Flyman's powerful motoring post
Stick PM'd me to say he had been thinking about Flyman's post a lot and felt it deserved a place in here. Perhaps not your archetypal "Classic" along the lines of other entries, but I agree with him. So here it is.

Bump.
This story came up in a conversation earlier today, so I was triggered to come and find the full post. Seriously worth a read for anyone on here who wasn't a few years ago. And still worth reading for the rest of us!

Re: Flyman's powerful motoring post
Tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of the worst day of my life (see link above). I don't think there's been a day in the last decade when the horror of it hasn't crossed my mind. Life goes on, of course, and there have been some positives which have come from the experience but I guess it still weighs heavily on me.
So I thought I'd give this thread a bump and ask you all to take a little extra care when out and about. Better to arrive five minutes late than five hours ..... or not at all.
All the best.

Re: Flyman's powerful motoring post
Wow, not sure how I missed this first time around. Just read the whole story with a lump in my throat. I even passed my phone to my missus for her to have a read.
So eloquently and delicately written, as always the way with you James, thank you for sharing, it can't have been easy.
Rest easy Mr Nicholson.

Must have been emotional for you today, James.
I can still remember sitting at my desk at work reading it for the first time and feeling my throat gradually drying up. It was, and continues to be, very powerful.

Re: Flyman's powerful motoring post
A terrible, terrible thing to witness Flyman.
I would advise anyone (especially motorcyclists) to consider taking a course in RTA first aid. I say motorcyclists because many will be witness to accidents involving their fellow riders.
There are methods for removing helmets. The techniques are quite specialised, so this is not a criticism and from your description, the rider was dying anyway. However, the feeling of frustration in watching someone die whilst remaining powerless is very upsetting.
I really feel for you.

I do a lot of driving for work and actually know I take a lot for granted when driving.....you have made me think about what I do on the roads more

Cheers, Bunners, that's all I hoped for with the bump.Bunners wrote:I do a lot of driving for work and actually know I take a lot for granted when driving.....you have made me think about what I do on the roads more
Sted: I've been told that nowadays a lot of helmets are designed to open down the middle so that they can be more easily removed after an accident but don't know if that's true?
You're quite right about doing a first aid course - we all should. Perhaps it should be part of the driving test?

Re: Flyman's powerful motoring post
Very sad
I can concur with the bit about having a giggle at the dentist pronouncing. You'll soon go mad if don't have that release mechanism
Also agree about motorcycles being death traps. Have an accident in a car and you'll likely live. Come off a bike and you have nothing to stop you hitting something hard at speed.

Re: Flyman's powerful motoring post
Should bump this every year.
Must be terrible to know that you've played a part in someone's death, even if you weren't at fault and there was nothing you could do.
Does make me think about some of the times that I've gone downhill on my bike at 50mph+, close to the white line on the bends with nothing but a bit of lycra and a helmet that's useless much beyond 20mph impacts to protect me. One lapse of concentration, misjudgement or a driver not concentrating..... Really not worth risking 2 kids not having a dad for the sake of a bit of an adrenaline hit.
