Felt a little inspired by your 2013 thread...so thought i'd join in.
Have spells where I read a lot, but never really know what to read.

Have decided therefore to look at some of the classics I touched upon in school, and will re-read them because this time 'I want to'

Indeed, though I started with this one, yet his better book is his original 'Ultramarathon Man' book. Run! is very readable, but it does have plenty of 'filler' and comes across slightly as being published to cash in on the success of the first book, without really adding that much to the original.

I think other books like Born to Run (Christopher MacDougall), Running With The Kenyans (Adharanand Finn) and Eat and Run (Scott Jurich) were more enjoyable for me.

Hope you dont mind if I join edmo33 in posting here too.
Really got back into reading last year after a few years without doing any at all and your thread has also inspired me to keep a record.

It was the Song of Ice and Fire series by G.R.R. Martin that got me back into it and after that I tried a couple of classics; The Holmes novels, Fahrenheit 451 and Catch 22.
So whilst I await the next book in the SOIAF series I have read so far this year....

01 Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan (started in 2013)
02 Broken Angels - Richard Morgan
03 Woken Furies - Richard Morgan
04 Killing Floor - Lee Child
05 Die Trying - Lee Child
06 Tripwire - Lee Child
07 The Visitor - Lee Child
08 Echo Burning - Lee Child
09 Without Fail - Lee Child
10 Persuader - Lee Child
11 The Enemy - Lee Child

Im finding I really enjoy a good series of novels, especially ones with great protagonists like Takeshi Kovacs and Jack Reacher.

As you might guess, I'm a big fan of the Richard Morgan books!

If you like the George RR Martin books, you could give Steven Erikson's 'Malazan' series a try.

Yes I had noticed!

Cheers for the recommendation Tak, will look into that series once I finish with Jack Reacher. Or I may stick with some more crime fiction - really enjoying the Lee Child books. Although quite forgettable once read they are great stories, with a great character.

I think you're in my vein of characters here :-) Love Reacher and Myron & Win. Don't neglect Cobens standalones like "Tell no one" & "Gone for good". For a little injection of Dan Brown into your story Scott Mariani's Ben Hope is good. If you're still hankering for Reacherfodder - look at David Baldacci John Puller books. Also perhaps his Will Robie series. Matt Hilton's Joe Hunter also in the Reacher vein. With Robie moving toward the Assassins; Tom Woods Victor novels are superb, as are Derek Haas Columbus books and Mark Greaneys Courtland Gentry stories. For something a little different Brett Battles does a good line with Jonathan Quinn - a "cleaner" without being euphemistic. Back to crime heros my sister recently got me into Stephen J Cannells (he of 80's cheese lol) Shane Scully books and they are really very good. Lastly you've probably sampled Michael Connellys works, particularly Harry Bosch so I'll mention Simon Kernicks books before ending. Must have a look to Richard Morgan myself :-)

Thanks for the recommendations BFM! Really pleased to have more suggestions along the lines of my current obsession with these type of books. I will add your suggestions to my to read list.

Tak recommended Richard Morgan to me. Altered Carbon is excellent.

37 The Forgotten - David Baldacci
38 The Gray Man - Mark Greaney
39 On Target - Mark Greaney
40 Ballistic - Mark Greaney
41 Dead Eye - Mark Greaney

Enjoyed the Myron Bolitar books, pretty witty and a great couple of characters in Myron and Win. But since then, thanks to Beerfuelledman, I have read Tom Wood's Victor the Assassin books and Mark Greaney's Courtland Gentry books. These are superb! With both characters now easily my favourites. If I was to be pushed I would say the Courtland Gentry ones edge it, but not by much.
I highly recommend them.

Thanks again to BFM for his suggestions - some real gems there.

The new Reacher is up next - not too impressed by the reviews but we'll see.

Perhaps you lot can give me a suggestion of something to read. I just finished the Gunslinger series by Stephen King and an searching for something new. I don't necessarily want another 8 book epic but I do like "non-traditional" sort of tales. Anything I should give a look at?

Are those the 'Dark Tower' books by Stephen King ? I have those on my bookshelf at home after picking them up for about 10p each at a booksale at work. Was going to start them after I finished the Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones) but I started the Reacher series and since then I cant get enough of the loner/antihero style main character.

For something non-traditional Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon is excellent - a kind of sci fi/detective story.

Aside from that one, as in my post above I highly recommend the Courtland Gentry and Victor the Assassin books.

Yes those are the Dark Tower books I am referring to. I really enjoyed them and even went so far as to get the graphic novels that were made after the series completion. It is such a long series that it occupied me for quite some time and now left wanting more. Thank you for the suggestions, I will check them out and let you know what I thought.

That's fantastic! Should keep me going for a few months then. Read 5 more chapters last night. Really is great work for a first novel.

Another recommendation from me:

Check out Jonathan Maberry. His first book Patient Zero, his second The Dragon Factory, and his latest, King of Plagues.

You'll get to know his lead character Joe Ledger.
