Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
For those thinking Stoke might be able to keep it tight at the back again, then Erik Pieters at £2m might be a decent pick. The Dutch international should be the first choice left back (one of our problem areas), but based on pre-season games, there's always the possibility of him playing a more attacking, wing back type game.
Stoke also have young Marc Muniesa, brought in on a free transfer from Barcelona. He will be cheap as chips, has looked composed on the ball in pre-season, and might even claim the left back spot, allowing Pieters to play a more advanced role on the left. This would be a bit more of a risky strategy now, but worth watching the first couple of games and forming a view.

Before anyone gets too excited, Pieters is 3.4m in TFF - worth keeping an eye on but not quite the bargain first thought!Takeshi Kovacs wrote:For those thinking Stoke might be able to keep it tight at the back again, then Erik Pieters at £2m might be a decent pick.

Ah, I only play Sun Dream team, so comment related to that game. Should have been more specific.

Any one have a good call on the starting back 4? I am looking at a 4.5 option and am not sure how Willson or Wilkinson will fit in.

Any Stoke fans know whether Jermain Pennant will get much game time I see he has just signed a 1yr deal and guess he is in direct competition for a starting spot with Kightly and Etherington and possibly Walters if he plays out wide again?

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Difficult with a new manager coming in, but Begovic, Shawcross and Huth are nailed on starters at the back.
The left back spot will probably go to Pieters, but with Muniesa looking impressive as well, there is an element of risk in that pick.
Right back could be Wilson, Cameron, Shotton or Wilkinson. Way too open to call.
Hughes has experimented a bit with a 3 man midfield in pre-season. I expect N'Zonzi will be the only guaranteed starter with Adam and Whelan also likely to get a good chunk of playing time. Palacios might be a surprise inclusion, but his fitness is very dodgy.
Upfront is where we have big problems. If we play 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 then I'd expect Walters to start most weeks. If we go 4-3-3 then it's more questionable. Crouch may be off to QPR and looked a shadow of himself last season, as did Etherington. I'd avoid picking any Stoke strikers at the moment.

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Erik Peters has nailed down the left back position, and he likes to bomb forward and get crosses in (so far of variable quality).
New additions in the transfer window:
Marko Arnautovic - winger / possible striker (Austrain international bought from Werder Bremen)
Althought apparently a bit of a nutcase, he's highly thought of, takes a mean free kick, and might even take over the responsibility for taking penalties. Big guy 6'3+ but a technically skilled player.
Stephen Ireland - can Mark Hughes pull of a 'Phoenix from the ashes' with the enfant terrible Ireland. If he can, and he gets back to his best, then he could be a little gem (and I don't mean he'll play like a lettuce).
Potential for Kenwyne Jones to get a bit more pitch time this term, though it's far from guaranteed.

I see Marc Wilson has been playing CM, is this his new position or is he just filling in?
Any insights would be welcome.

Looks like he will play just in front of the back four.

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Why is Hughes not playing Arnautovic much more instead of coming on from the bench.
From the little I saw on MOTD in the game vs Man City he looks a very classy and intelligent player and for only 2million bargain of the year.
I can see him going for 15million min next summer if he carries on playing this way.

I will admit I had my doubts about Hughes at Stoke but he has got you playing well, and I was very impressed by Arnautovic (never heard of him before) but the little touches vs man City were fantastic.

Hi questions for stokies who is captain and vice captain for you ?
Apart from walters who else takes pens ?
Who are your main free kick specialists ?
Is marc Wilson likely to be the midfielder position ? As he is listed as a defender i think be value he plays midfield what your impression of his play in this role
Also whe is shea back I think he could prove value- great player in America.
I asking coz I'm doing fpl and wanted some advice thanks and of course good luck this season

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Fans getting frustrated with Arnautovic now, and his seeming lack of effort on the pitch. If things don't go right, appears to sulk a bit. Needs to sort himself out, start playing for the team, or he'll be getting less and less playing time.Achiles74 wrote:He does look a immense player and for only 2million.SUZYKINS wrote:Only just signed himAchiles74 wrote:Why is Hughes not playing Arnautovic much more instead of coming on from the bench.

Shame, as I was hoping for big things.
Stephen Ireland proving a decent loan signing though, which we will hopefully make permanent in January.

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Likely back for for me would be:
Right Back - Phil Bardsley (only real decent 'specialist' right back in squad)
Centre Back - Robert Huth
Centre Back - Ryan Shawcross (captain and nailed on starter)
Left Back - Erik Pieters
Some words of caution:
Robert Huth was injured (knee) for a lot of last season, and there must be a possibility of this recurring at some point.
Erik Pieters could come under pressure from Marc Muniesa, who will be in his 2nd season at Stoke, and the ex-Barcelona man was growing into the team in the second half of last season.
Others who will play at times could be:
Geoff Cameron could cover right back (where he played most of last season).
Marc Wilson could cover left back or centre-back (or even midfield)
Dionatan Texeira - raw, young Brazilian, could cover centre back, but wouldn't be surprised if loaned to Championship team to get experience)
In short, Shawcross is best bet for playing virtually all games. Bardsley should get plenty of time at right back. Huth will play a lot if knee holds up. Pieters or Muniesa? Who knows, but I think Pieters will start off with the jersey.

Re: Stoke 2013/14 General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Think we'll see a lot of this line up:
Begovic
Bardsley
Huth
Shawcross
Pieters (Muniesa)
N'Zonzi
Whelan (Sidwell)
Arnautovic
Ireland (Odemwingie)
Bojan (very interested in his price)
Diouf
Think Crouch and Adam (if not sold) will spend a lot of time benchwarming. We're getting to a nice position now where there's good competition for many positions. Similarly, Marc Wilson and Geoff Cameron might find themselves with less playing time than last season.
We're still trying to bring in Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool, so that would add extra competition for the left wing slot.
