Beer Advent Calendar!!
Yes indeedy - after 40-odd years on this planet I have finally discovered the meaning of christmas and, to exaggerate only slightly, possibly even the meaning of life.
I am now the pround owner of a beer advent calendar. 24 different bottles of beer behind their own doors numbered 1 to 24. What could be better? There is even a free glass. All for just £30.
No, this isn't a cynical way for Morrisons to get rid of a load of unwanted beer, this is something true, deep, meaningful and far better than frankincense or even myrrh*. This is what ickle baby jesus was born for.
So get down Morrisons while stocks last and join me in the December tasting notes.
* = I'll hold judgement re the gold til I've tasted them.

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
I'm in, got mine (the beer one, not the cannabis) this afternoon. Looked around on-line and was very tempted by a German bier calendar, but sold out . Still this should be good and the early Black Friday price is well below anything else I could find. Hopefully it will still be the same price tomorrow (if there are any left). Most places these sort of calendars are over £60.
Cheers for the heads up Murf.

She told me to leave it in the trolley but her scanner didn't work so I had to read the barcode numbers out!Spinynorman wrote:Got mine today.

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Friday is usually an alcohol free day for me. Do I make an exception or just have 2 on saturday??
According to the instructions I have to open the calendar in the morning and put it in the fridge to cool down anyway.....
(So if staying up til midnight you'll have a warm one tonight!)

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Are you supposed to keep opening and closing the big flap on the front or take it off and expose the doors?

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
So anyone else opened the first door yet?
Not a one I would ever choose but I'll give it a go later. Already stone cold. Not sure what temp this should be drunk at. A bloke from Maxim brewery told me the temp their beer was best at and it was way higher than I ever like, so perhaps cold is not always optimum.
LATER- edit - Guessing stone cold as originally stored in underground caves when brewed in Pilsner.
Probs drink mine tonight - expect we all get the same one each day.

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
No picture of a robin, snowflake or Sydney Opera House at the back!
To confirm we all have the same, mine is a Belhaven 'Craft' Pilsner. Now fridged.
At my school craft meant metalwork, woodwork or needlework etc not brewing. I went to the wrong school clearly!

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
DAY 1 - Belhaven 'Craft' Pilsner
Hmmm.... not the way to excite me on day 1. A lager. I like a lager occasionally like a refreshing Bud in the summer but it is not really one for a cold wnter's evening. To an extent lager is just lager to me but this was indeed a bit more flavoursome than a can of Heineken but not enough to write home about. Happy enough to drink if there is nothing else in the house. Meh. 5/10 (harsh scoring partly to give room to differentiate the next 23, hopefully more inspiring, beers).

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Well the one I least fancied was thirst er first. When you are trying to watch your weekly alcohol intake this was a waste of 1.6 units. Better than nothing, better than a bland mass produced tv advertised tinny lager, better than the worst home brews I've ever had and I think that's about it so a begrudged 3/10.
Lets raise a glass to the next one whatever that is! Anyone admit to peeking?

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Day 2.
No coments on the Gold Fuddler?
A nice enough, inoffensive blonde beer. The most interesting thing they could say about it in on the bottle was that it was named after a fishing lure and I can't add much. A solid 7/10 though.
Cons: 275ml - That's not even half a pint. It all fitted in the freebie glass! By the time I'd had my first mouthful and thought "I'd best savour the next one for tasting note purpose" there was none left!

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
I didn't get round to trying this before MotD.
Very disappointing. Not much better than the lager the day before.
Reading the label before drinking I noticed that they claimed to take care I the brewing process which was good to know but they should have taken more care with the label itself. There was a misprint in the wording! (Repeating as much)
Anyway I thought the same about their description - named after a fishing fly - wow!
4/10
Day 3 is a well known beer which I sometimes buy in bottles.

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Day 3 - Bombadier - marketed as a proper English beer and it is. Good unclean dirty taste with notes of ploughed field and mouldy turnip. Another 7/10
Day 4 not drunk yet but annoyed at another Dennis Wise sized bottle

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
The Youngs was nicer than expected, not at all 'light' in flavour or appeal . Probably the best yet. Will let it sneak my first 8/10 as I am resisting the temptation to dock marks for bottle size.

Re: Beer Advent Calendar!!
Bombardier - (Day 3) - yes as expected not let down - good solid bottled beer at 5.2% decent drink - best enjoyed with a rousing chorus of Jerusalem. 7.5/10.
Incidentally Days 3/4/5 all from same brewery Wells & Young (Bedford).
