The author Robert Jordan died before completing the work but worked closely with Brandon Sanderson during the last few months of his life to explain his copious notes and the storyline.
Lord of Chaos
A Crown of Swords
The Path of Daggers
Winter's Heart
Crossroads of Twilight
Knife of Dreams
The Gathering Storm
Towers of Midnight
A Memory of Light
Started this series back in the early 90s and after a long, long break I started more or less where I left off and am now on "The Gathering Storm"
Oddly enough I am also starting on Pratchett in between the Jordan books
They are a good counter-balance to each other depending on mood I think.
Hornet - I agree with Surprised, Jordan can spend chapters describing glares, stares, anger states, clothing cuts, accents, scenery, architecture and is very slow at times with too many threads being opened up which really makes you loose the will to live.
That said they are a great read; beautifully and lovingly crafted even if a bit over indulgent, hence the length between books. There is a prequel which you could read first or after a few books in.
Raymond Feist's Magician series might be a decent shout for you, the first book is a standalone so you're not committed to a whole series.
