Allison takes a Pool spot from our teams, it makes Lovren, VVD, TAA and Robertson even better picks though. Unlikely to concede goals due to poor goalkeeping mistakes.

Reason: I've modified this post to make the context clear, as this was originally a post made in response to Allison's move to Liverpool

Lovren wasn't first choice during the small period between when VVD bedded in and Matip got injured. Also has the disadvantage of a delayed summer hollibob.

TAA also one seemed first choice when Gomez broke.
I'm aware TAA and Lovren probably won't play the opening games because of the WC, but over the course of the season, I think that will be the main backline.

Robertson, VVD, Lovren, TAA

Probably a bit of rotation in there, but I think those 4 will be the first choice starters.

100% right... once the first couple of games are out of the way this will be the go to back four. Trent probably the most likely to be rotated with Clyne/Gomez. Matip had quite a poor season where as Lovren played well after his Wembley meltdown. The thing that I would be careful of though if you pick Lovren is that is Matip does start Klopp has a habit of bringing a CB on in the last few minutes to see out games. Can see a lot of frustration if that happens and you have him but in general he’ll start and at 5m looks an absolute bargain.

The word rotation is misused imo. It suggests equal standings and players share time.

Clyne is nowhere near the standard of TAA and hes clearly back up to him. Gomez is a centre back that only played rb covering injuries.

TAA is first choice, this is only debated by fpl managers in the advance stages of rotation disease , they should be put down out of their misery.

Being rested is NOT the same as being rotated .

Speaking as a Liverpool fan that is rubbish and misleading.

Clyne has far more experience and stature and a few caps to prove it (IIRC). Not as old as you'd think either. Probably not first choice now after injury but you can't just write him off like that.

Gomez may have started off as a CB but was largely preferred to TAA at RB in the tougher games last year til he was injured. He is a far safer pair of hands defensively but not as attacking.

I do agree TAA will probably emerge as first choice, esp with VVD making it all more solid, but it is far from cast in stone and I wouldn't stake much money or a place in my FF team on it.

Post by Billy Bongo »

Nope, not misleading at all. Clyne is way behind TAA now, are you trolling?

Also 'might emerge as the first choice'

Lol, he emerged as first choice months ago, who started the cl final? Might emerge, sorry but you are about 7 months behind .

And being a Liverpool fan doesnt make your opinion any more valid.

TAA is first choice, Clyne is back up. Gomez would cover if either were injured

To suggest otherwise is totally misleading.

I wouldn't want to make too many definitive statements about the Liverpool right back situation at this point. Alexander Arnold is probably "first choice" but it's true that Gomez was at least neck and neck with him as far into the season as March/April. Alexander Arnold only really emerged as a clear first choice near the end of the season.

I can't really remember the ins and outs off hand, but Gomez was certainly ahead of Alexander-Arnold for parts of the season. I think that Alexander-Arnold had kind of taken over as favoured player before Gomez got injured, but certainly around the time they lost to Man United and TAA had a poor game, I think there were still doubts about which one was the better option among Liverpool fans. The only time really that TAA looked like a player who would be starting every game (and I mean whether Gomez was injured or not and regardless of Clyne) was in April/May time, which was his best period of the season. Should he replicate that form, I'd say he's going to play more games than he misses.

Good goalkeeper discussion gents :)

Early season Gomez started the league games and TAA played CL games.

Gomez started 17/24 league games up to mid-Jan

Then TAA started to be preferred... i suspect they still would have continued to share game time if not for injury but TAA was first choice (Gomez started 5/16 (all comps) between mid-Jan and getting injured).

I agree with Bongo that Clyne is definitely behind in the pecking order (he would be in my book anyway).

I would hope to see Gomez as regular CB before the end of the season but who knows how he’ll recover form his injury (isn’t this is second serious injury in 2 years)?

100% agree. In my view only Allison, VVD and Robertson looks to be certain starters.

And if we take Lovrens ego into account Klopp should probably start Lovren every match aswell;

”I think people should recognize that I’m one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense I will say.”

As mentioned on another thread.....

The 4 Liverpool WC semi finalists (TAA, Mignolet, Lovren, Henderson) are only due back in training on the monday before the league season starts. And that is with only getting 3 weeks off (most are getting 4).

