Re: Arsenal General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Good comeback by the Gunners at Goodison today. When Everton finally ran out of steam, and attacking ideas, Arsenal were able to exploit the obvious weakness in the Everton defence - Seamus Coleman (terrific attacker, but very loose defender).
Although a lot of Gooners don't seem to rated Giroud, IMHO Arsenal always look a more effective team when he's playing. Sanchez maybe undercooked (and overweight?), but signs are that he might be a tad too combustible for the Premiership?
I bet Wenger wished he knew that Fabregas was going to be available in the close season before he splashed out 50 large ones on Ozil. The German is a wonderful touch player, but the absolute epitome of a 'luxury player'. Cazorla offers more in my view and probably plays better with Wilshire (as, of course, did Cesc).

I cannot fathom how management, players and the media are talking in terms of the second leg on Wednesday being a formality against Beskitas.
Arsenal have to WIN and this game is as likely to end in a scoring draw or home defeat if the ist leg and present form are anything to go by.
Arsenal will also be out of Europe, no Europa to fall back into.

Do I let that one go unchecked? Nah.AkNotSpur wrote:Good comeback by the Gunners at Goodison today. When Everton finally ran out of steam, and attacking ideas, Arsenal were able to exploit the obvious weakness in the Everton defence - Seamus Coleman (terrific attacker, but very loose defender).
I think he's a very good defender who had a below average game - both in attack (goal excepted) and defence. Factoring in that he's played a matter of minutes since May and missed pretty much all of his pre season with an injury it probably wouldn't be reasonable to judge his abilities on that game.
Also, I wouldn't call hopelessly overhitting a cross exploiting a weakness.
First goal he did poorly. Really lazy stuff from both him and McCarthy to allow Cazorla all the time in the world, although both looked spent well before that.
Very unusual to see an Everton team that jaded. So I guess you have to lay that one at Martinez and his staff for the preparation and lack of changes. You could see the legs had gone at 2-0... He really should have been a bit more realistic and reinforced midfield.

Not sure what was the most embarassing aspect.
Arteta stubbornly refusing to pass to a team mate.
Ramsey showboating when we were 2 nil down.
The frantic 5 minute search for shinpads in the dug out.
Or Wenger picking his nose while his team burned.
It has to be...

Re: Arsenal General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Is there any real confidence we can get anything out of this game.
I have read one or two articles with Per & OAC (I think) expecting us to get 'a better result' at the Bridge this time, not saying much, it couldn't be much worse.
No real braggadocio from any player yet, but we still have Saturdays press.
Would be a fascinating post match interview with AW if we got another nose picking, zip fiddling, arms flapping, 6 love spanking.

Unlucky Arsenal v Monaco. TV pundits and commentators are so results led in their comments that bad luck just doesn't seem to get a mention in their 'expert analysis' I watched the game on Astra Supersports and Petit and some other knee jerk was on there screaming for wholesale changes. Arsenal could easily have won 4-2 or 5-3 on the balance of play and chances. Giroud had a bad night but it wasn't for lack of trying and generally he's had a good season. Centre backs probably need replacing to succeed at the very top level but elsewhere the performance was good. Phil Neville a joke.

Re: Arsenal General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Luck is something that can only take you so far.
Would you put all Girouds 6 misses down to bad luck, or a lack of composure under pressure?
When I got home last night I watched the Sky summary with Souness, Henry, and Redknapp.
Souness was bang on the money with his scathing attack on tactics, organisation, and individual performances, all were poor.
He got on to something I was saying months back, after the Swansea & Anderlecht games.
Wengers lack of management during games, prefers to sit back and watch instead of getting instructions across.
Once again we have the sight of Wenger trying to distance himself from a shocking defensive performance, more are now beginning to see through this regular charade.

Re: Arsenal General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Arsenal's problems with cavalier defending, most notably illustrated last night by Mertesacker, have been well documented. Gary Neville has been particularly scathing on the instances where everyone pushes forward leaving no cover when the ball is lost and they're caught on the break with their pants down.
I have to agree though that an awful lot of analysis is results driven and Arsenal did, despite a pretty shocking below par performance, have several gilt edged opportunities, most notably Giroud but also the Ox when Walcott inadvertently got in the way. They could easily have won the game if they'd converted their chances, as goals do change games, and in turn may have resulted in far less gung-ho defending.

Sure, you could argue Arsenal were unlucky in front of goal, but there was no need to abandon any kind of shape and concede three. When gung-ho started to take over, where was the guidance from the bench?liquidfootball2 wrote:Arsenal's problems with cavalier defending, most notably illustrated last night by Mertesacker, have been well documented. Monaco are one of the dullest teams in Europe and hardly ever score more than one, and had a makeshift defence. Losing 3-1 at home was a disgrace.

Baffled by the quote from Wenger that '72 points will get 4th spot', but it does underline his mediocre ambitions.
He is saying its cool to take 21 points from the last 33, or we can afford to lose 4 from the last 11 games and should still attain our goal.
Personally I would say to the players we want to get 84 points, that is try to win the final 11 games and lets see where that takes us.
It says everything you need to know about Wengers style of management, and the stagnancy of ambition at board level.
So the club is aiming to win about 70% of the remaining league games, I will adjust my ticket purchasing to a similar level.
Wenger "Look, have you seen the quality of the teams behind us? Southampton."........ priceless stuff, the mega rich South coast club has now become our rival.

Yes that's the way i see it, Utd's fixtures turn next week while Arsenal have a nice run to come.
Liverpool are in great form but Arsenal only have to beat one of them for another top four finish.
I can only really see them finishing third or fourth and think fifth very unlikely considering the fixtures.

The point is why is Wenger talking of top 4? we are already 3rd, lets aim to win them all, not just 7 and chase down City, and who knows? maybe Chelsea could hit a blip, even more chance of that if we can exert some pressure on top 2.AkNotSpur wrote:In reality, it's now a contest between Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool for 3/4th places in the Premiership...and the FA Cup. At the very least staying 3rd avoids the usual CL play off.
Its all down to motivating your team, and that goes for any business.
You would rather hear your manager encouraging you to become the best in the field, than becoming 4th best.

Good point as you can easily have another Besiktas, no foregone conclusion and City are inconsistent enough to offer chasers hope.

Re: Arsenal General Chat & Starting XI Thread
Maybe Wenger has become a realist.
I'd suggest that Arsenal fans agitating for his removal should be careful what they wish for. Looking at the experience of other clubs, the first result might be dropping outside the top 4 in the first season of a new regime.

I think Chelsea would need to drop 12 points from 12 games for Arsenal to draw level with all 11 wins.
Get down the bookies if you fancy that all to happen. I'd give you 100 to 1 if they don't.

Why do you give any credence to what any manager says relating to their ambition or the true state of their injured players?
Their responses are governed to throw doubt in the minds of their rivals.
It's all about mind games not about the truth

Lets not get too downhearted.
We can still win the treble, Spirited Second Leg Performance Trophy is assured, Wenger Trophy is almost clinched, and probably only Liverpool can prevent us from lifting the FA cup again.
