FISO shrugs shoulders about new England captain...

Post by tommymooney »

...no thread about new captain or the squad. Rooney only real choice sad to say. Lack of thread does suggest people are more interested in Costa injury or Champions league.

Worst squad evah? Take Sturridge, Sterling and Rooney out of it and it looks really weak.

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City)
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Everton)
Midfielders: Jack Colback (Newcastle United), Fabian Delph (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
Forwards: Rickie Lambert (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United)

Platini has changed the format for the Euros so everyone qualifies so just another glorified friendly, harder not to qualify.

True, but for pride it looks a bit undercooked for what should be the most difficult fixture... But I suppose we are what we are at the moment. One or two names there certainly have the ability to make themselves stars if they apply themselves.

I don't think I'd leave Rooney in charge of my library books let alone two football teams....

It just means we're sensible compared to rabid journalists who attach the utmost significance to which England player wears the armband and tosses the coin, claiming that it really matters to the man in the street...when in reality I've never met anyone who gave a shit.

Anyway, the country gets the captain it deserves and Captain Fat-astic is just the latest in the recent trend of slimeballs (Terry, Rio, Gerrard).

They will be one and the same within a few years at this rate...

Very ordinary looking squad, particularly the centre of midfield and defence, but qualifying will still be a walkover and playing snoozefest friendlies with the likes of Norway won't get the crowds in. Bring back the Home Internationals, at least that would stir up some old rivalries even if the quality would be poor.

Could it be the International is a second rate game tarted up as the cream of the game? Maybe people are awakening.

Well, the World Cup is certainly still the cream of the game, as we saw in Brazil... much more interesting than the game where two clubs buy all the biggest names in world football anyway. But England aren't offering us much to get excited about at the moment and that doesn't look like changing any time soon.

I agree with others that essentially it feels like Platini has ruined the Euros. I've no interest in qualifying, and then as usual England will do absolutely nothing of note in the Finals!

I hope a real minnow qualifies like a Cyprus, Malta, Iceland - that's the only way I can get enthused. Wales could finish 3rd in their group?

'UEFA stated that nations with the largest markets in terms of contribution to the European Qualifiers revenue would be drawn into one of the groups containing six teams' (from Wiki)

Says it ALL for me.

The squad might look a tad stronger if both Lallana and Barkley were fit...but England are continuing to head down the same path as Scotland.

Yeah, we're probably about where Scotland were 20 years or so ago... quite possible we could be reduced to occasional World Cup qualifiers and picking lower league players within a decade or two.

For English football to be the best in the world we need both a successful England team and English clubs dominating Europe, it's going to take a lot of money and good management at many levels to achieve that.

The squad named today is terrible (isnt it)?
Is anyone missing due to injuries?

Walker and G Johnson (latter is on borrowed time anyway). Anyone else? Lallana?

If we have been left disappointed over the last 12-16 years?
Our golden generation under-achieved?
What will this crock offer us?

At least expectations should be well managed.

Those two things are probably mutually exclusive. If English teams are dominating Europe then they'd probably be choc full of non English players.

This European Competition, has really taken a nose dive.

France have been given a false group. Are they expecting the teams they play to take the game seriously? I get the feeling there will be League Cup line ups.

In the tournament itself, there has been an inept response to it's staging in the Brittany region. Rennes, Guingamp, Nantes and Lorient are all in Ligue One.
Even considering this, the French FA went ahead and chose the venues on what seemed an illogical basis. The nearest venues to this region are Bordeaux and Paris. A considerable distance to travel for local Ligue One supporters. Their enthusiasm has been somewhat dented.
I'm still amazed, that even though there will be 24 teams playing in the tournament the distribution of the matches across France is very limited.
What did Platini have to say?
UEFA President Michel Platini said: ""I believe the calendar is great for fans since they will get the chance to see several teams and matches in or around their respective regions". Fans of a particular team are also now encouraged to travel around France to follow their team and discover the beauty the country has to offer.
Posterior talking? I think so.

Platini has just pulled out of the running to stand as FIFA president giving Blatter a clear run at yet another term.

We are stuck with this mob for a LONG time yet.....

I'll stick with club football. Much more fun. Great turnover. Better scandals. More irrational debate. Definitely more heartfelt.
Put simply, it's too hard to compete with.

World Cups and Euros are great, it's just the stuff in between that's a bit crap... especially now Platini has devalued the Euro qualifiers.

Replacing friendlies with some sort of ongoing international league or even regionalised "local derby" competitions, and perhaps slimming down the bloated qualifying groups by having two stages as well, would surely help.

The last world cup was the long overdue death of Brazil. Unfortunately it's still blatantly bent. The european championship is no different. Corrupt. Sychophants in blazers living off the backs of those that produce. They use nationalism to get their pennies worth. It's time some started refusing their labour like they do for friendlies.

It's worked for Spain in recent years... have the best players in the world join your league, and the home grown players get better by playing alongside them. Maybe if we stopped funding things like health, education and wars in the Middle East and put all the money into football we might get there in 50 years
