Family destinations between Calais and Rome!

Post by Hotpot »

It looks like I will be doing a lot of driving with the family this Summer.

We are planning on going from Calais to somewhere close to Rome and I'm looking for suggestions for good places to stop off on the way to break up the drive a bit. Probably looking for a couple of stop offs each for 2 or 3 nights - I don't mind veering off track a bit for a nice place that fits the bill and is cheap :D

The kids are 11, 9 and 5 so need somewhere with plenty of Activities to keep them occupied.

Anyone got any ideas?

:D

No (don't do kids!) but I'd recommend driving over the Millau Viaduct (possibly best south to north - i.e. on return trip) and stopping in the alps somewhere en route one way.

WARNING! WARNING!
On July the 1st, French road rules are changing.
All roads default speed will be 80 km/h, (50 mph) reduced from 90 km/h (60mph). Needless to say, some of us are not happy. When living in a rural area, our commute is going to take quite a bit longer.

It's looking like -

2 nights Cologne
2 nights Black Forest
1 night somewhere?
2 nights Florence
6 nights Rome

then a few stopovers on the short drive home :D
