Cool London restaurant?
For our recent birthdays my wife and I have been given £200 to spend on meal out at a top restaurant.
We were thinking of going to Gordon Ramsey's at Claridge's but I've just taken a look at the website and it looks too stuffy for my liking (confirmed by the fact that jackets are the preferred dress code). Not long ago we went to a place called Crazy Bear, which was right up our street - a really cool place with great atmosphere and top food . That’s more our kind of thing.
Can anyone recommend somewhere good to go in London?

J Sheekey (sister restaurant of the Ivy) is superb especially if you like fish. Nice surroundings, super friendly staff and great food.

Thanks for the replies.
Oxo tower is current favourite. (Sketch looks TOO cool and J Sheekey a bit too fishy). Any other suggestions?

I don't know Londn that well but last time I was down I had a top meal at Smiths of Smithfield - I think the Aussie bloke of MasterChef runs it.

Re: Cool London restaurant?
The coolest London Restaurants?????
Claridges is very nice,I never wore a jacket,trousers and shirt were fine..
The ultimate London Restaurant,you have to book in advance,but if you get a table then make sure you buy his book and he'll sit at your table and sign it(ask),Food is amazing,have been there 4 time now and if i'm ever in London I book...10/10..No dress code,Madonna was wearing Jeans ,and Jemima Khan,both proper tidy in the flesh..
http://www.locandalocatelli.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Le Gavroche was Jacket and tie,but what a meal..
http://www.le-gavroche.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Fantastic food,and one of the best cheese boards i've ever seen.Think I wore jeans.
http://www.tomaikens.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Richard Corrigan at Lindsay House,awesome food in Soho Wore trousers and shirt
http://www.lindsayhouse.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Alan Ducasse at the Dorchester was sublime,trousers and shirt was fine
http://www.thedorchester.com/restaurant ... casse.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Ramsey's signature restaurant is brilliant,if he's in the country he'll greet you when you arrive.again I wore trousers and shirt.
http://www.gordonramsay.com/royalhospitalroad/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I could name more but that'll do surely
I would ring ahead and double check the dress codes.
If you can get in Locatelli's then that would be my no1 choice..
Enjoy!

Most things about the place are pretty over blown. Its on Conduit Street I think a stones throw from the Apple store on regents street.
It's almost worth going to see the toilets - they make the website seem understated.

The Oxo Tower is very mediocre - more of a business dinner place. Best known for the comedy restaurant review "I took my girlfriend up the OXO Tower for her Birthday..."

Re: Cool London restaurant?
Wow, thanks for that list Adidias!
Locatelli's it is then! Sounds like you know what you're talking about and I have seen that one high up in another "Top 10" list somewhere too. It looks good in the pictures as well.
We're not in any hurry to go so dont mind a wait for a table, will give us something to look forward to. Sounds like it will be worth it.
ps agree with others about the Sketch website. I really don't like these places that are so pretentious they feel the need to have a fancy website that no-one can navigate properly.

There are only a handful of things I will happily spend good money on and top food is one.Trainers are another obviously.
Whenever I/we go to London we book decent/top restaurants for the evenings,
Now when we go it's Locatelli's and 1 other.
Hope you get a table as it's superb food,
the time before last, I was at Locatelli's with my dad and a mate,
I noticed Camilla with her son Tom Parker Bowles and a few others sat 2 tables away,after they had left Giorgio came and sat at our table to sign the book we had bought.
I asked him if Camilla came in here often,he said a few times but never with Charles..
He then said (cool as you like) 'Madonna's behind you'
My dad and mate were sat in front if me so they could see straight away where she was ,I had to do the cool turn without being noticed move , which I pulled off
She's tiny,but looked superb.....Oh and I can confirm the young seriously good looking fella with her was not Guy.....neither was it Yer Old Da
And the cocktails are fantastic,and the Pink Champagne,
If you nice and early then go into the adjoining Hotel,The Churchill and have a drink in the Churchill bar,

I love the Ivy - been twice. Went last week - relaxed but great service and food you can eat and not play with. Watched Paul Merton and Michael Grade plotting deals over their lunch
Not cool but certainly enjoyable.
(Savoy Grill is great - but too stuffy for my liking)

Breakfast may change but dinner will be at Joel's
Looking forward to trying Scott's and The Square soon
In tough times it has be said top London (and Parisian) restaurants offer stunning value lunches or pre theatre meals
One of my favourites Taillevent in Paris 45 euros for superb food, service and surroundings
And I think Michelin Bib Gourmand offer great value at anytime

Try Bibendums, especially if you are Petrolheads as the Restaurant is in the Michelin building and has a strong Car theme - Food is incredible
Simply Nico or Chez Nico is good, the first is very cramped though
Browns has a great reputation but is maybe a little intimate for what you have in mind - was once voted London's 'sexiest' restaurant
If I had to go to just one place though it would be Le Gavroche - although I think it will be waaaay too 'stuffy' for what you want

Went to 'Sexy Fish' last night. Spectacular place. Food mostly really good (lamb was brilliant, scallops and sea bass excellent, sashimi just OK).
Apparently cost 20 million to fit out.
20 million
Anyway, no idea how long the waiting list is for a table, but if you want somewhere spectacular for a date and like spotting celebs then its worth a shot.
The whole evening was a bit bizarre really. Started with a meeting in a private members club in Mayfair, then G&T in the club bar, onto Sexy Fish and then finished the evening off over the square at Annabel's.
Put it this way, I'm glad I wasn't paying.
I don't think Austerity has penetrated Mayfair yet...

Didn't realise it was all Japanese, but yes, loads of them. Stuck to Champagne and wine until we got to the club later (£16.50 for a G&T ).

Add Zuma to the list. Japanese place in Knightsbridge. Some of the best sashimi I’ve had anywhere. Soft shell crab to die for.
Was there last night. Again, glad I wasn’t paying