Also Klopp has said Salah is "fully recovered" from his shoulder injury.

Having watched our preseason games a number of patterns are emerging....

Lallana looks like he’s getting closer to where he was before his injury and will be pushing for the third midfield slot.

Keita..... is just pure class and could be the signing of the summer. He will get numbers and probably be first name on the team sheet.

Sturridge looks sharp. We all know there’s an injury just waiting to happen but when he’s in the pitch there’s no denying his class. Does feel like deja vu from the last few preseasons though.

Origi is out of his depth and I can’t see him staying. Been very very poor.

Karius looks one more mistake from a complete breakdown. I feel sorry for the lad and he needs taking out of the spotlight.

Fabinho seems like he might need a bit of time to settle but it’s very early days. Could be our penalty taker but still not really an FPL option.

VVD is just a Rolls Royce of a defender. Can see him getting a few more goals this year from set pieces.

Robertson has picked off exactly where he left off. Not getting forward quite so much but that looks tactical. When he does his delivery is spot on.

Matip injured again. That spot next to VVD was looking like his. I’d expect Gomez to be giving some time now at CB to prepare for a start against West Ham. It’ll be pretty obvious over the next few games if that’s the plan. That would leave Clyne short term at RB. He’s looked OK actually so no worries about him starting there.

Salah and Mane back now so could feature against City on Thursday, if not then definitely Utd Saturday (possibly Shaqiri too). Brazil boys not until next weekend against Napoli.

Henderson, Lovren and Trent won’t feature in preseason so won’t start at least GW1.

LFC statement on Matip-

Joel Matip will leave Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States to undergo rehabilitation on the muscle injury he sustained against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

The defender picked up the issue midway through the first half of the International Champions Cup fixture and was immediately substituted.
Though the muscle injury suffered in his upper leg is not considered to be a long-term concern, Matip will not be available for selection in the remaining two games in America.
He is therefore returning to Merseyside and will continue his recovery at Melwood.

Possibly/probably.

I think the Brazilian WC players start training this coming Monday so that gives them 2 weeks.

Allison definitely 'back' Monday as noted in reports about no senior keepers available for weekend friendly (Karius has slight injury, Mignolet longer hol, Ward sold).

Other than Karius also minor injuries/issues for Keita, Clyne, Wijnaldum (see LFC site). No reason they won't be ready for day 1 that I know of (Matip unsure).

Shaqiri may make debut in tonight's friendly but don't expect many minutes for him.

I would be interested to see what some of you think on my thoughts on the Liverpool defence. Any feedback welcome.

Robertson is arguably the most likely defender to hit a big haul. His attacking threat makes him very promising at £6m. However, i think there could be the odd occasion when he is rested. Maybe a home game here and there against bottom 6 opposition which is when you want him on the pitch the most.

VVD is most likely to be the top scoring defender in terms of points and goals. I would say he is nailed if he's fit. Whether he is worth the extra million compared to TAA and Lovren though is debatable.

Right back looks like being the most rotated area once again. I'm steering clear of TAA for this reason. I would be happier to look here if Gomez/Clyne were to leave the club ahead of GW1.

Lovren will be the preferred partner to VVD and looks the better £5m option. He gets the odd goal and looks a safer choice than TAA. How much Matip plays though remains to be seen.

Those fancying a £5m defender may be wiser to wait until GW9 and look elsewhere. TAA and Lovren won't play in at least GW1 and Liverpool face tot, SOU, che, MNC in GW5-8. Watching how Klopp chooses his defence and seeing how Liverpool settle into the season might be a better idea.

Still don't understand why everyone believes Lovren is ahead of Matip....

Allison, Robertson and VVD should be on everybody's shortlist for any FF game. Wouldn't touch the rest with a barge pole due to uncertainties, which no game 1 teamsheet will solve due to injury/late return issues.

In FPL we have a more explicit limited attention span than TFF where Transfers are for whenever, and a cheap Defender for a few matches has a certain appeal. That's not related to Lovren and his Aliesue quotes etc, but some may believe him\them. A cheap defender for a few weeks would be rather handy, especially now Coleman looks like a prematurely busted attempt at proving Einstein's insanity definition.

re the above and reurning WC'ers: Giroud was on Chelski's bench according to ESPN bod so back in training.....

