Chernobyl was a disappointing series, no local accents/subtitles, came across as anti Soviet propaganda, I would have expected there would have been scenes of the Russians discussing Windscale and Three Mile Island in the show and how the British and Americans reacted to their problems, I file this show under Western propaganda and rate it overall as poor.
Why am I not surprised you had this view, comrade.
Not sure where the propoganda was unless you know something the rest of the free world doesn't? This was the worst nuclear accident ever - I fail to see the relevance of Windscale and Three Mile Island tbh?
While I don't think it's the best show of all time I thought it was excellent and certainly the best series I've seen this year.
It was a HBO/SKY effort, The British and Americans had their own disasters [not to the same degree but there but for the grace of God and all that], the Russians would have been trying to control and contain the situation as well minimising panic and trying to show the World they were dealing with it, they would have been discussing how the Brits and Yanks dealt with their issues, its obvious, did the Brits and Yanks cover up a lot of details, did they evacuate, did they allow access to the press both local and foreign, who did they blame, yet we did not see that and it was a British/American product.
One reviewer talked about it being like a horror film and I can see the parallels as well, so they would have been better served by telling their British and American target audience that this could happen to you, that the horror you are watching could happen in your country and indeed did happen but not on the same scale, but they choose not to do that, why ?
They run with the line of the KGB trying to smooth things over, well the KGB would have been discussing what the American and British agents of the state did surely.
And what topped it off was the British accents, it was hard to take the actors seriously with such twangs.
As regards threatening to chuck the scientist out of the helicopter and then threating to shoot him on more than one occasion was nonsense in my book and told my wife that during the show, in the end they told him straight they weren't going to do that and they were going to let him go so why did the makers show episode after episode of threats, the nuclear industry/nuclear weapons industry is the most secretive in the World, what would the British have done.....hmm ?, perhaps the main British scientist would have committed suicide in highly unusual unlikely circumstances and im not thinking about the Welsh guy and the Iraq war im thinking about the Scottish guy and all his nuclear documents missing shot in the head a few times, gun found a long way away, how can you do that when they say it suicide and why wont the authorities realise police/medical records etc.
I digress, a main man going to see the miners as if and then the miners working in the nude, the woman scientist they admitted they made her up, the whole thing came across as anti Russian propaganda to me.
