NFLUK PUB DRAFT - (£100 Offline Live Draft) Money League‏

Post by bluelionman »

Hey Fiso'ers,

The title says it all - after many years of toying with the idea of a big stakes live pub draft NFL fantasy league and trying to build up contact with interested parties that will buy into this idea I have finally got to the stage where I give it a go - 'build it and they will come' so to speak.

Getting anything like this off the ground is a major head-ache (as anyone who has run leagues will know first hand).

No one will ever be completely happy with every thing from the platform I choose to run the league on post draft (NFL.com), to the actual day, date, time or venue of the live draft itself. All I can say is I have tried to choose things to suit a majority of prospective GM's as well as work for me as the one not only wanting to be involved as a GM and draft a team myself but having to set up, promote and run this event.

So without further ado here is how I have got to this point...

I currently run 4 leagues annually on NFL.com which I am very passionate about and for ease of managing all of them is why I have chosen to host this fifth one (post live draft) on NFL.com to.

I have always dreamed of a big stakes money league amongst players I get to know offline so that I can put a face to the name on the screen (even if it's only once a year at the live draft itself) as this is by far my favourite fantasy sports game. I have settled on a £100 entry fee per player as feel this will make it attractive to those from far away to be worth travelling for and at the same time price out the flakes and not so seriously committed GM's, thus making for a very enjoyable and meaningful league experience. Also with this kind of entry fee I feel it allows players to justify the time they may spend on the game over the course of a season.

I have already put an order in for a live draft kit via a friend stateside (as NFL.com will not ship this outside of the USA). This will add to the cost of it as he will have to forward it on to me.

The draft board/kit I have requested is here:

Also I plan this league to be an annual affair and hope many GM's will return season upon season and thus from the get go I want the eventual champion to have something unique and special to keep. As players who win the Super Bowl talk about rings thought it would be nice to also award the NFLUK PUB DRAFT winner with a championship ring. I have found a firm (again stateside) that specialises in rings for fantasy leagues but unsure how much it will cost to get one as shipping to the UK will add to the cost but also never know if UK customs will bang on any charges.

I know people want to know what the prizes are before they go into something but it all depends how many entrants this league attracts. All I can say is 100% of all monies collected in will be used for buying in the draft kit, paying for a championship winners ring and making end of season prizes.

I will run this league with a minimum of 8 GM's and a maximum of 16.

I will put aside the first £300 of entry fee's to cover buying in the draft kit and getting the winners ring made up and shipped over including all associated costs (postage/customs etc.) Any monies left over (if any - and I hope there will be) will be used to make a spot prize for which ever GM is awarded the best Team Performance (Season) as this is a stat that NFL.com records in it's history section. I think it just uses all the points you have scored cumulatively over the regular fantasy weeks of the season but however they do it the winner is who they list in that position at the end of the game. This makes a wee bonus prize for the best performing team over the season with any monies left over from the £300 put aside to cover getting the eventual winners ring and draft kit.

All the rest of the money will be used to make prizes for the following places:

WINNER
RUNNER-UP
THIRD
HIGHEST WEEKS SCORE (includes play-offs)

Naturally until I know how big the league is won't know how big the prize fund is so will confirm the exact prizes either when I have 16 paid up entrants or ASAP after the live draft itself (before the bulk of Week 1's games kick off).

I hope all of you are happy with that... I can say categorically all entry fees will be used for costs and prizes only.

I have set the league up today on NFL.com:

The draft date is Saturday 30th August.

The venue I have chosen to host the live draft in is the Toby Carvery in Redhill, Surrey.

http://www.tobycarvery.co.uk/redhillsurrey/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have chosen this venue as it is next to Redhill railway station - which in turn is only 4 train stations along the line from Gatwick Airport heading towards London (just 2 stops on faster services). Drinks are reasonably priced with free refills on Lemonade or Pepsi (great for those of you driving). It has a small car park and for those coming from afar has a Travelodge attached. However I could not see availability for the Saturday night (30/8) - but looking at Travelodges website could see availability for both there new Crawley hotel and refurbished Gatwick hotels at their saver rates on this date and both are on the same train line to get to Redhill - the Crawley one though further away miles wise from Redhill is much nearer the train station and on the edge of the town centre there so I would suggest is a better option and also better for a night out than the Gatwick one which is kind of on the boundary of Gatwick and Horley so quite a walk or bus ride to either train station (Horley or Gatwick) or Horley town centre for a night out.

Any way with the internet am sure any of you can find good deals with this much advance notice for both travel to the venue and if you want to stay over a good hotel or similar - that's why I am setting up this league now to give the maximum notice for all of you to arrange things to be able to come and commit to this.

I have set up a Poll within the league itself for GM's to vote on the start time of the draft - the options being

14:00, 15:00, 16:00. 17:00 or 18:00

I will go with the majority result.

As this is a money league have tried to stick with all of the default settings on NFL.com - the only thing that will be changed is size of the league depending how many people join and whether we have divisions or not (will engage with all who join this league and if needs be run a poll). Should we decide to have divisions these will be drawn on the draft day itself prior to the live draft.

Draft spots to be totally fair will be drawn on the day itself - I know those of you that want to plan an advance strategy will not like this but feel it is the only way to be above board, open and fair to all with regards their drafting position. It will be a snake draft so whomever drafts last in round 1 will be first to draft in Round 2 and so on.

Last but not least as this league requires an equal number of teams I will have to operate a last in first out policy meaning if we can not get an even number of teams then the last team to have fully paid up will be removed and entry fee refunded. Also people need the confidence to know this is actually happening especially if traveling from far, far away so to join the league requires a deposit £20 with the balance to be paid by 16th August (two weeks before draft day). Naturally anyone can pay the full entry fee right away but know some people might not know me or wish to spend out that much money now this early on. However with regards to the last in first out rule your are only considered as fully in when the full entry fee has been paid.

I would like fees to be paid by PayPal please - though if you don't have PayPal then cash or cheque (for the full amount) is fine.

That's it - any extra questions please feel free to contact me and hope you can all decide this is for you ASAP and make me feel at ease by paying your entry fee and securing your spot.

Best regards,

Noel Symonds (aka bluelionman)

Re: NFLUK PUB DRAFT - (£100 Offline Live Draft) Money League

This is getting more love on the NFLUK forum - now have 7 (including myself) fully paid up players committed for this and 2 more who have paid a £20 deposit with approximately 4 weeks to go until live off-line draft day. Really like to get this up to 12/14 peeps by then (& 16 is the maximum).

Can't work out why the home of fantasy games (here) is so quiet?

Follow the chatter over on my NFLUK forum thread about this game:

Do get involved if you want the full offline experience like our US cousins have done for years... 8-)
