The original FISO website .....

Post by quizking »

Although the original philboards would have long been deactivated, an article in the current webuser magazine (issue 330) suggested that many original web pages are still archived out there somewhere -

and indeed they are, go to -
http://web.archive.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
just paste whatever URL you like into the time machine, pick a year and bingo. For fiso, would appear that their first "snapshot" of the site was from september 18th, 2000. Seems that the years up to around 2004 work best, you can search down through the forums - any more recent, and the site would have been getting too big for the archive to have taken images of all the pages, plus there was a sign-in required to view some content.

Apologies if this has been noted elsewhere on fiso recently, but i can't see it - anyways, might still prove of interest, re many other sites that users might recall, not just the old-style fiso.

steve

edit - on an unrelated note, i came across the site a while back, looking for old audio; note via audio link at top of the page, they have a substantial collection of grateful dead live recordings (admittedly this might not be of interest to all readers - but there's lots of other stuff there too).

Cautious about trying to log in, not that I can remember my password from those days :-) but would the content still be there? Even the restricted forums?

No, the log-in won't work - but the content from the (very) early years is still there - once you get to the log-in periods, it can't be accessed. The earliest of my own posts i've found so far is from 2003, lots of familiar names on the board too.

Noticeable how much less user-friendly the web was even back then - have to click through five pages before getting to the actual "content" (the equivalent of the forum pages is accessed via what was then called the message forum).

Just one example of a page - a "new members" introducing themselves piece ...

http://web.archive.org/web/200301280937 ... asp?id=697" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

edit again - by bizarre coincidence vid, that's the page where you introduce yourself?!

Nah, Sky Sports had something like SSFM as their title back then, it was the same time as admin and myself were beta testing their attempt at an online MMO, it was good fun whilst it lasted.

Browser problem perhaps?

This is as far back as I can see that it goes - and that's a few months before the actual "forum" started, not sure that chris had any idea what he might be starting ...

Errr.. you'll need to spoon feed me a bit more than that!

I tried typing FISO 2001 into their box like a search and it didn't like it.....

EDIT - ah, stick in http://www.fiso.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and you get a few by date

Here is one from 2003 of Chris and Fozzy trying to work out if FF players fit a stereotype....

"FISO's message forum was launched on 11 August 2001."

The post count thing may not be accurate as I found a post from the day before which had me on 103 posts. That said I guess I must have signed up very cllose to when it started which makes 12 years as a FISO member. That's a bit geeky.

So seems this might be the first ever post. I do like how simple the Ts & Cs were back then!

First post by admin was very similar but there were no sub-forums in those days, just the one.
