Takes an awfully long time to get going, offers up only a couple of excellent sequences (WW's attack on Germans occupying a village and a short, brutal fight with a German villain) and then descends in to tedious CGI overkill. Gal Gadot is quite good in the lead role, offering an appealing element to an often silly character, but the film feels schizophrenic in trying to tell two tales (war/spy thriller, WW origin story) and fails at both.
Hoping to see it later in the week so should be able to give a second opinion on this film shortly.
Watched WW earlier today and thought it was an above average comic book flick that pretty much deserves the praise it's generally been receiving, overall it did enough to get an 8/10 from me & I'd say it's worth catching on the big screen if you like the trailers .

I found T2 Trainspotting to be a bit disappointing to be honest.

Not a patch on the original and a weak story / script making it an unsatisfactory revisit. No more than 6/10 for me.

I really enjoyed Life but then I am a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan. It's basically a take on Alien but I found it quite tense after a slowish start, good twist at the end too. 8/10.

Nocturnal Animals was ok. A decent premise but didn't quite pull it off. I thought I was going to see a cinematic first; an Amy Adams film without some of her sideboob... she left it late, but it happened in the end.
7/10 (the film, not her sideboob).

Bullhead a Belgian offering. A semi violent affair but overall ok watch 8/10

Mrs Whiz and I get to the cinema about once a month these days. Best film I've seen recently was Baby Driver. Best film I've seen over the past couple of years was without doubt Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan as an Irish girl who emigrates to the States in the 1950s (97% on Rotten Tomatoes, if you're interested). Written by Nick Hornby, based on Colm Tóibín's 2009 novel. I loved everything about it - so much so that I went back the following week and watched it again. First time I've ever paid twice to see the same film (rather than wait for it to be on TV to watch it again)

High praise indeed

I remember enjoying it, but not quite that much

A decent, if not spectacular film. Well crafted and just a 'nice' film.

8/10

Have had a soft spot for Saoirse Ronan ever since we unwittingly met her a couple of years ago and being totally bowled over by how 'normal' and nice she was.

Yeah, I've seen her interviewed and like you, was struck by how normal and natural she was. So different from most of the self-adoring luvvies you see on TV.

Yes, unfortunately! First half boring, second half ludicrous. Based on that experience, I've told Mrs W that if she wants to see Atomic Blonde she'll have to go with someone else.

From the brief clips I'd seen of Atomic Blonde I thought it was looking good. However, catching up on an old Film Review and hearing more about he film, I'm not sure it's for me. Looks like a ridiculous cartoon-esque cape.

Julieta (second Spanish film in a week... totally coincidental). Pretty good. Not really a thriller in any sense, but there is a sense of tension/what happened. 8.5/10

Just watched Toy Story for the first time since I was a child, have to admit that it is a fantastic bit of cinema, and doesn't overly rely on double entendre and reference to got cheap laughs.

Ha ha I watched two films on the plane last week the latest pirates OTC which was standard stuff passed the time 7/10

Then WW. Really unnecessarily long.
Very dull start. Then mildly amusing for a bit when she enters the real world for the first time ala crocodile Dundee. But then the last hour just really dragged as we endure the inevitable marvel showdowns. I’d give it a 6/10. But really over hyped I agree.

I made it to a few international film festivals this year and offer a few recommendations. The Florida Project is set in a run-down motel in Orlando, Florida, under the shadow of Disney World. It's about forgotten, rejected Americans desperately struggling to get by in terrible conditions. William Dafoe is amazing as the crusty, but soft-hearted motel manager but it is the crazy and rambunctious motel kids you will never forget and one loving but very screwed up mom. The contrast with the wealthy folks who are off to Disney World is powerful. Best film I saw. Call Me By Your Name is the beautiful story of a young Italian man-boy, who is uncertain about his sexuality. He meets a sexy French girl and a charming male American scholar. Not for those who can't bear the depiction of gay relationships. The Other Side of Hope by Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki is the story of a Syrian refugee's struggles to stay in Finland, where the police are portrayed as heartless but ordinary folk as kind-hearted. Lots of humor amid the serious business. For the hardcore cineastes I recomment Loveless by the Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, which paints a portrait of the end of a miserable marriage that involves the disapearance of their young son who overhears his divorcing parents fighting over which will get stuck with him. It is beautifully filmed and paints a very negative portrait of Russian bureacracy. I would also recommend German-Turkish director Fatih Akin's In the Fade, a story about the racist murder of a Muslim man and his daughter in Germany, focusing on his widow's fight for justice. Got a standing ovation in Toronto. If you are familiar with Michael Haneke (Cache, The White Ribbon, Amour) and like his work even though his films are VERY dark, you might try the ironically named Happy End, the follow-up to Amour. Finally I really liked Disobedience, a film by Sebastien Lelio about the daughter of a strict rabbi, who comes back home after his death and clashes with the Hasidic establishment. If these sound like your kind of films, check them out when they pass through. There were a number of others I liked but these were the best in my humble opinion.

Watch most of my films on planes rather than cinemas, and often go for something safe (there really isn't any limit on the number of times I can watch Fargo, In Bruges or the Big Lebowski).

Did watch a couple of new ones recently though:

'The Circle'. Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. Good idea (tech / social media / digital life / surveillance turning into Big Brother), really badly done. 1/10. Maybe it's just aimed at teens (although that's probably insulting teenagers).

'Gold' - Matthew McConaughy as a Gonzo gold prospector straight out of a Hunter S Thompson book. Probably no great artistic merit but enjoyable 7/10

'Going in Style' - Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. Feel good heist movie. film probably only deserves a 5 or 6 but the 3 main characters raise it up to a 7 .5/10 just for the joy of seeing them in 'action'.

Saw an interesting film on the plane last night. "After Winter, Spring", a documentary about rural french peasant farming and the changing way of life in the wake of modern large farms and low global food prices. Not preachy at all, just some wonderful warm people talking about their way of life, and some fantastic scenery.

Not for everyone (and not for the squeamish either in a couple of places), but if you get the chance its worth a watch. Difficult to rate tbh as its not your normal film, but an 8 at least for me.

(on Air France for at least December if you find yourself on one of their flights - they've just changed the film selection - no more Fargo or Big Lebowski though  )

Also watched What Happened to Monday - Dystopian thriller - 7/10, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - it is what it is - 6/10 and Dunkirk. Beautiful cinematography, minimal dialogue, a thundering soundtrack and some lovely personal perspectives about survival. 9/10

If you are a Christian Bale fan then you may well have seen

The Machinist - harrowing descent into madness. Not his best but if you liked American Psycho ..... 7/10

Saw the Dark Knight a couple of weeks ago (got it for Christmas). Wondered what all the fuss was about Heath Ledgers Joker. Now I know. Why so serious...

Also watched the recent (ish) Planet of the Apes trilogy on the plane last week (Dawn, Rise and War) - surprisingly good.

Saw 'The Party' as well. only just over an hour. More like a one act play. Probably not everyones cup of tea, but really was excellent.

Also saw 'Lost in Florence'. shite. 1/10 for the film, but an extra 5/10 just because its set in the most beautiful city in the world.
