you saying one is enough??

I will do my local half marathon in April/May I think but that will be my limit due to an ageing body. Not done over 6 miles since my Marathon in April.

Wow 2 stone!

I have lost only a couple of pounds, but half my beer gut has moved to my chest.

I had said it will be my only one, but I soon stretched that to include next year's here (to join my wife who is running it) and London whenever I get in through the ballot.

First parkrun in over 9 months for me today, due to a combination of injury, footwear mishaps and inefficiency

25:53 (not helped by a VERY slow start - there's previously been 100-120 runners but today there were 180!) and so a minute off my PB. Thought I'd probably done it in 27 mins though so better than I thought! Kept to a steady pace and didn't force it so hopefully the time can start dropping again as I get back into it.

Keep it going - no more excuses!

You actually just logged a faster time than me today but I did start about a minute after everyone else and then, before I caught the tail runner and due to our rush-induced lack of the usual 'pre-match ritual', it was time to get the doggy bags out. Leisurely overtaking the slow runners is a great way to start the weekend, especially as it was lovely and sunny if a tad ****ing freezing - had the first snow of the winter last night (OK only seems to have been at 2500ft+ but it still counts if I can see it!)

Think I have only missed 4 parkruns this year and they have all been due to doing something else active instead (like running a marathon that weekend). A few as tail runner and/or accompanying Mrs m when I had a bad back - they all count!

EDIT - just realised this weekend marks 3 years since my Parkrun debut. 139 runs later I'm still going.

3 years ago, murf wrote:We finally made our debut today.

I didn't feel that good (more energy than body - I still blame the early start) and stopped for a brief walk 4 times but got better as the run went on. Also not easy running with a dog when there are so many people on quite narrow paths. I deliberately started slowly to keep out of harm's way and find it hard to run as slowly as maybe I should (esecially with a keen dog egging me on!) so was generally overtaking people (except when walking!) so know I could go much quicker if fitter.

They had 'pacers' today and I was a bit miffed when I realised that was happening and the bloke with '32' on his vest was a fair way ahead of me. Overtook him in the last km and finished in:

31:50, 204th place

I was targetting 30 minutes but that was based on 10 minute mile pace for 3miles. 5km is actually just overout 3.1 miles so a proper target is 31:06. Next week/time....

So, having bruised a foot last week playing 5-a-side now that we've started that up at work, I wasn't sure if I'd run. My Mrs told me I was looking for an excuse not to run, so clearly I took the challenge!

A bit late leaving the house so my warm-up and stretching consisted basically of trotting down to the start line. A lovely sunny day if a tad chilly so layering was the order of the day. Lots of guest runners from a local club which meant another slow start. Felt quite perky as I picked my way up the field - and less perky into the second half. A bit of mental motivation inspired a kick for home, which was greeted by the starter/finisher with a quip about my gritted teeth not being worth it

I was 9 seconds faster than a fortnight ago so round in 25:44 and still some 51 seconds off my best. Funnily enough, I was 44th today compared to 75th 2 weeks ago when I was slower.... I haven't been in my weekly swim habit for many moons now, which I think definitely helped my stamina. First stop is a new PB and then cracking the sub-24 minute mark.

No idea how I've done that today. 24 seconds shaved off my PB and 1:15 faster than last week. I'm even wondering if they started the timing late! Glorious day for it - sunny and cold enough not to want to hang around, clearly! I didn't think my pace was that great but perhaps I judge too much by other runners around me and last week was a slowish group compared to today I think. I was a bit miffed at one point on the last stretch when a guy slipstreamed behind me for what felt like 2-3 minutes. I felt like turning round and asking him if he wanted to go at the front for a change!

Next targets - Mystery and sub 24 mins.

Quality time and progress. You still have my PB as a big carrot ahead!.

I think the frozen conditions help a bit as you aren't putting as much effort in each time you push off. I certainly go quicker on tarmac courses than gravel and grass ones. Mind you I took it easy on our wooden bridges today even though they had been gritted.

25:38 for me today with the caveats that we started 20s late and it is a tough course!

Doing a 10k next week. Was going to doing it last year til Storm Desmond swept in so have to go back and finally claim the xmas pudding finishing reward! The sun and frost are a real improvement on last tear's weather!

I did wonder about that Murf - has to be a benefit being on firmer ground compared to the mud that a fair bit of the path was covered in last week.

I was toying with a 10k being held locally on traffic-free roads next Sunday but might just stick to Parkrun, it is after all only 3 weeks back-to-back I've done after several months of sloth. It is lovely running on conditions like today's really.

We've had a park run in our town for around 3 years but despite living less than a mile from the start I've never given it a go until yesterday when I decided to get up and drag my daughter around the course with me. Was hoping for a sub 30 for my first effort and so was delighted to see that I ended up with a 29:11 when I logged in to check the result. I thoroughly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and the camaraderie amongst the runners. I'm definitely looking forward to doing it again.

Good stuff Rust. You must be fairly fit if you can do a sub 30 with no preparation!

Work your way up the FISO allcomers list but don't overtake me just yet!

PS You probably know but you can set up to receive text and e-mail notifications so you don't need to 'log in' to see your time etc.

Yes fairly fit but also fairly fat, so no danger of me breaking 24 minutes any time soon or ever in fact. 8-)

Keep plugging away and, if you are anything like me, you will soon be addicted to chipping time off that PB - and overtaking FISOers on the list (you are currently 20th I think). My first 2 runs were over 30 minutes but it only took 15 months(!) to get under 24....

I've also lost a lot of lard since I took up running. I was even looking positively anorexic when I was doing my marathon training earlier this year and dipped below 10 stone for a while. A healthier 10st 5lbs now.

Another 6 seconds shaved off my PB :D Every one of them hard-earned after a week that included the office Xmas party and about a billion calories in both solid and liquid form. With the loop our course takes, I thought I was a bit faster given where I first crossed the usual leaders, but didn't know if I'd hung on. Nice to close off my Parkrun year with a PB as I can't do next week and doubt I'll be able to do NYE.

Good stuff el p.

Don't worry about xmas eve and new year's eve as many parkruns are holding extra ones on xmas day and new year's day!

I'm nursing some minor injuries at the moment so am only running on Saturdays. Got some good times initially (including 52:50 on a hilly 10k) as I was less tired but felt a bit unfit yesterday. I'm doing 2 parkruns (9am and 10.30) on new year's day so that will be 3 that weekend. Hope my old bones survive....

Double Parkrun - that's how you start a new year! :D :D

3 in 2 days, not possible again til New Year 2021.

Also takes me to 50 in a year (just - as I am including Sat 2/1/16 as my 1st)

You're lucky. They haven't done Xmas or New Years Day parkruns here since it started a little over a year ago. But on the plus side, I did a 24:15 on Saturday which I was delighted about.

Our local one didn't do xmas but we had a new year one for first time. Have had 439 runners over 2 days (220 and 219). Previous record was 189 I think! Amazing how many tourists and visitors there are this time of year.

Last year I travelled to one on new years day (usually 40 mins each way but longer last year due to flood diversions) only to find it was iced off.....

Did that one (flood and ice free) today for 9am today then my local one at 10.30.

24.15. Been a while since I beat that. You'll soon overtake my PB...
