Zimmerman wrote: 30 Aug 2019, 13:40 Then again, I only watched the first episode of Killing Eve this week. If it wasn’t for the fact that everybody I know absolutely loves/loved it... that would be getting jettisoned. Will stick with it for now.
As I’ve said before, I don’t think you can judge anything on one episode. Some shows grab you straight away, others take the best part of a series to do so.

I took a few episodes with Succession but am now hooked, I mentioned likeable characters recently in terms of Stranger Things, but with this it’s hateable characters that make it compelling!

At last, someone else who likes Succession!

Sadly though, the 2nd series isn't a patch on the first :(

Isn’t the second only a few episodes in? Or is it bingeable on Sky box sets?

I watched this. I thought it tailed off a bit (and agree it was tricky to follow).

But I was fascinated by the premise and so read the book. I then ended up reading the full trilogy, it was really engrossing. The British author, Richard Morgan, has a rollicking writing style.

The 2nd series is 3 episodes in, screens every Monday. But there are no new ideas, it's running on empty. So I've bailed out - too many other things to do, music to listen to, books to read etc

Well, three episodes seems quick to bail out on something you liked first time around... but I suppose it beats “hate-watching” something for several series just to rant about how crap it has become, which most of us do on occasions!

Finished Mindhunter S2. Really good.

New series on Netflix called Unbelievable which me and Mrs HH are enjoying so far 3 episodes in. Tough subject matter (rape) but fast paced and well done so far.

Brassic really grows on you. Probably best thing on telly at the moment.

Quite intrigued by The Capture and less so by The Confession. Think they are called something like that anyway. Both 2 episodes in on old school telly, no binge available (which is horrible these days!). First benefits from Holliday Grainger but the other only has Martin Freeman as Martin Freeman. No idea how he gets roles as all his "characters" blur into one be they cop, hobbit, Watson, Office worker or whatever he was in Fargo - all basically just him with very little character coverage.

A BBC flagship drama will always be better than a competing ITV one, first rule of terrestrial TV...

Done 4 of Brassic. Still enjoying it although last episode possibly the weakest.

Watching the capture like you old school week by week .... good so far.

Always thought that was a middle class / Hyacinth Bouquet / snobbish opinion (although one adhered to in my working class childhood home and many similar! - I felt a real rebel preferring Tiswas over Swap Shop) but it is right about 95% of the time.

Fleabag - absolutely brilliant.

Killing Eve (S1) - struggled for a couple of episodes (only the plaudits kept me with it). Really enjoyed it in the middle... then a really lame final episode I felt.

Comer IS the show. Fabulous acting and a really great character/role.

ITV think you just need to throw a couple of big name actors at something to make it good. Whereas the BBC are actually making things that are in the same league as HBO etc. produce now.

Well, I mean things that hold their own on the global stage. Even if they do tend to be limited to six episode series, unlike their American rivals (still, quality over quantity, I guess...)

Anyway, I guess even HBO puts out some flops, we just don’t hear much about them...

Sanditon is the worst TV drama I've seen this year - one costume drama cliche after another (apart from the occasional gratuitous sex scene, presumably to keep people watching and to ensure Jane Austen keeps turning in her grave). Andrew Davies needs to call it a day and retire gracefully. Which is what I did, half way through episode 2.

PS it's on ITV, not BBC, so maybe that explains it.

It's ok as silly period dramas go. OK, I quite fancy the main actress but I might still watch it anyway.

Haven't seen any gratuitous sex though. A few naked male bums as Davies tries to balance up old series.

K Eve 2 is better ie more high camp than the 1st, but backs off taking the next step to being great and a dodgy ending again...

I must say that Pesky Blinders new series is the best by miles and musically hit the highest if highs with Atmosphere playing as a funeral cortege passes and shows the hero with the lines about walking on air and making it easy...

Finished Unbelievable on Netflix really enjoyed that with Mrs HH. Hard subject matter but very well done although a bit of a hollywood ending.

Also finished Brassic which had its moments (at it best when it was humourous) but wouldn't watch a 2nd series.

Started watching Criminal on netflix, first episode was good.

Spoiler alert

So the last episode of Peaky Blinders.

Question.

The betrayal - looks like the bookmaker with Finn who picks up the phone when Finn says we’re going to kill a fascist. Assume he’s in with Alfie maybe?

I forget the earlier scene with the book maker when he looked scared must admit I’m struggling to remember his involvement ???

Pretty crappy ending tbh massive build up then very rushed. No real big GOT send off for Aberama. Blink and you miss it. And on we go to S6.

Guess the football guy must have been in with the fascists, not with Alfie (who being Jewish wouldn’t want to spare Mosley, surely?)

Did Chief Billy Boy get away (maybe he was match fixer’s associate)? What happened to the Chinese and the drug deal? And yeah, Littlefinger’s demise was abrupt, thought he would at least get his revenge before going out with a bang... liked some of the build-up during the episode (the Charlie Strong scene etc.) but the ending was a bit rushed.

As the Guardian recap suggests, could have perhaps done with a couple more episodes (BBC seems stuck in the six-episode straitjacket for some reason). But made a change not to see Tommy go out on top, leaves plenty to pick up on next series... hopefully won’t be a two year wait.
