Gas and Electricity
What do you pay each month for gas and electricity?
I have a small terraced house with 3 kids of 6 and under and my DD is £100 a month
About right?

I have a small terraced house with 3 kids between 6 and 13. I pay £95/month at the moment, although I last switched 6 months ago and generally find they tend to under-estimate the DD at first to hoick you in.

https://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/home ... ref=D32404
Try this web page, check on the gas and electridity tariffs for your area, then you can compare & see if you're paying too much.

£10 quid per adult per week is a good rule of thumb. So when your mates stay, CHARGE them

Re: Gas and Electricity
Can we have a quick check on gas & electric costs?
I've moved suppliers a couple of times since we moved at back end of 2010. With Scottish Power for the last year.
4 bed semi, 2 kids 4 and 5 years old. Started out paying £100 a month. Raised to £123 which was more realistic / increased prices.
But last week they raised it to £161 a month to clear a £300 debit. I then provided up to date meter readings and now they have raised it again to £175....jesus
They reckon about £130 ish for our usage, and the extra is to clear the backlog over the course of a year.
What's everyone else paying now?

£120 a month
Dont let them increase it - they dont pay you when you are in credit!!!!
During the summer it will come down becasue you pay a flat fee per month - you owe them in the winter - they owe you in the summer but over the course of a season these things even themselves out

Re: Gas and Electricity
Currently circa £200pcm but that's because our house is not fully centrally heated at the moment so we had to rely on electric heaters elsewhere.
the bits that are heated use an industrial oil fired furnace effectively which at the height of the cold snap used £375 of oil - in a month
If we played fantasy utilities where you got points for the complexity of your utility set up I would be top by a country mile.
nap.

Feeling rather fortunate.
2 bed flat. 2 adults and 2 kids.
£68 pcm electric only. No gas. Clearly as cheap as chips.

Not if the rate they pay is better than that of a savings account,I think scottish power pays 3 or 4% on overpayments.

I wasn't being serious but it is nice to get a rebate in your bank account for £100 or so.Groomyd wrote:But you're losing interestmurf wrote:They do sometimes. It works out as a nice savings scheme if you overpayGroomyd wrote:Dont let them increase it - they dont pay you when you are in credit!!!!

It's not hard with British Gas, just log in and if you're owed money, it's just a matter of a few clicks and it's repaid

Happens as maybe - but are you on a market leading long term fixed deal which enables you to move without penalty?juckster wrote:It's not hard with British Gas, just log in and if you're owed money, it's just a matter of a few clicks and it's repaid

Re: Gas and Electricity
It was there last month, and was top on all the comparison sites I used.
You do have to say you are on different Companies to get them to work properly as they never recommend a different tariff from the same supplier. For some reason they don't show links that they would not get a joining fee from

I sent them an email last week saying exactly that. Rather than yo-yo-ing from £123 to £161 then re-appraised next quarter and adjusted back down, I suggested I just pay £130 and over the course of the year or so, will all even out. Even mentioned the exceptionally cold April, and how we'd be cutting back
They replied with a set of calcs showing my ongoing usage would be £130 a month evened out across the year, so £31 added on top per month to get the £300+ deficit back. Then early this week, a standard email in response to the meter readings taking it to £175.
I even tried comparing last years bills with this year, but because of different types of units, I couldn't work out what the eff it all meant

Re: Gas and Electricity
Small 3 bedroom end of terrace bungalow ...
Electrics £30 per month on a quarterly pay for what you use bill
Oil £50 per month (£600 for 12-15 months worth depending on winter conditions)
No gas
Electrics have dropped about £5 per month since my son went off to Uni.
We were thinking of changing to the Co-Op's electric scheme as this could save us up to £30 a year over our current provider (EDF) except we would have to start paying set amounts by DD and all the providers seem to faff about with this which would annoy me having to keep phoning up to correct/adjust it, which is why I like the pay for what you use scheme - a saving of up to £2.50 a month does not seem worth the extra agro - EDF keep suggesting their DD scheme at £120 a quarter even though our bill is always under £100.

4 bed detached. Misses, me and baby.
Combined gas and electric roughly £100 a month, always do my own readings. During the summer ( obviously ) it drops to £40-50 a month and ( obviously ) up to £150 or so a month.
Do you guys let your misses have the heating on? Jesus, I tell her she can have it on for 1-2 hours per day

4 Bed Semi. Just me and Mrs, but lots of visiting kids and Grandkids , who leave lights on everywhere..I pay £110 per month for both. I have changed suppliers a few times, but not really noticed many savings.
Double glazing, roof insulation , condensing boiler ,blah blah all make a big difference. Oh and like Mad Dog said, be a tightarse, & tell kids to put a jumper on...
