TFF Wimbledon under way

Post by SamD »

Third Grand Slam of four begins with 25 in Fiso league, one down on last summer's entries. Good luck, all.
Half the 128 Men's & Women's Singles matches are scheduled for today, the rest on Tues.

Though a lucky pin might prove more successful sometimes, would anyone care to publish a selection strategy?
Hope to post own thoughts by Tues while process is relatively fresh and optimism hasn't evaporated...

Strategy.
Ladies:
- Pick finalists - Serena/Kvitova.
- Try to find others likely to progress at least to QFs out of expensive players/have a bit of recent grass court form.
- Get others that should get through first round!
Men:
- Pick finalists - Djokovic/Murray (/Fed)
- Pick someone from other quarter - may as well go Wawrinka despite fearing he'll exit early
- Pick Fognini and Ward given Ferrer's absence.
- Fill in with others that are at least the favourites to win their first round.

Guaranteed to do the normal mid-table finish :D

GAME STRATEGY - THEORY
1 Review full draw, player prices, betting odds and tipster guides.
2 Base main selections on recent form and bookie prices in each quarter.
3 Evaluate potential last eight before picking your finalists and at least one other semi-finalist.
4 Aim for five in each half of the draw, and at least two in every quarter.
5 Look for value in R1 & potential R2 matches, ie where odds favours player who costs less.
6 Fill in with cheaper selections; eg the 30 or so wild cards and qualifiers cost £1.0m
  • - give preference to Qs as they've survived/experienced three preliminary rounds
    - WCs, however, might just be the pampered locals at each Grand Slam...
PRACTICE - Team Picks

Code: Select all

draw £m MEN Qrtr odds
Q1U 11.0 Djokovic (1) 1/3F

Q1L 2.0 Zverev 80

Q2U 8.0 Wawrinka (4) 7/4F
      3.0 Baghdatis 40
Q2L 1.0 De Schepper (Q) 1,000

Q3U 3.0 Pospisil 100

Q3L 9.5 Murray (3) 1/2F
      2.5 Dolgopolov 40

Q4U 1.0 Mahut (W) 50

Q4L 9.0 Federer (2) 4/5F
      - -
     50.0
Notes
Spent £37.5m on top four seeds; obvious picks as they're also favourite in each quarter.
Considered Nishikori in lower half of Q1 but settled on Wawrinka who cost 8m too but is Q2 favourite.
Also looked at Berdych, 8.0m, in upper half of Q4 but picked Federer who's just 1m more.
That left 12.5m for remaining six players:
  • picked at least one in upper & lower halves of every quarter so team-mates couldn’t meet until R4
also ensured there were five in each half of the draw
based remaining assumptions on betting in each quarter
    • Zverev is favoured to win two matches, including R2 against seeded Cuevas
Baghdatis is also favourite to win first match and also second against seeded Robredo
De Schepper should win first round tie against fellow qualifer
Pospisil could beat seeded Fognini in round two and, with Ferrer out, could then reach last 16
Dolgopolov is 1/7 to win first round and is same price as seeded Karlovic, likely R2 opponent
wild card Mahut is 1/7 to win opening match before coming up against Berdych.
So, with luck, all ten could win R1 ties and at least eight go on to R3, the last 32.
First round is in progress so waiting for pratfall now… In any case, feel free to comment.

Women's team selected on similar basis

Code: Select all

draw £m WOMEN Qrtr odds
Q1U 11.0 Williams, S (1) 4/9F

Q1L 4.5 Bencic (30) 16 2F

Q2U 3.75 Gavrilova 66
      1.0 Sasnovich (Q) 150
Q2L 4.0 Stephens 6

Q3U 7.0 Kerber (10) 3JF

Q3L 5.75 Lisicki (18) 3JF

Q4U 1.75 Konjuh 16
      2.5 Maria 200
Q4L 8.0 Kvitova (2) 11/10F
    - - -
    49.25
Realize it's difficult trying to explain strategy but hope others will also make attempt.

I basically know nothing about tennis.

Pick the top few seeds I can.
Pick names I've heard of.
Randomly pick 1m priced fodder I've not heard of.

Although this year I did jot down a few names from the grass warm up events, ie Bencic.

I hardly ever get the chance to look through the match odds.

I tend to pick 3-4 very low priced players that I think will do well and then the 2 players I think have best chance of winning. That leaves a reasonably healthy budget with which to pick the quarter finalists. It hasn't really worked yet.

Tactics - I picked 7 out of 10 men who got through and also one high scoring loser in Hewitt. Somehow that makes me last.....

Sooo close to a perfect start - all men through and 9 women. Karatantcheva started out really good too but lost in 3rd set 5-7 :(. Best start for me ever I guess.

I do have some tactics, but sometimes I forget about the deadlines etc and just pick randomly (like it was more or less for Aussie Open):

1) I fill out both brackets at first, seeing who might have the easiest opponents throughout and might get to quarterfinals at least. (I don't base it on odds, but on my judgment based on recent scores and statistics)
2) Then I choose all the players who might have it the easiest to get until QF/SF plus cheap players who I think might be surprises or go far too.
3) Then I would check if the cheap players don't meet my expensive players in 2nd or 3rd round, but for Wimbledon I forgot to do this so Berdych will play against Mahut next and I have both.

Something like that, but I think the idea is quite similar for everyone. I base it more on my own knowledge and how I interpret stats though, and sometimes I pick my favorites just to make it more fun - that's why probably I mostly am mid-table in the end :D. For example, for Wimbledon I picked many risky options for my Men's team and if they fall through I'll definitely won't do good there as I don't have Murray, Wawrinka or Nadal (ok, not having Nadal probably isn't that bad, but not having the first two will most probably come back to me :D)

I usually start off by picking the top 2 in the men and women betting.
Then I look at the best overall odds for the rest of the players and base my budget around that initially for my starting lineup.
Then I revise all that after looking at the draws and make sure I have someone in every section of the draw and then ensure my lower ranked players don't meet one of the top guns too early.

After thought, I probably should have picked the top 4 men in each draw instead of just the top 2 in betting but time will tell.

Price cuts

Post by SamD »

Yes, organisers seem to have made it easier to pick 'better' players this time.

Cost of most expensive four (£m):
  • Code: Select all

                   Men Women
    Oz Open 42 36
