Bouma boost for Villa
Aston Villa's Wilfred Bouma could be fit for the start of the season after manager Martin O'Neill revealed the defender may be ready to return to action in August.

Villa, though, are optimistic the 31-year-old could feature in their first game of the Premier League, at home to Wigan on 15th August, after he was included in a 26-man squad for pre-season fixtures in Spain.
O'Neill told the Express and Star.

December return for Downing
Stewart Downing has set a target of early December for his return from a foot injury.
The winger picked up the problem in action for Middlesbrough towards the end of last season and had to undergo an operation.

"The target is early December. If I'm ready before then that's a bonus. If it's after it just needs time to heal.
"I'm sure I will play before Christmas. The manager wants me 100 per cent right and is prepared to give me extra time to do it."

Davies to battle on
Curtis Davies is hoping to avoid surgery on a long-standing right shoulder injury which flared up again during the Peace Cup in Spain.
The Aston Villa defender experienced problems with the shoulder when a West Brom player and again last season.
His latest setback with the injury came against Porto in a pre-season friendly on Friday, but Villa boss Martin O'Neill insists surgery is not an option at this juncture.

Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov (shoulder) and right-back Luke Young (thigh) are already battling to be fit for the start of the campaign.

Villa swoop for Beye
Aston Villa have confirmed that they have signed Habib Beye from Newcastle on a three-year deal.

Beye can, therefore, fill in at full-back to allow the likes of Carlos Cuellar to revert to a central role, while also taking the pressure off Wilfred Bouma's return to fitness.
