Got a mate's 40th coming up and want to buy him a 40 year old Whisky. Don't want to spend more than £350 if I can help it but also don't want to buy him some tosh either.

Well... what did you get?

Based on your advice of finding out what region he likes whisky from, I sent a message to his wife so she could try and find out…..one week later I've still heard nothing so might just have to ask him myself!

If you don't get an answer then the safe bet is Speyside.
That 40yo Glenfarclas I mentioned in the previous post is one such safe bet.

From what I could tell, first time buyer was based on email address, so could just create new address. I didn't even have to register, just checked out as a guest. Maybe Jnr could be the new customer worst case scenario!!

On my last trip to London two weeks ago, I bought in the Heathrow duty free two bottles for about £150:

Bunnahabhain Cruach-Mhona , 1Ltr, 50%vol - That is a very nice, (light) Islay type malt on the sweet side, good for all occasions.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan, 70cl , 57.1%vol - Superb! Heavy weight, more character than Satan's CV and a perfect Islay malt. If you know your whisky, this is one of the top ten available today.

@Ironfist - Got a bottle of Corryvreckan in the attic with an Araigh Namh Beist, Usgheidail and Renaissance. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with them yet though:-) nice drink.

Hope you didn't demolish them all in a big Purim binge last week.

Ardbeg in general are probably one of the best 5 distilleries out there and each of their creations is magnificent. Not everyone likes an Islay malt, but regardless of region, Ardbeg make one impressive product.

The Corryvreckan actually replaces the an Araigh Namh Beist in the product line and is more peaty and harder punching. Personally I like any cask strength version as the character of the island is far better kept in them.

btw,... I wouldn't dare drink such lovely single malts in a party or binge drinking as they are not designed for that purpose and would be a waste and a shame. There's J.Walkers & Shivas and G*d forbid dodgy foreign products for that... Besides, over the years my system got immune to Whisky and it would cost a fortune to get drunk on quality single malts.

What are your top 3 (yes, only 3) whiskies (aka distilleries)?
Mine are:

Ardbeg - for purrfect heavily peated Islay malt.
Highland Park - for Vikings, swords & blood in the most sophisticated fashion, the Aston Martin of whiskies.
Glenfarclas - a thinking man's desert replacement.

I think blends have moved on a bit from trying to get the most quality out of the poorest ingredients. Was in not Jonnie Walker Black that won whisky of the year (see above this thread somewhere).

Aston Martin's tend to be better than Skoda's but they costs a lot more too. Compare the Skoda of the blend -v- the skoda of the single malt and then you have a contest on your hands.

Chivas regal 18 £45 -v- Glenfiddich 18 £45

I know what I would choose.

Besides even Aston Martins have their engines built by Ford.

Another award for JW Black, and a Japanese whisky takes the title for 2015.

Opened a bottle of Ardbeg Rollercoaster last weekend - nice, a blend of 10 quite young malts - not the explosive stuff that sometimes comes from Ardbeg but high quality drinking all the same. Yum.

On offer later this evening in Amazon's Black Friday so hopefully significantly less than the advertised £57. (They had Talisker Storm at £24 the other night)

Worth a dabble if it is cheap enough??
