Re: Favourite Movies on the Box
I loved it, it's simplicity is what appealed to me but may well turn people off.
I thought it was great.

Re: Favourite Movies on the Box
For those that still haven't seen it, Under The Skin is on in the early hours tonight, 01:10 on Film4. RECOMMENDED.
Another, slightly different option is Spies Like Us, midnight on 5*
I notice My Name Is Bruce is on later on the Horror Channel at 2:55am. Anyone seen it? Worth a watch?

Re: Favourite Movies on the Box
Tonight (Sunday 17th), BBC Two, 11pm Headhunters - Pretty sure I watched this on the back of someone's tip off on here a while back. In fact I think a few people did, and pretty much everyone thought it was very, very good! It's Norwegian, and you'll be hooked. (7.6 on IMDB)
Remember quite enjoying Splinter (Horror Channel, Monday 18th), though it's been a while. Low budget, but it'll probably keep you entertained. (6.1 on IMDB.....pffft!)

Written by Jo Nesbo. Almost signed for Spurs once I believe. Great author and also had a Norwegian number 1 single too I believe.....

Re: Favourite Movies on the Box
Thanks for the tip off;
Just watched Headhunter. Was ridiculous/farcical at times and I was just starting to think that was all it was, then the plot started to come together.
Very very good.
At the moment I'm thinking 8+/10.

Favourite Movies on the Box
Posted this here on 19/1/15happyhoppy wrote:This one is an excellent film (IMO ) and I would urge you all that have not seen it to see it.
Headhunters Thursday 22nd Jan BBC4 21.00 IMDB 7.6/10 Me 8.5(9)/10 (from memory).
Looked back on the movie thread and I gave it an 8.5 in Oct 2014. Probably more a 9 in these more generous days of ratings where a 10 is possible. Recommended it then too....

Oblivion (Channel 4, Saturday 23rd January, 9pm) - if you can get past the fact that this film borrows heavily from other sci-fi flicks then it's well worth a watch IMO (8/10).

Re: Favourite Movies on the Box
The Great Beauty (Film 4, Tuesday 26th January, 11:25pm) - one for the art house crowd & an incredibly uneven film (some parts are quite tedious whilst others very much live up to it's title) but overall I thought it was a positive viewing experience (7/10).

Goon (Film4, Thursday 28th January, 10:55pm) - there's another chance to what has previously been described as a 'superb sports flavoured comedic drama' (9/10).

Why not celebrate the closure of the transfer window tonight, by watching Troll Hunter* on Film4, 11.25pm.
*not to be confused with the recent BBC Three documentary about internet trolls.
There's also The Fifth Element on 5* at 9pm.

Stake Land
Have to admit that I wasn't expecting this to be anything special but it surprisingly turned out to be a very decent horror flavoured road movie .
The best way I can describe this is as a cross between 'Zombieland' (minus the humour plus vampires instead of zombies) and 'The Road' (but not quite as bleak or depressing)...so if that sounds like your sort of thing then I highly recommend checking it out as I'm pretty damn sure you won't be disappointed ...

moonlightdribbler wrote:Very impressed with Prisoners starring Jake Gyllenhaal & Hugh Jackman (two great performances). Just short of 2 and a half hours long, yet didn't drag at all and I was completely reeled in from start to finish. Powerful stuff!
Prisoners (8.1 on IMDB) - Saturday 6th Feb, 9pm, Channel 4 - If you're not completely gripped by this, you're basically dead.
moonlightdribbler wrote: Dug up this old post (nowt else about Red State on fiso that I could find), as I watched it last night. OOOOF! Thought it may well have been 'a seen it all before, but above average hostage' type movie. I was wrong. Certainly doesn't stick to the usual formulas, and just when you think you know where the film is heading, it kicks you in the balls and goes in the opposite direction. Repeatedly.
It ain't gonna get into anyone's top 50 movies of all time (probably), but it's a cracking watch (if you like being kicked in the balls*).
*metaphorically
Red State (Saturday night, Film 4, 12.35am) - judging by the reviews on IMDb (6.2 btw) and comments on the message board, I'm obviously in the minority on this one, but I still think it's preeettyyyy, preeeettyyyy good!

It was ok, yes a bit different, a bit unexpected... but was all a bit lamely executed and rushed. Was a good premise for a film, but seemed short on ideas - but then went ahead and made it anyway.

The classic Warriors, tonight on Film4, 11pm.
In 1979 a charismatic leader summons the street gangs of New York City in a bid to take it over. When he is killed, The Warriors are falsely blamed and now must fight their way home while every other gang is hunting them down to kill them. (7.7 on imdb)
Everyone's already seen this though, right?