No idea on prices in FPL but whoever starts at RB or 2nd CB in GW1 could well change for your "GW2" - not that you could be 100% on the GW1 teamsheet either (lots of bluff re returning players' fitness and extent of rests, see Giroud). Are they cheap enough options to have one week appeal??

PS Have discovered that Clyne returned home due to a child birth, which has happened so presumably OK to get back to work (and blur the RB issue further) now.

PPS Match just kicked off
Liverpool team: Grabara, Camacho, Van Dijk, Klavan, Moreno, Fabinho, Milner, Lallana, Salah, Mane, Solanke.

Substitutes: Kelleher, Gomez, Sturridge, Grujic, Shaqiri, Robertson, Origi, Phillips, Jones, Markovic, Ojo, Woodburn, Chirivella.

No Karius, Clyne, Keita, Wijnaldum or any late WC returners

I haven't looked re prices etc tbh for 1 match but it could be as it's WHam at Anfield (I cnt be assed thinking of a WHam pun  ) For some reason Gomez appeals as he may play CB? Not checked his FPL price what with subs, so can carry a cheapish defender who either doesn't play or gets CS's.

Martial returned for the same reason as Clyne, spooky :?

4-1 to Liverpool

28mins - 1-0 Mane (pen, Salah)
31 - [1-1 Pereira free kick]
HT - Five second-half changes for Liverpool - Shaqiri, Ojo, Woodburn, Kelleher and Phillips on for Klavan, Lallana, Grabara, Mane and Salah.
64 - Sturridge, Gomez, Robertson, Jones, Grujic and Chirivella are on. Solanke, Moreno, Van Dijk, Camacho, Milner and Fabinho are off.
65 - 2-1 Sturridge (Shaqiri, ?) He's literally only been on the pitch a matter of seconds, but Daniel Sturridge has put Liverpool back in front. Shaqiri does superbly to hold off Bailly inside the area before rolling it back to the striker, who - almost nonchalantly - slots it into the bottom corner. 2-1 to the Reds at The Big House.
74 - 3-1 Ojo (pen, Robertson)
82 - 4-1 Shaqiri (Woodburn, ?) Wow. Wow. Amazing. Amazing. Xherdan Shaqiri marks his Liverpool debut with the most sensational of goals. Ben Woodburn keeps a loose ball alive near the touchline on the left of the area. He looks up and crosses back into the middle for Shaqiri, who finds the net with a stunning overhead kick. What a way to mark your first appearance for the Reds!

"Jürgen Klopp's team now return to Merseyside ahead of next week's training camp in France."

(not seen any of it yet so no idea if the 4th goal is worthy of 2 Wows, 2 Amazings, 1 Sensational, 1 Stunning and 1 exclamation mark. Stats had Liverpool 16-3 up on shots and with 65% possession, 87% passing accuracy (v74))

EDIT - Seen the Shaqiri goal now. Truly a proper world class overhead kick worthy of any number of superlatives. Textbook execution and connection. None of this Rooney off-the-shin 'fake worldie' malarkey.

TAA joined up with the squad's training camp in France today, an early return from his hollibobs but probably wasn't overly tired from a tough WC.

Brazilians started back yesterday.

Interesting VVD is 75% to play on Saturday.

Unless the rib injury which he was managing on Saturday which happened vs PSG has developed to be more serious, i make him 100% to be starting on Saturday.

He won't start tomorrow.

2 random guesses - 75% and 100%. I'll add a third - somewhere between the two.

FFS (assuming that is your source) only use 25/50/75/100 and, as he is a doubt, I would have said 75% too if I was them.

He may even start tomorrow, as he had a slight rest on saturday, but that is 25% at best. Lovren has been training so I'll guess he starts alongside Matip. Maybe Gomez as he was mostly rested saturday. Clyne & Moreno at FB. Mignolet, Fabinho, Sturridge, Shaqiri etc all to start. Probably Keita too.

Hmmm, so there was a "Team" Meeting this week and the 2 most defensive Mids start plus Shaq. Could this mean a return to "scoring more as opposed to winning scrappy ie with an eye on CS's?

Admittedly it is "only" Fulham, but it could mean a change of emphasis FF wise - but, before dumping defenders for Shaq, they still had 17 CS's last season, 3rd to the 18 and 19 from Manchester.
