First half of the season over

Post by mogwai »

That was it, that first half of the season 2020/21. If you had a bad season so far like me, you're maybe delighted to get a new chance for revenge right now! So you d'ont have to wait until summer for that.

Thanks to an outstanding performance, Swagat 08 is the current leader in the Championship drivers table but has only a 4 points lead on Alchim1sT. On the constructors table Ferrari 1st at the moment, AlphaTauri on 2nd place. Really an impressive half season from Swagat 08, who could improve from a near 4 mio rank in GW3 to a current 22k rank OR. He could win 2 GP so far this season.

I decided to credit 1 point for the fastest lap of the 24 Hours Nürburgring race. As I presume the 158 (-4) will not be beaten in the current monthly table, DavidLoydIsAHero will earn two points for his best score from all drivers GW1 to GW19. Please shout if you discover an error somewhere.

Interesting fact, that most of the teams has one clear leader who collects nearly or effectively all the points. Only the Brabham team (FingerPass / andybarrell 16 points both) and the Williams team (fred1266 / wahine 28/15) had a balanced team performance so far.

Until the next deadline I'll enter on the FPL-page the new scoring start from GW20 onwards.

Results for January not correct

Post by mogwai »

As I restarted the league scoring in GW20, the results for January are not shown correctly. Sorry for that!

Of course I'll post the real results next week what means I'll be first and Swagat 08 second. :D

Next season - in case there is enough interest for a next season - the half season "races" will probably not have 19 GW each but vary according to next seasons schedule and end/start at an end/beginning of a month.

Thanks mogwai, and congratulations to you and Swagat08 on the Constructors Championship.

Very happy with second. I’d say that I’m the Carlos Saint to Alchim1sT’s Leclerc. However after Monaco the real life drivers are much closer than we are. Alchim1sT has had a great season. I am just pleased to have chipped in with enough points to see us on the podium.

Well done also bossdrum. I guess that it must have felt like driving on your own at times (which probably deserves the Blahstrd it will inevitably get!)

Congrats to Bossdrum for topping the table. Happy with my fourth place overall after a slow start.

Well done to mogwai/Swagat08 for the constructors championship.

And a big thanks to mogwai for all the har work - this one must have taken a bit of effort to run!

Well it has been mainly due to Swagat 08's performance. At least I could win one "race" and contribute a little to our victory. :) But it's exactly something what sidegames make so useful in my opinion: You have the chance to win something, even when having a bad FPL season. Imagine I'd have played in a classic way only - with a 411k rank I would'nt be really happy.

Maybe next season (in case there will be a next season/enough interest etc., maybe a lot of people are scared off for participating now  ), it will be the other way around. For example you get nearly all the points, and someone else can benefit from your performance.

Hogmeister wrote: 25 May 2021, 10:04 And a big thanks to mogwai for all the har work - this one must have taken a bit of effort to run!

It was hard this year first of all because I had a quite disappointing FPL season. This - in my point of view - is really a challenge: to continue running the sidegame when being not in a good FPL-mood.

But in general I really like establishing tables etc. I'm sorry, that they look so handmade (because they are of course). The tables are easy to establish and I'm very interested to see the results. But the most of the time for running the game I lose by adjusting the tables for having a nearly sufficient layout. Further my mother tongue is not English (obviously). An English speaker could surely put easier and better written content in.

But it's my excuse to everyone who could say, running an FPL-sidegame would be a waste of time. I can tell him: "look, I can have a free English exercise occasion and fun at the same time".

Thanks Mogwai for running the competition.
I'm delighted to have won the championship, especially as you said I didn't win a race.
I had a reasonably consistent season and thankfully that paid off.

Is this still being run? Couldn't find last year's one. I am asking because I actually had a similar idea yesterday (I would say it is original, but for sure I had seen Formula One sidegame before or at least that points system used :D ) since I somehow returned to watching f1 consistently this year after long break since childhood. My idea would be similar but not literally this (in short - 20 players, 10 teams (same ones as in real), if needed can make more leagues or something; gameweeks split in qualifcation and race, points counted based on f1, qualification places giving you extra fpl points for race gw (that way imitating the starting grid in a way). But if this is already being run and also happening for 2022 then do not wanna be making 2 similar comps (also knowing how lazy I will become eventually about it :D) s0 does anyone know, maybe mogwai reads this and can comment? (would love to participate in this, if it is ongoing)

mogwai only made 4 posts since October and he declared that he is tired of Fantasy Football. Don't expect him to come here any time soon!
He also handed over the captaincy of his 5AS team.

I'm back again for the upcoming season despite I must admit, my fire for FPL is not quite the same as it was back in time atm.

I also think to keep captaincy for another season in 5AS (if they still want me) - astonishly all team members were in the league already when I registered yesterday for FPL. :D ... and they all confirmed to be in for another season.

I believe this never happened as quickly in seven years on FISO 5AS. :D

I'm really delighted to see this sidegame ongoing, thanks for running! :)

I wasn't really sure, how people liked it, when I ran this and I'm aware, there should have been some improvements from my part. But the fact, that you "took over" the idea shows to me, that it wasn't maybe that bad. And that's the best thing to me.

