Just looking for my own purposes and Liverpool bought him in Feb 2010 (2 and a half years ago - he was only 15 then). Wiki says it was £600k rising to £6m. Doesn't sound like QPR did much wrong in negotaiataing that at the time.Jonathan wrote:Well his point really, is not what we could get, but why the academy is selling players. Mind you that is partly from a Daily Mirror "10 things you didn't know about.." article and number 1 is that he was born in London. He didn't emigrate here (from his birth country Jamaica) til he was 5

Re: QPR 2012/13 General Chat & Starting X1 Thread
Nice debate on this thread - very interesting. Watching QPR's dealings with interest - it does smack of last-minute panic buying, but they've clearly got the financial muscle and the will to make these moves, so good luck to them. As you say, Sparky has a job on his hands to try and build a team from the expensively-assembled individuals. You have to think, with the quality they have, that they'll be fine this year... but it may be a rough month or two while they sort themselves out, IMO.Jonathan wrote:I did also mean to mention that fan base is a proper worry, though. Fernandes has gone on record of wanting a new stadium (Loftus Road capacity is c18,000) of 30,000 or more, but we won't ever get those numbers attending, and if he is basing future revenue on that.....
All in stark contrast to my own team (Reading) of course - the colour of the shirts seems to be the only similarity We have spent less than £10m (btw no promoted club has managed to stay up after spending under £10m since.... Reading, when we came up last time!). Our buys have been modest by comparison and were completed before the start of the season to allow the team to bed in - but there has been significant change, with 3-4 of those new boys now commanding a place in the first XI.
Quite a contrast.
But was also interested to see the comment above re the fan base - I'd have expected QPR to have at least as big a fan base as us, but we will be expecting to pretty much fill the Madstad (capacity just over 24,000) for each home game this year and have plans to extend the stadium if we stay up. It can be fairly easily extended up to 38,000, it was originally built with that possibility in mind, but we'd probably do an initial extension to circa 30,000.

We have bedded in OK in the Capital One Cup, Hog.
I know a few deals are announced as undisclosed, but I would just like to point out that up to 27th August, we had only physically spent £6.5m - putting us 16th out of 20 on the board - and Diakite was loaned in January and signed permanently this month. Of course salaries in the case of free transfers are higher, and we seem to be giving out worryingly long contracts, too - but worth pointing out all the same.

Fair point re the £6.5m, hadn't realised that so many had joined for free. Just did some digging and noticed that the £6.5m total figure is the same as they spent on a certain SWP a while back and that the signings of Granero and Yoshida will (allegedly) take the total up to £12m.
Although as you say it's often more about the salary (and siging-on fees etc) than the headline transfer fee - on a more modest scale, we needed our Russian owner's money to outbid Fulham for Pog, even though he was "free", and QPR have clearly been spending some serious money this summer in the same way.

Sparky wants to win silverware. He won't be putting out much of a reserve side. Still, at least you can concentrate on the league.Hogmeister wrote:Fair point re the £6.5m, hadn't realised that so many had joined for free. Pog will prove a great signing for you I reckon - in fact I was surprised you bagged him. We still don't have a really good guy up front, but there is talk of Klasnic - although anyone we sign now will have to wait until after the international break to get a game. I would like to see Reading stay up, if that helps

Well spotted, Bunners - noticed that mistake after I'd made the original post, and wondered whether anyone would pick up on it. That's the danger of taking "facts" from random websites - the website I found had him listed as a £2m buy by QPR

I think QPR have signed a lot of rubbish but there is also a bit of quality in there that will see them ok.
Sparky's future however will depend on the expectations of the Board..

Re: QPR 2012/13 General Chat & Starting X1 Thread
Nice balanced line-up and peformance last night against Everton. Granero looks absolutely head-and-shoulders above anyone else on the pitch. Taraabt had a great disciplined game and even Diakite managed to keep his head together Apart from the daft goal and the odd slip-up, the back four were great, especially Traore and Bosingwa.
Hopefully that is the last we will see of SWP starting, unless he really starts pulling things together.
I think we still need a goalscorer, though.

Re: QPR 2012/13 General Chat & Starting X1 Thread
Any info on the main penalty taker? Could it be Taarabt?
QPR have had two from the start of pre-season, one scored by Taarabt (with Cisse on the bench) and one missed by Cisse (Taarabt on the bench). Zamora was on the pitch in both cases.
It's looking good if it's only between Adel and Cisse (who isn't starting games right now), but I'm afraid Granero could also have a chance as their most important player. He also used to take pens for Getafe.

To be fair he was Chelsea's player of the season in 2008 (four years ago) where we finished 2nd. He'll do alright at a West Ham/QPR.

He does seem like a decent, genuine player who wants to do well. I think he genuinely wanted to play and do well at Liverpool ('boyhood fan' and all that) but that hasn't happened - possibly leading to an almost mental-block/problem and an inability to really perform.Dixon wrote:To be fair he was Chelsea's player of the season in 2008 (four years ago) where we finished 2nd. He seemed to do OK at Lille but not really set the world on fire (4 goals, 38 apearances - actually marginally worse goalscoring record than at Liverpool, 5 in 42) and has had some OK games for Liverpool.
There is a reasonable chance he could refind his mojo at QPR or WHam but I'm not sure I'd be rushing to take that gamble if I was in Arry's precarious position.
