Working from home
Afternoon,
Does anyone know / recommend ways of working from home?
I have seen the following so far:
Setting up a business to sell items online (not sure where you get the goods from in the first place), but could be a start.
Walking dogs
Ironing
Any other thoughts or ideas?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Working from home
The majority of home based work seems to need a specialist skill - do you have any?
Skills needed: translator, freelance writer, typist, woodwork, metalwork, digital designer, web designer, sign writer etc
Others are not quite so specialist: telesales, research callers, website testers, taking online surveys, secret shopper ...
Try the job sites for home-based listings.

Child minder?
Depends why you want to work from home and what you need to earn. Is it just to dodge the commute or do you want flexibility around nipping in and out, school drop offs etc?

Re: Working from home
Working from home will be for my partner (Jessica) as she will not be in a position to return to work once her maternity leave finishes.
She wants to be a stay at home mum, but it will be difficult without her wages.

Not quite the answer to exaactly what you asked, but make sure to advise Jess that she must keep her discipline when working from home.Ashers wrote:Working from home will be for my partner (Jessica) as she will not be in a position to return to work once her maternity leave finishes. The key is to not get up later or vary your routine or you get sloppy - keep to your normal working hours and don't take breaks other than those you'd've taken had you been at the office (lunch i.e.).

Ashers I'm sure she would thank you if you told her this.mividaloca wrote:Not quite the answer to exaactly what you asked, but make sure to advise Jess that she must keep her discipline when working from home.Ashers wrote:Working from home will be for my partner (Jessica) as she will not be in a position to return to work once her maternity leave finishes. Re: Working from home
A couple of my friends wife's work from home, a childminder and another who sells Avon.
Child minding might be good, from my own experience they charge a fortune!, I'm sure they have to be registerd with Ofsted now so I'm not sure how time consuming/expensive it will be to get the necessary qualifications to meet their criteria.

More kids the better.
My three kill each other most days but introduce a few more and they all just play in groups.

Re: Working from home
That's probably good advice in general terms, but it depends on what you're doing. In some cases your tasks will largely dictate your hours, with child minding the kids arrival and departure times will be a major constraint on any sloppiness, as will the dates when the VAT man etc demand bits of paper. OK that means a somewhat ambitious start up income, but you get the point.mividaloca wrote:Not quite the answer to exaactly what you asked, but make sure to advise Jess that she must keep her discipline when working from home.

There was a period when I was UK based but going overseas typically for a month and then typically having two months back home for analysis and report writing. My hours were totally erratic, sometimes nothing, sometimes starting at 6 am, sometimes at noon. But the assignments were always completed (just) on time. The most important thing is not to allow yourself to be distracted any more than you would be working anywhere else. But if you do have more freedom, enjoy it. Then you'll be happy and consequently more productive when you are working.
My strongest advice though is to do something that one enjoys doing. Then you'll probably be as, if not more, productive as you would be working anywhere else. But if you are working from home doing something which you hate, or which bores you silly, the chances of being sufficiently disciplined over a period are remote.
So in your consideration of what to do my starting point would focus on what you'd be good at and what you'd enjoy doing, and then consider what market opportunities might exist in those areas, rather than starting from a consideration of potential markets.
So Ashers what are your partners skills and attributes and even more important what would she really like to do. Start from here rather than throwing child minding, dog walking, tele sales, etc etc etc all into the ring.

Re: Working from home
Given that he's said it's for when her maternity leave ends.... I don't think there's much risk of her lying in and/or getting out of a routine.
