Plotting/Measuring a route
I know you can get ultra-complicated things but I am just looking for a website or Android app where I can simply trace a route on a map and it tells me how far it is. Needs to look at footpaths and random routes around fields etc not just roads.
A modern version of a map, a piece of string and a scale rule.
Any suggestions?

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
Endomondo is the best one I've ever used mate. (And I have tried quite a few).
Comes as a free app (but can upgrade to premium for a tiny fee)

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
Cancel that. I've read your post correctly now. ......
Try "mapmyrun"
You can plot a distance on the website as well as using it as a gps tracker tool thingy.

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
Thanks - just used it to plot my route but it was hard to be precise enough as the base map isn't detailed enough 'off road' so I probably 'straightlined' too much of it and didn't know how far to put my mark into open areas etc.
I was basically checking if my main dog walking route was anywhere near the length of a 5k fun run I might sign up to. I'm sure my routeis longer than the 3.5km they calculate/claim!!
Usually takes me nearly an hour (often stopping if we meet other dogs etc, excuses in early). Incorporated some periods of jogging and we did it in 38 minutes last night, which would be less than 3.5mph if that distance is right.

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
You should be able to plot the route on your phone when walking it and then upload the file to google earth.

Tbf you are probably doing further especially if your dog is anything like ours - no such thing as a straight line

She probably does 10k to my 3k. She did cheat last night by taking a shortcut across a river because there was another dog on the other side!Richt wrote:Tbf you are probably doing further especially if your dog is anything like ours - no such thing as a straight line

Endomondo or Strava for tracking a run / walk / ride
Google maps is best for plotting in advance.

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
Strava's great. You can set up measured 'segments' and it automatically tracks your time over that segment, along with anyone else who's also done the same one.
It'll tell you your overall position on that segment relative to everyone else, whether you've got a pb etc etc.
If you're the fastest you get the King of the Mountain (KOM).
I've got about 10 KOM's, but most are off road. Only 2 road ones. A short sharp climb to a pub ( ) and a longish descent in N Wales.

Downloaded Endoplasmicgoo (sp?) but didn't get to go out in the end. Didn't think pottering about in my shed would make much of a route!

Will Strava 'design a run' for me from a gps location?

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
Trialling Endomondo-
Tracked my walk (with wife & dog) on Saturday as 2.73miles in 1hr 32m 22s - but that did include stopping for my dog to play with other dogs and for me to get a haircut(!) so probably best not to read too much into that No jogging at all, just testing the app. Max speed was 15:21/mile so at least that shows there are no blips in the software.
Sunday was 2.51miles in 38:38, ave speed of 15.21 minute miles (coincidentally equal to Saturday's top speed). Looking at the graphs my jogs were anywhere from 8-10 mins/mile. Bearing in mind I 'have' to walk the first and last half miles it was really 1.5 miles in 18:57 for the main/middle section where I jog a bit / walk a bit. Was fairly impressed with myself in that I could easily start jogging again further round the route.
Not sure how it gave me a total ascent of 154ft and total descent of 123ft as I started and finished at my house!
Think I will put an official aim of 30 minutes for my 3 mile (5k) run in July. Possible?
Played 6-a-side this lunchtime, maybe I should have carried my phone and plotted my mileage!

Re: Plotting/Measuring a route
30 minutes for 3.1 miles (5k) should be easily achievable for you.