If I'm in for the upcoming season, I'm not sure yet, maybe yes , maby not - I thought, I'd rather have one or two reasonable seasons in FPL before playing sidegames again (except from H2H and 5AS). But if you want, we could also think about running it together in 23/24...

The sidegame is just for fun anyway, so feel free to join (we do have already full first division, but I have opened the registration for second and will see if it gathers enough interest) - viewtopic.php?t=134534

And while I have not actually even read full rules of your competition (I wanted to make it a bit different and not try to steal any ideas besides the overall concept :D ) - it did of course inspire me to do this one and hope it will be a good successor.
Regarding the running of comp part - yeah lets see how it goes after it is more established, but if there is even more interest and two more divisions then for sure I will be happy for a helping hand in the process of running it

My origin idea has been to run it in a limited version for having a kind of bargaining chip in my hands, because often discipline from the participants of sidegames is not very good, for registration on time etc. Further a limited edition helps also to increase the attractivity of the sidegame, because it makes people think "I should participate".

I also tried to offer a Formula Two division, because Formula One was full very quickly, but for Fomula Two demand has been very low. Probably everyone wanted to compete in Formula One.

The rules of my Formula One sidegame were very simple:
Monthly races, Formula One-Point system (plus highest monthly score = fastest lap), Team table. There have been two long distance races for a half season (Nürburgring and Le Mans) in addition. That was it.

The best and most interesting part (in my eyes) has been in preseason when team were built based on the average of their last three years overall FPL ranking. This also gave a bit of a structure concerning the grid, because you normally expect the favourites driving the fastest cars. The best team should also have best chances to win (that has been my idea at least). Under this condition surpises are also more "sensational".

Improvements from my part would have been faster updates, better graphics/tables/pics and also maybe help from Excel tables. Do you create tables by using Excel?

The hardest time for running the sidegame has been in January/February, when FPL went bad for me and the season was still long. At that time I lost motivation a bit.

In contrast preseason has been the best part. You need to consider, euphoria for FPL never is as high as it is in preseason, this also is the case for the sidegame-runner. After few GWs, enthusiasm can decrease noticeable for a lot of players.

Yeah after I posted previous post I read through your sidecomp rules. Anyway the idea for mine was to make teams more random - not necessarily having the same top teams here as they are in real life.

Regarding limited version etc - my main goal making it was to ask as little as possible from entrants - this is the main reason many dont play or lose interest. Here you just have to play FPL full season and thats it (no extra effort needed for the sidegame, just sit back, relax and watch your results - comment and post for more fun but if shy no problem :D )

As for division 2 - yeah I see why some might think it is not the same, but I do not see it that way. We have comps like Fiso mirror league with 3 divisions (if I am not mistaken) and it is fun to hope to advance to higher one at the end of season - if there would not be such possibility to fight for that then of course it would maybe not be as competitive, but this does give it some extra fun aspect. Also by the way I do not intend to use Formula 2 real life teams, but the same F1 teams for division 2.

About updates - I do not see a problem if the updates are not instant or are late - its only normal that for comps that we dont run for money etc we sometimes prioritize our real life :) . I already mentioned it that not always my updates will be on time in the sidegame thread, since I know it wont always be possible, but Ill try my best.

Regarding Excel - yes I intend to use Excel as it is the fastest way, even though maybe less flashy in its designs etc, but it would be the most time efficient for me.

Also regarding best cars for best racers - for me I think its more interesting if it is more spread out - yes less sensational if some team who never wins in real here wins, but at the same time it give more chance to all participants - instead of weak FPL player being in weak team, with weak partner and not really fighting for any points at all. Anyway, I dont mind it either way, but mine was set up more random

That's another philosophy and can be interesting of course.

In my point of view it's more logical if the best FPL players are in the best F1 teams, it's a more F1 simulating style.

And the spread was given anyway. I know this from my medal tables of the Spaceballs league. When you do monthly tables (or even weekly), there are always some surprises. First of all the opening month (August) and January are predestined for players that have more differential squads.

In the end my team (Alpha Tauri) finished first, BWT Racing Point third (both lower ranked teams) and AC Cobra, the second weakest on paper 5th/16. And every team got their points, the best team on paper (Mercedes) needed long time until they could reach their first points and ended 9th only.

The thing is, those who gonna win races are not the most consistent FPL managers. Those players who reach the best OR in the end rarely win a monthly (or weekly) tables.

Ok, yeah I see your point - that is true, some might not win and play consistently in something like 5-10th place and win FPL, but not be that high in F1 standings. Anyway, I could think of switching around teams based on their performances or something next year, but since this year everything is already prepared for division 1, then will leave it like is :) >

I anyway expected other things throughout the season that I will notice that should be improved, but since it is first year it is only normal.

So yeah, if you decide to play FPL feel free to register for second division - so far (I guess for same reasons we discussed) nobody has really applied, but maybe if some start registering we can get it going.
